Forty-eight isolates of Listeria monocytogenes from sheep and silage, involved in five small outbreaks of listeriosis, were compared by pyrolysis mass spectrometry (PyMS). The method clustered isolates from single animals, and showed that epidemiologically associated isolates were closely related to each other. PyMS is a simple technique capable of analysing large numbers of samples daily, and its application in veterinary studies should help to elucidate the epidemiology of listeriosis.

Some days after vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease a high degree of salivation, trembling of the muscles, colic, hyperemization of the mucosa of the mouth, extreme thirst, and losing of hairs at the end of the tail occurred in cattle. The cause of these symptoms seems not to be the vaccination, but the content of thallium in silage (41 mg/kg) fresh matter, which was bought from abroad. The diagnosis was confirmed by analysis of thallium in several organs (liver, kidney, muscles).

One of the diagnostic possibilities to consider when a patient presents with cough, fever, dyspnea, or pulmonary infiltrates is hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Some of the problems encountered in diagnosis of diffuse lung disease are illustrated in two case reports. In one of the cases, interstitial pneumonitis of insidious onset was attributed to inhalation of thermophilic organisms in moldy silage. In the other, the outstanding pathologic feature was bronchiolitis obliterans, and circumstantial evidence pointed to a home humidifier as the source of the problem.

Listeria monocytogenes is a significant food-borne human and veterinary pathogen. Contaminated silage commonly leads to disease in livestock, but the pervasive nature of the bacterium can make it difficult to identify the source of infection. Rhythm components (no of cycles/24 h) were characterized by the finite Fourier transform of hourly means of the 24 h mastication activities. Of several media tested for their ability to induce asexual reproduction in confirmed or suspected isolates of Mortierella wolfii obtained from cattle in various geographical locations, only silage extract agar worked consistently and rapidly. Its use should provide a simple reliable culturing procedure to assist with identification of clinical isolates of this fungus. Temperature growth response curves and electrophoretic patterns of soluble protein extracts of these isolates with characteristic morphological features of M. wolfii indicate substantial variation amongst them.
