Summarizing the Experiences of Individuals Who Have Obesity or Larger Bodies Seeking Fertility Care: A Scoping Review.

Females who have larger bodies or obesity may be at an increased risk for experiencing infertility. Problematically, both weight or body size and infertility are stigmatized, harming quality of care. We conducted a scoping review to understand the lived experiences of patients who may be subjected to intersecting stigmas of weight and infertility in healthcare. Searches included six databases (Medline, Embase, CINAHL, PsycInfo, Scopus, and Proquest Theses and Dissertations). Data were narratively summarized. With a team of interest holders, including lived experience experts, we identified fut

From Cell Clusters to Complexity: Testicular Organoids as Emerging Platforms in Male Reproductive Research and Biotechnological Innovation.

Conventional 2D cultures and animal models incompletely recapitulate the human testicular niche, limiting translation for male infertility, toxicology, and endocrine research. Limited and highly variable access to human testicular tissue restricts translational research. Testicular organoids (TOs), self-organizing assemblies of germ and somatic cells within biomimetic scaffolds, microfluidic chips, or bioprinted constructs, can reproduce seminiferous cord/tubule-like organization, elements of the blood-testis barrier and steroidogenic function, and increasingly support germ-cell progression. Maternal fluoride exposure, fertility and birth outcomes: The MIREC cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Fluoride exposure >1.5 mg/L from water has been associated with adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes. Little is known, however, about the effect of fluoride at levels consistent with water fluoridation (i.e., 0.7 mg/L) on pregnancy and birth outcomes. We examined the relationship between maternal fluoride exposure, fertility, and birth outcomes in a Canadian pregnancy cohort living in areas where municipal drinking water fluoride concentrations ranged from 0.04 to 0.87 mg/L. METHODS: Using data from the Maternal-Infant Research on Environmental Chemicals (MIREC) study, we estimated

Experiences and actions taken by women to address delayed conception in Delhi, India: A qualitative study.

One in six people experiences infertility in their lifetime globally, including India. Understanding experiences and actions taken by people with delayed conception requires developing person-centred fertility care interventions. We applied the theory of planned behaviour to explore the experiences and actions of women in couples that failed to conceive in low to lower middle-income neighbourhoods of Delhi, India. This was a qualitative study among 35 women who had failed to conceive after 18 months. Data were collected between February and July 2021 through focus group discussions. Deductive

Connections between primary vaginismus and procreation: some observations from clinical practice.

So far, the literature on vaginismus has mainly been contemplative. Quantitative data are scarce, while fertility and obstetrical aspects are almost never considered. In this article, these two aspects are addressed. A cohort of patients received a questionnaire, developed to obtain information about possible connections between the vaginistic reaction, the patient's treatment goals and, if relevant, obstetrical characteristics. Our data reveal that the desire to have a child is not a negative predictor for treatment outcome in terms of consummation. In some instances, however, self-inseminati

Pregnancy outcome in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is improving: Results from a case control study and literature review.

OBJECTIVES: For women who suffer from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), pregnancy can be a concern, placing the mother and fetus at risk. Our objectives were to assess the risk of adverse pregnancy outcome, disease flares, fertility rate, and co-morbidities in SLE women compared to healthy controls. We also systematically reviewed the literature available on pregnancy outcome in SLE to compare our results to other published data. Our hypothesis was that pregnancy outcome in SLE is improving over time. METHODS: A case-control study comparing self-report of the above-mentioned parameters in S

Women's experiences after a radical vaginal trachelectomy for early stage cervical cancer. A descriptive phenomenological study.

PURPOSE: This paper reports on a phenomenological study of women's experiences 1-10 years following a radical vaginal trachelectomy and describes the impact on health, sexuality, fertility and perceived supportive care needs. METHOD AND SAMPLE: Qualitative telephone interviews employing a descriptive phenomenological approach were conducted using a purposive sample of 12 women. KEY RESULTS: Several felt their cancer experience was positive; bringing them closer to family and changed their outlook on life. A few experienced delayed psychological reactions and/or fears of recurrence. Many expe

Role of Selective Autophagy in Spermatogenesis and Male Fertility.

Autophagy is a "self-eating" process that engulfs cellular contents for their subsequent digestion in lysosomes to engage the metabolic need in response to starvation or environmental insults. According to the contents of degradation, autophagy can be divided into bulk autophagy (non-selective autophagy) and selective autophagy. Bulk autophagy degrades non-specific cytoplasmic materials in response to nutrient starvation while selective autophagy targets specific cargoes, such as damaged organelles, protein aggregates, and intracellular pathogens. Selective autophagy has been documented to rel

[Turner's syndrome and procreation. Ovarian function and Turner's syndrome].

Ovarian failure is a typical feature in Turner's syndrome. The majority of follicles disappears prematurely after a normal determination of the ovary. This results from an accelerated loss of oocytes from the ovaries after the 18th week of fetal life or over a few postnatal years, usually before the onset of puberty. The cause and mechanism of this loss are unknown. X chromosomal anomaly due to deletions or haploinsufficiency of genes can explain the various degrees of ovarian failure. Spontaneous puberty occurs in 20-30% of Turner syndrome patients and their fertility rates vary from 5 to 10%

Bulimia nervosa: an ominous variant of anorexia nervosa.

Thirty patients were selected for a prospective study according to two criteria: (i) an irresistible urge to overeat (bulimia nervosa), followed by self-induced vomiting or purging; (ii) a morbid fear of becoming fat. The majority of the patients had a previous history of true or cryptic anorexia nervosa. Self-induced vomiting and purging are secondary devices used by the patients to counteract the effects of overeating and prevent a gain in weight. These devices are dangerous for they are habit-forming and lead to potassium loss and other physical complications. In common with true anorexia n

The role of mating context and fecundability in women's preferences for men's facial masculinity and beardedness.

The ovulatory shift hypothesis proposes that women's preferences for masculine physical and behavioral traits are greater at the peri-ovulatory period than at other points of the menstrual cycle. However, many previous studies used self-reported menstrual cycle data to estimate fecundability rather than confirming the peri-ovulatory phase hormonally. Here we report two studies and three analyses revisiting the ovulatory shift hypothesis with respect to both facial masculinity and beardedness. In Study 1, a large sample of female participants (N = 2,161) self-reported their cycle phase and prov

Identification of a candidate self-incompatibility locus in beet (Beta vulgaris).

This study provides the first genomic evidence for a candidate self-incompatibility locus in beets (Beta vulgaris), identifying T2/S-RNase candidate genes and a complex S-locus on beet chromosome 2. A comparison of self-incompatible and self-compatible beet taxa reveals structural degeneration linked to mating system shifts. This work establishes a genomics-first framework for investigating self-incompatibility in understudied taxa and offers important implications for crop breeding and the evolution of plant reproductive systems. The majority of flowering plants maintain various mechanisms to

Mating system of Biomphalaria sudanica, a vector of Schistosoma mansoni.

Biomphalaria snails are intermediate hosts for schistosome parasites, which cause morbidity and mortality in humans worldwide. We aimed to determine the mating system of Biomphalaria sudanica, a hermaphroditic vector of schistosomiasis in the African Great Lakes, with the goal of informing the design of genetic studies such as linkage mapping to improve genome assembly and genetic association studies to identify snail resistance genes. To determine the relative rates of outcrossing versus selfing, we assayed the progeny of experimental crosses of snails in the laboratory using a PCR and restri
