In the atrophic posterior maxilla, successful implant placement is often complicated by the lack of quality and volume of available bone. In these cases, sinus floor augmentation is recommended to gain sufficient bone around the implants. Sinus elevation can be performed by either an open lateral window approach or by a closed osteotome approach depending on available bone height. This case series demonstrates the feasibility and safety of minimally invasive antral membrane balloon elevation, followed by bone augmentation and implant fixation in 20 patients with a residual bone height of 2 to …

Maxillary sinus floor elevation is usually performed in two different ways: the lateral approach involves the creation of a bony window on the maxillary sinus lateral wall, providing direct access to the sinus cavity for membrane elevation and subsequent graft placement, and the transcrestal approach is considered less invasive. The aim of this article is to describe, based on the literature, how to anticipate, avoid, and manage the intraoperative complications that can occur with both approaches. For both approaches, the most common complication is the sinus membrane perforation. For the late

PURPOSE: Maxillary sinus floor augmentation is a treatment that has been proposed for patients in whom the alveolar bone height is insufficient. This procedure is commonly used in patients aged 40 to 70 years and older. However, little information exists whether the factor of age might influence the outcome of augmentation procedures. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the patient's age has an effect on bone formation and incorporation in maxillary sinus floor augmentation procedures.

In order to place implants subantrally when there is a reduced amount of bone, some form of bone augmentation is required. A transcrestal sinus floor elevation using osteotomes can increase bone levels and is a highly successful procedure. However, malleting osteotomes can be disconcerting for a patient. Therefore, a simplified technique is presented that minimizes the use of a mallet when executing a sinus floor elevation in medium dense bone. In addition, issues related to performing a transcrestal sinus floor elevation are addressed.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to histomorphometrically test the hypothesis that graft consolidation originates from the sinus floor.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective, randomized split-mouth study investigated patients undergoing bilateral maxillary lateral sinus floor augmentation using either freeze-dried bone allografts (FDBAs) or biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) bone substitute. Apico-coronal core biopsies were harvested during implant placement 9 months after sinus floor augmentation, processed for histological observation, and measured histomorphometrically.
RESULTS: Biops…

For a large benign lesion within the maxillary sinus, such as an antral pseudocyst, maxillary sinus floor augmentation is more commonly performed using a two-stage approach. This involves first removing the lesion, and then, re-entry following several months of healing. In this case series, we described the "one-bony-window" approach, which is a technical surgical modification of the previous one-stage approach, for simultaneous cyst removal and maxillary sinus floor augmentation. Four patients with large maxillary antral pseudocysts were included. The "one-bony-window" approach involves the p…

Insufficient crestal bone is a common feature encountered in the edentulous posterior maxilla due to atrophy of the alveolar ridge and maxil … perience and skills of the surgeon. The role of sinus anatomy in healing and graft remodeling after sinus floor augmentation is crucial. In addition to the evaluation of residual bone height, the clinician should consider that histologic and clinical outcomes are also influenced by the buccal-palatal bone wall distance. Therefore, three main clinical scenarios may be iden …

A minimum subantral bone height in the posterior maxilla may require a bone augmentation where a sinus lift procedure is the most commonly used technique, either preceding or simultaneously with the implant installation. While elevating the Schneiderian membrane ruptures are common, possibly resulting in less bone formation. In this paper, we propose the surgical pneumatization of the Schneiderian membrane as a new technique to minimize the risk of such complications. This can be achieved mainly by creating a hole for the immediate and increased passage of air through the Schneiderian membrane

Maxillary sinus augmentation has been shown to be a predictable treatment option for placing dental implants in areas of posterior maxilla with lack of sufficient residual alveolar bone height.1 The transalveolar (crestal) and the lateral window are the main techniques for the maxillary sinus augmentation with the goal of creating a space beneath the Schneiderian membrane in which to place various grafting materials in order to increase alveolar bone height.

The present report describes a minimally invasive technique for transcrestal sinus floor elevation, namely the Smart Lift technique, which is based on the controlled use of drills and osteotomes. The rationale of this technique is to provide predictable vertical bone augmentation into the sinus cavity by (1) using the existing residual bone as a viable graft and (2) limiting the incidence of membrane perforation and postsurgery morbidity. Surgical steps of the procedure are thoroughly illustrated by means of a paradigmatic case. The Smart Lift procedure was compatible with sinus floor elevatio
