Anxiety sensitivity and posttraumatic stress symptoms: Associations among female Veterans with a history of military sexual trauma.

Anxiety sensitivity (AS), the degree to which individuals fear bodily sensations associated with anxious arousal, has been implicated in the development and maintenance of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Despite this well-established link, AS has yet to be examined among women who experience military sexual trauma (MST). This is particularly important as research has shown that rates of AS and PTSD are higher among females compared to males. Thus, the purpose of the current investigation was to examine the association between AS and overall PTSD symptom and cluster severity using a sampl…

Daily relationships between posttraumatic stress symptoms, drinking motives, and alcohol consumption in trauma-exposed sexual minority women.

Objective: Sexual minority women (SMW) evidence elevated rates of trauma exposure, posttraumatic stress (PTS), and alcohol consumption. Self-medication models of drinking suggest that individuals may drink to cope with symptoms of PTS, but this possibility remains untested among SMW. Method: The current study used data from drinking days collected via daily diary assessments from 81 trauma-exposed SMW. Participants were mostly White (72.8%) and ranged in age from 18 to 25 (M = 23.8). Participants were followed over 2 14-consecutive-day measurement bursts (720 person-days reported). Analyses we

Military sexual trauma and alcohol misuse among military veterans: The roles of negative and positive emotion dysregulation.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol misuse is a significant clinical concern among military and veteran populations, particularly among individuals who have experienced military sexual trauma (MST). Emotion dysregulation may be an important factor influencing alcohol misuse among individuals with a history of MST. OBJECTIVE: The current study thus examined the role of negative and positive emotion dysregulation in the association between MST type and alcohol misuse among military veterans. METHOD: Data were collected from a community sample of 515 veterans (Mage = 37.48, 71.3% male, 70.5% White). RESULTS…

Emotion Language in Trauma Narratives is Associated with Better Psychological Adjustment among Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse.

Traumatized individuals are often encouraged to confront their experiences by talking or writing about them. However, survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) might find it especially difficult to process abuse experiences, particularly when the abuse is more severe, which could put them at greater risk for mental health problems. The current study examined whether CSA survivors who use emotion language when describing their abuse experiences exhibit better mental health. We analyzed the trauma narratives of 55 adults who, as children, were part of a larger study of the long-term emotional ef

Tools to assess psychological trauma & its correlates in child sexual abuse: A review & current needs in Asia.

Absence of visible physical symptoms and limited capacity to express trauma directly, pose significant challenges in assessment of its exact nature of trauma and its correlates in child sexual abuse. There are numerous assessment tools however, deciding upon the appropriateness is often challenging in Asian socio-cultural and health care set up. A review would provide a ready reference to the practioner regarding the exact clinically utility of the tools and also would guide them in the direction of culture specific modifications. Computerized databases namely Medline, PsycINFO, Health and Psy

Posttraumatic sequelae associated with military sexual trauma in female veterans enrolled in VA outpatient mental health clinics.

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between military sexual assault (MSA) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other symptoms associated with trauma, referred to as disorders of extreme stress not otherwise specified (DESNOS) or complex PTSD within a Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center outpatient mental health treatment-seeking sample. The present results focus on female Veterans only because of the low rates of endorsement of MSA among male Veterans resulting in a sample too small to use in analyses. Compared with those who did not endorse MSA, those who did rep

The role of cumulative sexual trauma and difficulties identifying feelings in understanding female veterans' physical health outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the role of alexithymia (difficulties identifying one's emotions) in understanding the link between PTSD symptoms and negative health outcomes in sexually victimized female veterans. We hypothesized that having experienced multiple types of sexual trauma across the lifespan, experiencing greater severity of PTSD symptoms, and reporting difficulties in identifying emotions would be associated with increased negative health outcomes. METHOD: Anonymous cross-sectional survey of a convenience sample of 456 female veterans enrolled in a VA clinic within the prior year. Data c…

A nurse practitioner-led intervention for runaway adolescents who have been sexually assaulted or sexually exploited: Effects on trauma symptoms, suicidality, and self-injury.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent victims of sexual assault and exploitation suffer significant mental health distress including PTSD, self-harm, suicidal ideation, and attempts. OBJECTIVE: This longitudinal observational study investigated the Runaway Intervention Program's influence on trauma responses at 3, 6, and 12 months for adolescents who have run away at least once and have been sexually assaulted or exploited. PARTICIPANTS: Runaways (n = 362) received nurse practitioner (NP) home and community visits, intensive case management, and optional empowerment groups. SETTING: An urban Midwestern ci

Performing Motherhood After Trauma: A Qualitative Analysis of Non-Offending Mothers in Cases of Transgenerational Child Sexual Abuse.

Transgenerational child sexual abuse (CSA-T) remains one of the most hidden yet persistent forms of interpersonal trauma, reproducing harm across generations and deepening gender-based violence through its disproportionate emotional, symbolic, and social impact on women. This study examines the performative effects of dominant cultural and institutional discourses surrounding motherhood on Chilean women who are non-offending mothers and survivors of CSA, and whose children have also experienced sexual abuse. This study employed a qualitative design grounded in feminist and social constructioni

Sexual orientation differences in trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress symptoms among adults in treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Sexual minority individuals are at increased risk for developing mental health disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Prior research has identified that individuals with comorbid OCD and PTSD may have a more complex clinical presentation and worse treatment outcomes. Although PTSD is not the main focus of exposure with response prevention (ERP), the first-line therapy for OCD, symptoms are inadvertently targeted through overlapping mechanisms with exposure-based PTSD treatments. No prior research has compared sexual minority and heter

Examining Ethnoracial Differences in Retention in Evidence-Based Treatments for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Secondary to Military Sexual Trauma.

Improving and expanding mental health treatment for Veterans who have experienced military sexual trauma (MST) is currently a top priority in Veterans Healthcare Administration. Many of these Veterans develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and there is increasing recognition that diversity is a core treatment consideration for Veterans who have experienced trauma. As such, more information is needed concerning the relationship between trauma-focused treatment attrition and ethnoracial identity in Veterans who have experienced MST. This article presents two studies exploring dropout from…

Does the link between posttraumatic cognitions and eating pathology depend on trauma type? The role of sexual violence.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to potentially traumatic events is well-known to disrupt cognitions about the self. Among trauma-exposed college students, negative cognitions about the self can include low self-worth and heightened perception of behavioral control over outcomes (i.e., self-controllability), including overevaluation of self-control over weight, shape, and eating behaviors. Thus, posttraumatic cognitions may increase risk for eating pathology. These associations may be particularly heightened among those whose trauma was of a sexual nature, given the stigma and inaccurate rape myths that of

From sleep to sip? Examining a daily model of sleep and trauma-related drinking among sexual violence survivors.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol misuse is common among women who have experienced sexual violence and is often attributed to the self-medication model of alcohol use to alleviate posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Despite the proximal theorized role of PTSD symptoms, less attention has been given to daily associations between PTSD symptoms, trauma-related drinking to cope (TRD) motives, and ensuing alcohol use by survivors. Moreover, despite indications that poor sleep impacts affective functioning and may exacerbate daily PTSD symptoms, the role of sleep duration and quality in drinking to cop

Childhood Sexual Trauma, Substance Use, and Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence Among Older Adults Living With HIV: A Mediational Analysis.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is linked to substance use and lower antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence. However, studies examining the mediational role of substance use between CSA and ART adherence are lacking. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the potential mediational role of substance use between CSA and ART adherence among older adults living with HIV (OALH) (n = 91). Mediation analyses assessed the direct and indirect relationships between CSA, substance use, and ART adherence. Statistically significant differences existed in substance use by gender (male vs. female: 12

Associations of caregiver-adolescent conflict and caregiver emotional support with adolescent trauma symptoms and adjustment after sexual abuse.

BACKGROUND: Emotional support from a caregiver is believed to be important for reducing the likelihood of adolescent trauma symptoms and adjustment problems after sexual abuse. Conflict with a caregiver, another relational dynamic, is very common during adolescence, but little is known about how it might operate in tandem with emotional support to influence adolescent trauma symptoms and adjustment after sexual abuse. OBJECTIVE: To better understand how caregiver emotional support and caregiver-adolescent conflict jointly contribute to adolescent trauma symptoms and adjustment after sexual ab

Associations Between Latent Classes of Trauma Exposure and Minority Stressors and Substance Use Among Cisgender Sexual Minority Women.

Psychosocial stressors (e.g., minority stressors, trauma exposure) profoundly impact sexual minority women's (SMW's) risk of alcohol and other drug (AOD) use. However, research has not examined whether there are distinct typologies (i.e., patterns) of psychosocial stressors and whether these vary based on sociodemographic characteristics or are differentially associated with AOD outcomes (e.g., alcohol dependence) among SMW. This study aimed to identify latent classes of SMW reporting distinct typologies of psychosocial stressors and examine predictors and outcomes of latent classes of psychos

The Promise Initiative: Promoting a trauma-informed police response to sexual assault in a mid-size Southern community.

AIMS: A mixed-methods study details a multidisciplinary team's efforts to assess and transform police response to sexual assault in a mid-size community. METHOD: A police department-wide survey (n = 331) determined baseline levels of officer exposure to trauma-informed training, rape myth acceptance, and awareness of community and nationwide sexual assault movements to understand officer attitudes towards factors influencing sexual assault investigations. These data, in conjunction with SAMHSA's (2012) trauma-informed assumptions, were leveraged to develop and adopt trauma-informed policies t

Childhood Interpersonal Trauma and Sexual Satisfaction in Patients Seeing Sex Therapy: Examining Mindfulness and Psychological Distress as Mediators.

Mindful attention and awareness may promote sexual satisfaction. However, experiencing cumulative childhood interpersonal trauma (CCT; sexual abuse, neglect, etc.) is associated with distress, which might interfere with dispositional mindfulness and lead to lower sexual satisfaction. Although the concept of mindfulness emerged as an interesting variable to understand sexual difficulties, little empirical data are available on this topic. This study tested an integrative mediation model of the relation between CCT, psychological distress, dispositional mindfulness, and sexual satisfaction withi
