[Purpose] To investigate the effect of heel height on the distribution of plantar foot force and heel pain in patients with a heel spur. [Subjects and Methods] Plantar force was measured using 8 force sensors in 16 patients (3 men, 13 women), with symptomatic heel spur for 4 heel heights (0-4 cm). Sensors were located at the hallux (T1); medial to lateral metatarsals (M1 through M3), mid-foot (MF); and at the central, lateral, and medial heel (CH, LH, and MH). Pain was evaluated using the minimum compression force that caused pain and was measured using an algometer. [Results] Load bearing shi

This study examined how shoe midsole hardness influenced plantar pressure in basketball-related movements. Twenty male university basketball players wore customized shoes with hard and soft midsoles (60 and 50 Shore C) to perform four movements: running, maximal forward sprinting, maximal 45° cutting and lay-up. Plantar loading was recorded using an in-shoe pressure measuring system, with peak pressure (PP) and pressure time integral (PTI) extracted from 10 plantar regions. Compared with hard shoes, subjects exhibited lower PP in one or more plantar regions when wearing the soft shoes across a…

Preservation of the primary dentition until the normal time of exfoliation is one of the most important factor involved in preventive and interceptive dentistry. The premature loss of second primary molar before the eruption of permanent first molar can create a significant arch space/tooth size discrepancy. Distal shoe space maintainer is a valuable part of the Paediatric Dentist's armamentarium in those cases where the second primary molar is prematurely lost and it helps to guide the first permanent molar into place. Conventional design poses various limitations in cases of premature loss o

People who have extremely high arched feet may be subject to substantial levels of foot pain, despite the lack of obvious pathology. This study sought to investigate the effect of pes cavus on pain intensity and location and on the magnitude and distribution of foot pressure. Measurements were derived from the more symptomatic foot of 130 participants with painful, idiopathic pes cavus. Data were collected using Pedar in-shoe pressure sensors and averaged over nine randomly selected steps. Participant information, including location and intensity of pain, Foot Posture Index values and anthropo

PURPOSE: The purposes of this project were to assess the effect of four different shoe inserts on the path of the center of pressure (COP), to quantify the effect of these inserts on selected knee joint moments during running, and to assess the potential of COP data to predict the effects of inserts/orthotics on knee joint moments.
METHODS: Kinematics for the lower extremities, resultant ankle and knee joint moments, and the path of the COP were collected from the right foot of 15 male subjects while running heel-toe with five different shoe inserts (full or half with 4.5-mm postings).

BACKGROUND: Heel movement is critical to shock absorption and vascular perfusion of the equine digit. Conventional horseshoeing techniques are suspected to restrict natural hoof deformation, affecting hoof biomechanics. Several studies have explored the effects of shoeing on hoof function, though many have been limited to artificial conditions, cadavers, or homogenous populations.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare the effects of two aluminium shoeing techniques, nail-on versus indirect glue-on fabric cuff shoes, on heel movement in horses. Our objective was to determine which technique allowed g…

Carbon plate running shoes (CPRS) have significantly advanced running shoe technology, but their orthopaedic impact remains controversial. Remarkably, most running-related overuse injuries affect one leg only, although running is generally considered a symmetrical physical activity. Therefore, this study examined whether CPRS affect biomechanical loading and between-leg symmetry. Twenty-two trained amateur triathletes (13 men and 9 women) participated in a two-day trial. On day 1, ventilatory thresholds (VT1 and VT2) were determined through incremental treadmill testing. On day 2, participants…

Different shapes of carbon-fiber plates (CFPs) are likely to affect lower limb biomechanics, particularly under conditions of running-induced fatigue, and potentially impact runners' performance and risk of injury. However, no studies have yet elucidated the precise effects of CFP shapes on the lower limb biomechanical characteristics subsequent to running-induced fatigue. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different CFP shapes in running shoes on the lower limb biomechanics of runners following running-induced fatigue. 12 male runners (aged 21.8 ± 1.3 years, mass 59.1…

BACKGROUND: Specific attention on the musculoskeletal impact of wearing high-heeled shoes (HHS) has mainly focused on knee osteoarthritis and the literature is limited to biomechanical changes. The distal femoral cartilage has not been morphologically studied. Additionally, although heel elevation is coupled with a shear stress at the heel and overloaded calf muscles, Achilles tendon (AT) and plantar fascia (PF) thicknesses have not been assessed either.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the distal femoral cartilage, AT, and PF were different in women wearing HHS and flat-heeled shoes (FHS) a…

BACKGROUND: Hallux valgus (HV) is one common deformity of the human foot. Metatarsal pain, gait deviation and foot function disorder may occur when HV is severe.
RESEARCH QUESTION: It was hypothesized that a 12-week minimalist shoes running intervention among mild and moderate hallux valgus males may alter foot morphology and plantar pressure distribution during walking and running.
METHODS: The foot morphology and plantar pressure data, in this study, were collected from eleven participants using the Easy-Foot-Scan (EFS) and Novel EMED force plate.
RESULTS: Compared to pre-intervention ses…

Shoes with rocker bottom soles are utilized by persons with diabetic peripheral neuropathy to reduce plantar pressures during gait. The risk of falls increases with age and is compounded by diabetic neuropathy. The purpose of this study was to analyze how rocker bottom shoes affect posture control of older adults (50-75 years old) and younger adults (20-35 years old) in response to posterior slide perturbations. The postural response to a posterior platform translation was normalized among subjects by applying the below threshold stepping velocity (BTSV) for each subject. The BTSV was the fast…

Using a prospective, randomized experimental design, 622 college intramural basketball players were stratified by a previous history of ankle sprains to wear a new pair of either high-top, high-top with inflatable air chambers, or low-top basketball shoes during all games for a complete season. Subjects were asked to complete a history questionnaire and were given a complete ankle examination. They were allowed to wear these shoes only during basketball competition. Followed over the course of a 2-month intramural season, 15 ankle injuries occurred during 39,302 minutes of player-time: 7 in hi…

BACKGROUND: Premature loss of the second primary molars can result in arch space loss and later malocclusion. Distal shoe space maintainers (SMs) are used to guide the eruption of the permanent first molars, although their clinical effectiveness remains under-evaluated.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the clinical effectiveness and complication profile of distal shoe SMs in paediatric patients following premature loss of second primary molars.
METHODS: A PRISMA-compliant systematic review was conducted, with protocol registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251101518). Searches in PubMed, Scopus, Web of

We aimed to assess the success rate and facilitators of and the barriers to the implementation of in-shoe plantar pressure measurements in footwear practice for people with diabetes at high risk of foot ulceration. Eleven Dutch footwear practices were partly supported in purchasing a pressure measurement system. Over a 2.5-year period, trained shoe technicians evaluated 1030 people with diabetes (range: 13 to 156 across practices). The implementation success and associated facilitators and barriers were evaluated quantitatively using completed measurement forms and pressure measurement data ob

BACKGROUND: The choice of an appropriate type of orthosis depends on the patient's specific condition and needs. Different types of orthoses can affect plantar pressure distribution during certain gait patterns. Toe and heel gaits are common patterns of gait assigned for optimal recovery in patients with foot or ankle injuries. This study aimed to evaluate differences in plantar pressure between postoperative shoes and walker boots during toe and heel gaits in healthy individuals.
METHODS: A total of 30 healthy individuals with a mean age of 21.7 ± 1.2 years were included in this study. Two t…
