Shoulder Function Reconstruction in Brachial Plexus Birth Injury: Anterior Shoulder Release and Spinal Accessory to Suprascapular Nerve Transfer.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the efficacy of the spinal accessory to suprascapular nerve transfer accompanied by anterior shoulder release in restoring shoulder external rotation and abduction in patients with brachial plexus birth injury. METHODS: A cohort of 41 children with brachial plexus birth injury and shoulder internal rotation contractures underwent surgical intervention. The procedure involved an anterior shoulder release encompassing subscapularis tenotomy, capsulotomy and division of the coracohumeral ligament, and transfer of the spinal accessory nerve to the suprascapular nerve

Nationwide trends in inpatient shoulder girdle injuries in Germany: a population-based analysis from 2010 to 2023.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder girdle injuries are common musculoskeletal conditions that frequently require medical attention and may result in substantial functional impairment and healthcare utilisation. While many cases are managed on an outpatient basis, a relevant proportion requires inpatient care. Comprehensive nationwide analyses of inpatient shoulder girdle injuries over extended time periods remain limited, particularly with regard to recent healthcare disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This nationwide, population-based, retrospective study analysed aggregated inpatient hosp

Physical examination tests in the acute phase of shoulder injuries with negative radiographs: a diagnostic accuracy study.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff tears may easily be missed in patients with acute shoulder trauma. The evidence in support of shoulder physical examination tests has been considered insufficient in reviews and meta-analyses. The purpose of this study was to explore whether physical examination tests can effectively predict or rule out acute full-thickness rotator cuff tears in soft tissue shoulder injuries in emergency departments and primary health care. METHODS: In a combined primary care walk-in clinic and secondary care orthopaedic emergency department, 120 consecutive patients aged ≥ 40 years w…

Comparison of core neuromuscular control and lower extremity postural stability in athletes with and without shoulder injuries.

BACKGROUND: The kinetic chain theory is widely used as a rationale for the inclusion of core stability training in athletes. Core stability (muscle capacity and neuromuscular control) impairments may result in less than optimal performance and abnormal force dissipation to the shoulder complex that could lead to shoulder injuries. However, a paucity of literature exists to support this relationship, and no previous studies have investigated the relationship between isolated core neuromuscular control and shoulder injuries. Additionally, lower extremity postural stability has been associated wi…

Prospective multifactorial analysis of preseason risk factors for shoulder and elbow injuries in high school baseball pitchers.

PURPOSE: To prospectively identify preseason physical factors for shoulder and elbow injuries during the season in high school baseball pitchers. METHODS: The study included 105 high school baseball pitchers [median age 16 (15-17) years]. The range of motion of the shoulder (90° abducted external and internal rotation) and elbow (extension/flexion), shoulder muscle strength (abduction and prone internal and external rotation), shoulder and elbow laxity, horizontal flexion, and scapular dyskinesis were assessed. After the season, the participants completed questionnaires regarding shoulder and

Neck range of motion prognostic factors in association with shoulder and elbow injuries in professional baseball pitchers.

BACKGROUND: The authors observed an association between cervical spine mobility and arm injury risk in baseball players; however, there is a need to assess the generalizability of cervical measurement data. Assessing the downstream associations of cervical dysfunction on shoulder and elbow injuries can inform clinical interventions to help reduce future arm injuries. The purpose of this study was to assess the generalizability of neck range of motion measures as arm injury prognostic factors in professional baseball pitchers. METHODS: A prospective cohort of professional baseball pitchers in

Traumatic brain injuries are ignored or discriminated in prospective clinical trials on shoulder fractures: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Current literature suggests a significant epidemiological association between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and proximal upper limb fractures in addition to major clinical consequences. A systematic review was conducted to assess how TBI is taken into consideration in interventional studies on shoulder fractures. METHODS: The following data sources were used: MEDLINE, EMBASE, EBM Reviews, CINAHL, and OpenGrey databases. Study selection included interventional randomized clinical trials and prospective cohort studies on shoulder fractures published in English or French between 2008 and

Risk Factors of Shoulder and Elbow Injuries in Baseball: A Scoping Review of 3 Types of Evidence.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder and elbow overuse injuries are the most common problems in baseball players. No scoping review has compared the finding … ited shoulder range of motion (ROM) and player positions (pitchers or catchers) as risk factors for shoulder injuries. For elbow injuries, the majority of the included studies suggested that being pitchers or catchers and working with higher ball velocity can be risk factors. CONCLUSION: Findings were consistent in some risk factors, such as limited shoulder ROM a …

[Transposition of scapular muscles in the treatment of injuries of the rotator cuff of the shoulder (RCS)].

An experience of 13 cases of short rotator muscles advancement is reported. These procedures were found to be available in treatment of rotator cuff avulsions with retraction, when anatomical reinsertion or shoe-lace suture after Mclaughlin appeared to be impossible. The authors had performed advancement of the supraspinatus alone in 10 cases and simultaneous advancement of supra-, infraspinatus and teres minor in 3 cases. Only one poor result was obtained that can't but confirm a most high efficacy of the procedures described.
