OBJECTIVES: To report one case of colovesical fistula after the diagnosis of unresponsive urinary tract infection.
METHODS: The 76-year-old patient underwent a diagnostic work up including cystography, cystoscopy and barium enema.
RESULTS: Cystography revealed an image of the sigmoid colon, and cystoscopy showed a granuloma at the bladder dome. A fistula was identified underneath. A colovesical fistula was diagnosed and several intestinal germs grew on urine cultures. Partial cystectomy and end to end anastomosis of the sigmoid colon were carried out. Pathology report showed a well-different

We report a case of a 35 year-old woman with a large malignant sessile tubulo-villous polyp of the proximal end of a dolico-sigmoid colon causing intussusception and transanal prolapsing. The diagnosis presented some difficulties being the intussusception intermittent. The clinical feature had been initially misdiagnosed for a very large bleeding polyp (5 cm in size), protruding out of the anus with a long pedicle in the rectum. The histology of multiple bioptic samples of the lesion revealed malignancy. Conventional radiologic studies (plain x-rays, barium enema) after metal clips had been pl

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The objective was to determine the preferences and perspectives regarding preoperative evaluation and treatment strategies for rectosigmoid junction cancer among radiation oncologists using a questionnaire survey.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Since defining the correct origin of the neoplasm is essential in tailoring the most appropriate treatment scheme in the rectosigmoid junction region, we surveyed Turkish radiation oncologists about clinical decisions in rectosigmoid junction cancer patients via a 20-point questionnaire.
RESULTS: Based on responses from 130 radiation oncologi

BACKGROUND: The role of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in advanced sigmoid colon carcinoma remains to be further characterized. Rationale for NAC includes downstaging on final pathology and optimization of microscopically negative margins (R0 resection). We investigated rates of neoadjuvant chemotherapy use in advanced sigmoid colon cancer at academic cancer centers and assessed factors associated with likelihood of NAC administration.
METHODS: The National Cancer Database was queried from 2004 to 2017 for patients with clinical T3 or T4, N0-2, M0 sigmoid colon cancer who underwent surgical r

Background: With the development of surgical technology, surgeons are paying more and more attention to minimally invasive procedures such as injury reduction, pain reduction, and beautiful incisions to ensure the effectiveness of surgical treatment. This article discusses the safety, feasibility, and clinical outcomes of laparoscopic resection of sigmoid colon and rectal tumors via natural orifice specimen extraction surgery (NOSES). Materials and Methods: The clinical data of 39 patients who underwent complete laparoscopic resection of sigmoid colon tumor or rectal tumor at Chengde Medical C

The objective of this study was to determine whether there is a correlation between the length of the sigmoid colon removed and the number of harvested lymph nodes (LNs). Pathology charts of 137 sigmoid resections that were done over a 5-year period were reviewed. The length of removed sigmoid specimen reported in the pathology reports was correlated with the number of LNs retrieved from the specimen. The mean and median numbers of retrieved LNs were 9 and 10, respectively. There was an increase in the number of retrieved LNs with increasing length of resected sigmoid colon. For Dukes' B patie

The etiology for development of colon carcinoma associated with ureterosigmoidostomy seems to be related to the urine. The incidence of colon carcinoma associated with ureterosigmoidostomy is 500 times greater than in the normal population, indicating about a 5% life time risk. The development time of these lesions varies from 6 to 50 years postoperatively but it is significantly less in patients more than 40 years old. The possibility exists that colon carcinoma may develop in primary sigmoid urinary diversion conduits or sigmoid internal conduits to either bladder or bowel. No reported bowel

In 1964 the Veterans Administration Surgical Adjuvant Group (VASAG) initiated a large-scale, controlled, randomized protocol to study the role of low-dose preoperative irradiation (2000-2500 rads/10fractions/12 days) in patients with operable adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon and rectum. This report analyzes the data in 700 patients, all at 5-year risk. There appears to be a definate benefit to irradiated patients who undergo abdominoperineal resections, when compared with the controls. This advantage is reflected in improvement of 5-year survival, and reduction in lymph node invasion, local

We report a case of a patient with sigmoid colon cancer and multiple liver metastases who underwent hepatectomy after chemotherapy and pathological results showed complete remission. However, after chemotherapy was discontinued, the patient developed a local recurrence of the liver metastasis and underwent rehepatectomy. The patient came to our hospital with lower abdominal pain. Colonoscopy revealed a circumferential type Ⅱ, well-differentiated adenocarcinoma. Laparoscopic sigmoidectomy with lymph node dissection was performed. Postoperative CT scan showed multiple liver metastases at S5, S7,

A 64-year-old man was diagnosed with KRAS-mutant type sigmoid colon cancer with metastasis in the lung, liver, left adrenal gland, and para-aortic lymph node(T3N1M1b, Stage ⅣB[Union for International Cancer Control 8th edition]). Laparoscopic transverse colostomy was performed to treat colonic obstruction. Subsequently, a combination regimen of capecitabine plus oxaliplatin plus bevacizumab was administered. After 5 courses of chemotherapy, the S8 liver tumor disappeared completely. Sigmoidectomy, para-aortic lymph node dissection, and left adrenal gland resection were performed. After 3 month

The induction of tumours at the site of uretero-intestinal anastomosis was investigated in Hannover: WISTAR rats. The rats were divided into 3 groups. In one group (n = 70) the ureter of the left kidney was implanted into the colon, using microsurgical techniques developed for humans. In 13% of the rats in this group benign tumours developed; in 16% malignant tumours occurred. In a second group (n = 76) the ureter was implanted into a rectal bladder; the faeces were excluded from the anastomosis by a descending colon anus praeter. In this group benign tumours developed in 17% and malignant tum

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of indocyanine green fluorescence angiography in assessment of colorectal anastomosis perfusion.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective single-center non-randomized comparative study included 85 patients with rectum and sigmoid colon cancer between September 2019 and March 2023. In the main group (n=41), we intraoperatively injected indocyanine green (ICG) IV to assess perfusion in the near infrared spectrum. In the control group (n=44), the same interventions were performed without ICG.
RESULTS: In the main group, anterior resection of the rectum was pe
