Association between biological rhythm disturbances and suicidal ideation in mood disorders: A cross-sectional study in China.

Suicidal ideation is a major public health concern in mood disorders. We examined whether disturbances across multiple biological rhythm domains are associated with suicidal ideation during depressive episodes. In a cross-sectional study, 287 adults with major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder were recruited from three hospitals in China (2023-2024). Suicidal ideation was defined using Patient Health Questionnaire-9 item 9; biological rhythms were assessed with the Chinese version of the Biological Rhythms Interview of Assessment in Neuropsychiatry; anxiety was measured with the Generali

The relationship between perceived stress and emotional eating in bus drivers: the effect of shift work.

This study discusses the relationship between perceived stress and emotional eating based on shiftwork in city bus drivers. It was conducted with 1403 male city bus drivers working in Istanbul. Questions about the drivers' physical activity and dietary habits, the Healthy Diet Index (HDI), Emotional Appetite Questionnaire and Perceived Stress Scale-10 data were collected and evaluated in two groups: shift and non-shift employees. It was found that the shift workers (SWs) have lower perceived stress, physical activity, HDI and positive emotional appetite averages. In addition, for SWs, a positi

Sleep characteristics in health workers exposed to the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: The development of sleep disorders, and specifically insomnia, has been linked to the exposure to different stressors. In this line, Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak caused by the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, has caused a huge impact on our environment, and has exposed healthcare workers to an unprecedented threat. In this study, we try to assess sleep quality and the development of sleep disorders in health personnel directly dedicated to the care of COVID-19 patients at the height of the pandemic, compared to the general population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-se

Night work effects on salivary cytokines TNF, IL-1β and IL-6.

Shift work is unavoidable in modern societies, but at the same time disrupts biological rhythms and contributes to social distress and disturbance of sleep, health and well-being of shift workers. Shift work has been associated with some chronic diseases in which a chronic inflammatory condition may play a role. However, few studies investigating the association of cytokine and other inflammation markers with shift workers have been published in recent years. In this study we evaluated the effects of permanent night work on the production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF), interleukin-1β (IL-1β),

Association between shift work patterns and the incidence of prediabetes and diabetes among night shift workers: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Prediabetes and diabetes represent major public health challenges, and shift work has been identified as a significant occupational risk factor. While two-shift systems are gaining preference over conventional three-shift systems, evidence comparing their risks for diabetes and prediabetes remains limited. We aimed to evaluate the risk of developing prediabetes and diabetes according to shift work patterns among night shift workers. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed 14,879 night shift workers at a tertiary hospital in Korea (2016-2022). Participants were classified

Endothelial Dysfunction and Hemostatic System Activation in Relation to Shift Workers, Social Jetlag, and Chronotype in Female Nurses.

Circadian misalignment, due to shiftwork and/or individual chronotype and/or social jetlag (SJL), quantified as the difference between internal and social timing, may contribute to cardiovascular disease. Markers of endothelial dysfunction and activation of the coagulation system may predict cardiovascular pathology. The present study aim was to investigate the effects of shift work, SJL, and chronotype on endothelial function and coagulation parameters. One hundred female nurses underwent endothelial function testing using the EndoPAT and blood sampling for coagulation markers, repeated at 06

Cardiovascular alterations and night shift work disorder in nurses: a systematic review.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are among the top causes of morbidity and mortality among Mexican adults. Night shift work disorder (NSWD) has been reported as a possible risk factor for CVD. The objective of this review was to determine whether there is an association between CVD and NSWD in nurses. We performed a systematic review of these variables in PubMed. Of 68 original research articles addressing CVD and NSWD in nurses, four found an association between CVD and NSWD. A possible association between these variables was documented, supported by the alteration of wake/sleep circadian cycles

Impact of nursing shift patterns on work-related musculoskeletal disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are among the leading causes of disability worldwide and substantially affect the nursing workforce due to high physical demands, biomechanical strain, and irregular work schedules. Growing evidence suggests that shift work, particularly rotating and night schedules, may contribute to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs); however, findings remain inconsistent across studies. This study aimed to examine, through a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies, the association between distinct nursing shift patterns (day, rotating, and f

Effects of health care provider work hours and sleep deprivation on safety and performance.

BACKGROUND: There has been increasing interest in the impact of resident-physician and nurse work hours on patient safety. The evidence demonstrates that work schedules have a profound effect on providers' sleep and performance, as well as on their safety and that of their patients. Nurses working shifts greater than 12.5 hours are at significantly increased risk of experiencing decreased vigilance on the job, suffering an occupational injury, or making a medical error. Physicians-in-training working traditional > 24-hour on-call shifts are at greatly increased risk of experiencing an occupati

Bright light treatment used for adaptation to night work and re-adaptation back to day life. A field study at an oil platform in the North Sea.

Night workers complain of sleepiness, reduced performance and disturbed sleep due to lack of adjustment of the circadian rhythm. In simulated night-work experiments scheduled exposure to bright light has been shown to reduce these complaints. Here we studied the effects of bright light treatment on the adaptation to 14 days of consecutive night work at an oil platform in the North Sea, and the subsequent readaptation to day life at home, using the Karolinska sleep/wake diary. Bright light treatment of 30 min per exposure was applied during the first 4 nights of the night-shift period and the f

Oxidative Stress and Semen Quality Among Night- and Day-Shift Workers: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction: Infertility affects 15% of couples, with oxidative stress recognized as a key contributor to male infertility. Night-shift work, through circadian disruption, may exacerbate oxidative imbalance and impair reproductive function. This study investigates the impact of night-shift work on oxidative stress and semen quality and evaluates the potential benefits of antioxidant supplementation in this context. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analysed 96 white-European men aged 18-45, seeking fertility assessment at a single academic centre. Participants were classified as day o

Narrative review of mathematical and psychological studies of staff scheduling for holidays as applicable to anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists.

We performed a narrative review of articles applicable to anesthesiologists' and nurse anesthetists' choices of who works each statutory holiday for operating room and non-operating room anesthesia. We include search protocols and detailed supplementary annotated comments. Studies showed that holiday staff scheduling is emotional. Working on holidays often is more stressful and undesirable than comparable workdays. Intrinsic motivation may overall, among practitioners, be greater by preferentially scheduling practitioners who choose to work on holidays, for compensation, before mandating that

An on-road study of sleepiness in split shifts among city bus drivers.

Bus drivers often work irregular hours or split shifts and their work involves high levels of stress. These factors can lead to severe sleepiness and dangerous driving. This study examined how split shift working affects sleepiness and performance during afternoon driving. An experiment was conducted on a real road with a specially equipped regular bus driven by professional bus drivers. The study had a within-subject design and involved 18 professional bus drivers (9 males and 9 females) who drove on two afternoons; one on a day in which they had driven early in the morning (split shift situa

Chronotype and its association with eating behaviour and psychosocial well-being in shift workers: A systematic review.

Shift work is increasingly common in modern societies but is strongly associated with misalignments of natural circadian rhythms, which may negatively impact dietary behaviour and psychosocial well-being. Chronotype, an individual's natural sleep-wake preference, influences adaptation to shift work and its associated lifestyle challenges. This systematic review aimed to examine the relationship between chronotype on both eating behaviour and psychosocial well-being among shift workers. A systematic search was conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Literature searches were perform
