Effect on brainstem auditory evoked responses of posterior semicircular canal occlusion in guinea pigs.

The site of origin of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is the posterior semicircular canal and when persistent, the condition is known as cupulolithiasis. Singular neurectomy is the current procedure of choice for the treatment of incapacitating cupulolithiasis. The neurectomy is difficult to learn and carries a significant risk of hearing loss. An alternative procedure, whereby the posterior canal is occluded, is discussed. This was performed on 11 guinea pigs and the effect on hearing was measured using brainstem evoked audiometry. Eight animals showed no hearing loss while the other thr

Opposing effects between retinoic acid and Fibroblast growth factor in patterning the common crus and semicircular canals of the inner ear.

The three orthogonally arranged semicircular canals and their sensory organs, cristae, of the inner ear are responsible for detecting angular head movements. A main functional component of this vestibular apparatus is the evolutionarily conserved unit of the anterior and posterior canals joined by a central stalk, the common crus. A resorption process (removal of epithelial cells) carves out these three connecting structures from an epithelial outpocket of the developing otic vesicle known as the vertical canal pouch. While molecules such as Fibroblast growth factors (FGF) and Bone morphogenet…

Detailed Analysis of the Space between the Semicircular Canals for the Purpose of Direct Bone Conduction Stimulation of the Inner Ear.

INTRODUCTION: Until recently, all locations for bone conduction (BC) stimulator described in the literature were situated outside of the real otic capsule. In recent studies 2 new sites for the BC titanium implant were proposed to directly stimulate the cochlea from the closest possible distance, which was the bone forming the ampulla of the lateral semicircular canal (SC) and the bone between the superior and lateral SC. They proved to be the most efficient in terms of transmission of vibratory energy into the inner ear and could be introduced in the field of BC hearing rehabilitation. To the

A theoretical consideration of the mechanisms underlying auditory symptoms in patients with superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome.

BACKGROUND: We were astonished after reading reports that superior semicircular canal dehiscence can cause auditory hypersensitivity such as hearing sounds of eye movements. The mechanisms underlying auditory hypersensitivity remain incompletely understood. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this hypothesis-generating, theoretical consideration was to propose a new theory regarding the mechanisms responsible for auditory symptoms in patients with superior semicircular canal dehiscence and to explore related aspects of auditory physiology. METHOD: Auditory symptoms were analyzed through 23 published repo

A Questionnaire-Derived Prediction Nomogram for Affected Semicircular Canal and Laterality of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo.

Objective: To investigate whether a detailed historical questionnaire can predict the affected semicircular canal and lateralization in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Methods: In this retrospective study, 459 patients with positional vertigo were evaluated, of whom 236 patients diagnosed with BPPV completed a symptom-based questionnaire. Based on the questionnaire data, logistic regression models were developed to predict lateralization and the affected semicircular canal. The clinical diagnosis of BPPV served as the reference standard. A nomogram was constructed ba

Thinning or dehiscence of bone in structures of the middle cranial fossa floor in superior semicircular canal dehiscence.

BACKGROUND: Superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) is a rare inner ear disorder; currently, it is unknown whether the etiopathology underlying this structural irregularity affects neighboring structures. The goal is to investigate the prevalence of bone thinning in areas of the middle cranial fossa (MCF) floor in SSCD and non-SSCD patients. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 100 patients from March 2011 to June 2017 at a tertiary referral center. 100 patients undergoing 118 SSCD repair surgeries (18 bilateral) were identified. 12 SSCD ears were excluded due to lack of pre-opera

Herniation of the membranous labyrinth into the horizontal semicircular canal is correlated with impaired caloric response in Ménière's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Canal paresis of the horizontal semicircular canal in Ménière's disease is a frequent finding. Endolymphatic hydrops is the single most characteristic morphologic finding in Ménière's disease. However, the relationship between endolymphatic hydrops and canal paresis is still not elucidated. METHODS: We used magnetic resonance imaging to visualize herniation of parts of the vestibular membranous labyrinth into the horizontal semicircular canal and correlated this morphologic feature with the caloric function of the horizontal semicircular canal. RESULTS: Patients who showed hern
