Paroxystic alcohol intoxications are classically defined by the alternation of acute and massive intoxications and abstinence periods but occur mostly in chronically drinking patients. Loss of control, sensation seeking and impulsivity are common features of these disorders that are often associated with multiple drug use. They also seem to be characterized by underlying biological and genetic risk factors and antisocial personality disorder.

Visceral pain is a particularly difficult symptom to manage in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Our aim was to examine whether noninvasive neurostimulation applied to the motor cortex or lumbosacral region can modulate human visceral sensation. Sixteen healthy adult volunteers and 10 patients with IBS were evaluated. Single-pulse lumbosacral magnetic stimulation (LSMS) or transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to assess spinal root and cortical excitability as well as the effect of neurostimulation on anorectal sensation and pain, which were provoked by a local electrica

The one-year supportive group-psychotherapy (3 groups with 8-9 patients) was carried out once-weekly by two therapists in 26 patients who met the DSM-III-R criteria for panic disorder and agoraphobia. Patients filled in various ratings at the beginning and at the end of the therapy and a visual analog scale before as well as after each session. Twelve months after the end of the group-therapy the Longitudinal Interval Follow-up Evaluation (LIFE) was carried out. During the group-psychotherapy panic sensations, anxiety, nervousness and fears as well as psychosocial disability decreased. Duratio

Modulation of pain and nociception by noxious counterstimulation, also called "diffuse noxious inhibitory controls" or DNIC-like effect, is often used in studies of pain disorders. It can be elicited in the trigeminal and spinal innervation areas, but no study has previously compared effects in both innervation areas. Therefore, we performed a study comparing DNIC-like effects on the nociceptive flexion reflex (NFR) and the nociceptive blink reflex as well as the respective pain sensations. In 50 healthy volunteers, the blink reflex elicited with a concentric electrode and the NFR were recorde

Neurotrophic keratopathy (NK) is an uncommon corneal disorder caused by trigeminal nerve dysfunction, leading to loss of ocular surface sensation, impaired corneal epithelial maintenance, and possible progressive stromal lysis. NK is of added potential visual significance in children on account of the risk of amblyopia resulting from stromal opacification. Unlike acquired NK in adult-onset disease, NK in childhood is frequently congenital or inherited, linked to genetic pain insensitivity syndromes, cranial dysinnervation disorders or broader developmental anomalies. Visual function can be wel

Underactive bladder (UAB), which has been described as a symptom complex suggestive of detrusor underactivity, is usually characterized by prolonged urination time with or without a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying, usually with hesitancy, reduced sensation on filling, and slow stream often with storage symptoms. Several causes such as aging, bladder outlet obstruction, diabetes mellitus, neurologic disorders, and nervous injury to the spinal cord, cauda equine, and peripheral pelvic nerve have been assumed to be responsible for the development of UAB. Several contributing factors have

From a neuro-ophthalmologic standpoint, five areas may be affected by psychogenic disease: (1) vision, including visual acuity and visual field; (2) ocular motility and alignment; (3) pupillary size and reactivity; (4) eyelid position and function; and (5) corneal and facial sensation. The physician faced with a patient complaining of decreased vision or some other disturbance related to the afferent or efferent visual systems for which there is no apparent biologic explanation has three responsibilities. First, the physician must ascertain that an organic disorder is not present. Second, the

Burning mouth syndrome (glossalgia) is manifested by oral pin and tingling sensations, numbness and even burning and severe pains, more frequently in the tongue. Unpleasant sensations may involve the anterior two thirds of the tongue or be extended to the front part of the hard palate and the mucous membrane of the lower lip. This condition is characterized by "mirror" and "food dominant" symptoms, disordered salivation, dysgeusia, or psychological disorders. The disease shows a chronic course. Its etiology may be multifactorial. There are no universally accepted diagnostic criteria; the diagn

Forty-three of 101 outpatients with parkinsonism reported that they regularly experienced primary sensory symptoms, i.e., spontaneous abnormal sensations not caused by somatic disease. This is in contrast to similar symptoms reported by only 8 percent of a control population. The most striking and severe symptom was burning of the trunk and proximal extremities, occurring in 11 patients. Twenty-nine patients reported spontaneous pain; a variety of other paresthesialike sensations, e.g., tingling, numbness, and formication, occurred in 32 patients. These subjective sensory phenomena were not as

Focal dystonia (FD) can develop after thalamic lesions. Abnormal somatic sensations were argued to be responsible for FD. Our patient experienced FD-like movement disorders, agraphesthesia, and a reduced sense of shear force on the skin and pressure to deep tissues of the right upper limb following a small infarction in the left posterolateral thalamus. FD-like symptoms improved while the skin was being pulled or the deep tissue was being pushed in a manner proportional to the strength of muscle contractions. Therefore, the lack of these sensations was suggested to be related to FD-like sympto

A 2 1/2 year old child with clinical features of Goldenhar-Gorlin syndrome showed diminished pinprick sensation over the right half of the face. After surgery for the cleft lip, the child died. Neuropathological investigations showed agenesis of the right trigeminal nerve and hypoplasia of the right trigeminal brain-stem nuclei. Nosological aspects of the Goldenhar-Gorlin syndrome and previously reported cases of congenital trigeminal anaesthesia in this disorder are discussed. It is suggested that the hypoplasia of the trigeminal nerve is responsible for the diminished facial sensation seen i

Parkinson's disease (PD) is primarily characterized by motor symptoms, but non-motor issues, including sensory, perceptual, and cognitive impairment, common, significantly impacting daily functioning. Multisensory integration (MSI), the brain's ability to combine sensory information, is crucial for effective navigation and interaction with the world. In PD, disruptions in MSI can lead to various functional difficulties. This systematic review, conducted by PRISMA guidelines, analyses 40 studies with 2070 participants to investigate MSI in PD. The findings indicate significant deficits in MSI,

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) can occur in the absence of any other obvious associated neurologic disorder or in association with a neurodegenerative disease, in which case it is considered as symptomatic RBD. RBD is frequently associated with Parkinson's disease (PD), Lewy body dementia or multiple system atrophy (MSA), and in several cases may even antedate the occurrence of motor symptoms by decades. When no neurologic disorder is obvious, RBD can be considered as idiopathic (iRBD). Several studies have looked at neurophysiologic and neuropsychological functions in

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, after Alzheimer's disease. The cardinal clinical features of PD include asymmetric onset of bradykinesia, rigidity, and resting tremor. Most patients of idiopathic PD present with one or more of the cardinal motor features. Apart from these, various nonmotor symptoms (NMS) also occur in PD and constitute a major clinical challenge, as they are common, but often overshadowed by the dominance of motor symptoms. NMS can present at any stage of the disease including early and pre-motor phase of PD. Several NMS such as o

In this review, we describe crossmodal plasticity following sensory loss in three parts, with each section focusing on one sensory system. We summarize a wide range of studies showing that sensory loss may lead, depending of the affected sensory system, to functional changes in other, primarily not affected senses, which range from heightened to lowered abilities. In the first part, the effects of blindness on mainly audition and touch are described. The latest findings on brain reorganization in blindness are reported, with a particular emphasis on imaging studies illustrating how nonvisual i

Functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome are currently considered to be two separate nosological entities. However, the overlap of symptoms and the evidence of a number of common pathophysiological characteristics suggest that functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome may be different presentations of the same disorder. In this review, we critically appraise points in common, as well as differences, in the epidemiology, pathophysiology and response to treatment of functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome. Population-based studies and large case series show that one- t

BACKGROUND: The motor features of essential tremor (ET) include its hallmark element, kinetic tremor, yet non-motor features are increasingly being recognized as an accompanying part of what was previously viewed as a solely motor disorder. Given the evolving state of the ET field with respect to these non-motor features, the purpose of this manuscript is to critically review the current data.
METHODS: A PubMed search was conducted on July 1, 2015. The term "essential tremor" was crossed in sequential order with 13 additional search terms (e.g., "cognitive", "dementia", "depression"). The tot

BACKGROUND: Human cytomegalovirus is the most common cause of vertically transmitted viral infection, affecting around 1% of liveborns. Infection is symptomatic in nearly 10% of infected children who are at higher risk of development of severe neurological disorders, including cerebral palsy.
AIMS: To study the clinical profile of children with cerebral palsy caused by symptomatic congenital cytomegalovirus infection in a multicenter study involving six countries from the Surveillance of Cerebral Palsy in Europe (SCPE) Network.
METHODS: Data on 35 children (13 males, 22 females; mean age at l
