Differences in attentional bias to smoking-related, affective, and sensation-seeking cues between smokers and non-smokers: an eye-tracking study.

RATIONALE: One of the behavioural features of tobacco use disorder is the presence of attentional bias (AB) to smoking-related stimuli. However, much of the research investigating these associations have been limited to the use of reaction-based indices. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate differences in AB to smoking, affective, and sensation-seeking cues in smokers and non-smokers using novel, free-viewing, eye-tracking technology. Secondary aims included investigating impulsivity-by-group interaction effects on AB to sensation-seeking cues. METHODS: Participants were either otherwise-heal

An evaluation of cytisinicline for smoking cessation in adult smokers.

INTRODUCTION: Cigarette smoking is the world's leading preventable cause of death. With no new smoking cessation pharmacotherapy approved since 2006, the 29 million US adults who smoke need new treatment options. Cytisinicline, a partial agonist at α4β2 neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, is the name of a new dosing regimen of cytisine, a smoking cessation pharmacotherapy that has been sold for decades in Eastern Europe but is currently unavailable in the US. The Food and Drug Administration is evaluating a New Drug Application for cytisinicline. AREAS COVERED: We summarize the histor

Ultrasonographic evaluation of the parotid and submandibular glands in smokers.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the ultrasonographic features of the parotid and submandibular salivary glands in individuals with long-term cigarette use and to investigate the effects of smoking on these glands. METHODS: A total of 120 participants were included in the study: 55 individuals who had been actively smoking for at least 5 years and 65 healthy controls who had never smoked. The echogenicity, parenchymal architecture, glandular margins, and vascular patterns of the parotid and submandibular glands were assessed using ultrasonography. In addition, the volume of each gland

The changes of intrinsic connectivity contrast in young smokers.

Previous studies demonstrated that reward circuit plays an important role in smoking. The differences of functional and structural connectivity were found among several brain regions such as thalamus and frontal lobe. However, few studies focused on functional connectivity (FC) in whole-brain voxel level of young smokers. In this study, intrinsic connectivity contrast (ICC) was used to perform voxel-based whole-brain analyses in 55 young smokers and 55 matched non-smokers to identify brain regions with significant group differences. ICC results showed that the connectivity of young smokers in

Development and Validation of the Smoker Self-Stigma Questionnaire.

INTRODUCTION: Researchers have become increasingly concerned with the stigmatizing impact that regulations and policies aimed to curve down cigarette smoking may have on smokers. Given the lack of psychometrically validated tools available to assess smoking stigma, we developed and evaluated the Smoker Self-Stigma Questionnaire (SSSQ). AIMS AND METHODS: A total of 592 smokers recruited through Amazon's Mechanical Turk (MTurk) completed an online, Qualtrics survey that included 45 items developed and vetted by tobacco-research experts. The items were assigned a priori to three, theoretical sti

Advice for smokers in smoking cessation clinic: a review.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco dependence has become a global public health concern. We chose to investigate the modifiable factors and motivations during the period of smoking cessation based on the mechanism of nicotine addiction. METHODS: We selected emotion, sleep, alcohol, caffeine beverages, mental activities after dinner, exercise and CYP2A6 genotype as influencing factors, and provided corresponding recommendations for smokers based on these factors. Based on these characteristics, we reviewed literature and summarized the relationship between these factors and nicotine dependence or smoking. R

[Systemic inflammatory profile of smokers with and without COPD].

INTRODUCTION: Studies comparing the systemic inflammatory profiles of smokers with and without COPD present discordant findings. AIM: To compare the systemic inflammatory profile of smokers with and without COPD. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional comparative study. Two groups of active smokers of more than 10 pack-years were included: 56 consecutives stable COPD (postbronchodilator FEV1/FVC<0.70) and 32 consecutives non-COPD (postbronchodilator FEV1/FVC≥0.70). Smoking and clinical, anthropometric and spirometric data were noted. The following blood biomarkers were identified: leukocytes, he

Strategies to help a smoker who is struggling to quit.

Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death worldwide. Stopping tobacco use benefits virtually every smoker. Most of the 19% of US residents who smoke want to quit and have tried to do so. Most individual quit attempts fail, but two-thirds of smokers use no treatment when trying to quit. Treating tobacco dependence is one of the most cost-effective actions in health care. With a brief intervention, physicians can prompt smokers to attempt to quit and connect them to evidence-based treatment that includes pharmacotherapy and behavioral support (ie, counseling). Physicians can link smo

Analysis of the lung microbiome in the "Работает" smoker and in COPD.

Although culture-independent techniques have shown that the lungs are not sterile, little is known about the lung microbiome in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We used pyrosequencing of 16S amplicons to analyze the lung microbiome in two ways: first, using bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) to sample the distal bronchi and air-spaces; and second, by examining multiple discrete tissue sites in the lungs of six subjects removed at the time of transplantation. We performed BAL on three never-smokers (NS) with normal spirometry, seven smokers with normal spirometry ("healthy smokers", HS),

Smokers' melanosis in a Nigerian population: a preliminary study.

AIM: Terms relating to pigmentation of the oral mucosa include physiologic (racial) pigmentation, oral pigmented nevi, oral melanotic maculae, melanoma, and smokers' melanosis. The literature is replete with studies about oral mucosal pigmentation which is thought to result from melanin incontinence. The documented etiological factors are both local and systemic and include hormones, drugs, smoking, and idiopathic causes. This study investigated the prevalence of melanosis among Nigerian smokers and controls who were non-smokers. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A total of 1270 sites were examined in 2

Cancer incidence in a cohort of Finnish male smokers.

A total of 29,133 male smokers, aged 50-69 years, were recruited into the Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta-Carotene Cancer Prevention (ATBC) Study in 1984-1988. The nationwide Finnish Cancer Registry (FCR) recorded 5944 incident cases of cancer in this cohort through the end of 1999. Compared with the FCR data of the entire Finnish male population of same age the standardized incidence ratio (SIR) of total cancer in the ATBC cohort was 1.55 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.51-1.59]. There was a significant excess of established smoking-related malignancies, such as lung cancer (SIR 2.45, 95% CI 2.35-2.56

Lack of startle modulation by smoking cues in smokers.

RATIONALE: The startle reflex methodology has been used to study the effects of nicotine in humans and the motivational effects of smoking cues in smokers. However, no other studies investigate startle modulation by smoking cues in smokers compared to non-smokers. In the other studies, smoking deprivation was manipulated in smokers or smokers were not compared directly to non-smokers. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to examine the temporal course of information processing following the presentation of a smoking-related cue using the startle probe methodology in smokers compared to non-s

CT assessment of subtypes of pulmonary emphysema in smokers.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of subtypes of pulmonary emphysema (PE) identified by CT imaging in male patients who have a significant smoking history. PATIENTS AND SETTING: We reviewed 945 subjects (619 men and 326 women) who had undergone CT scanning. However, only the data for male subjects were analyzed due to there being too few female subjects. The male subjects were divided into the following two age groups: group A (age, </= 50 years) and group B (> 50 years). There were two subtypes of PE found: centrilobular emphysema (CLE) and paraseptal emphysema (PSE). Based on these subt

Monoamine oxidase A and B activities in heavy smokers.

There is a strong association between depression and smoking. Because monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibition leads to antidepressant effect and in vitro studies have shown that cigarette smoke inhibits MAO activity, it is conceivable that smoking may have an antidepressant effect, if smokers have reduced MAO activity. Therefore, we assessed platelet MAO-B activity and plasma concentration of catecholamine metabolites reflecting MAO-A activity in heavy dependent smokers and nonsmokers matched for sociodemographic characteristics. Platelet MAO-B activity, plasma 3,4-dihydroxyphenylglycol, plasma 3,4

Relationship of cytomorphology to spirometric findings in cigarette smokers.

The objective of the study was to determine the relationship between sputum cytomorphology and pulmonary function. A cross-sectional correlation analysis of results from pulmonary function testing and eight cytomorphologic indices of inflammation and metaplasia was conducted in 143 smokers registered in a residential smoking-cessation program. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that after adjusting for age and smoking history, lower levels of pulmonary function were related significantly to higher levels of macrophage pigmentation, neutrophils and metaplasia. Higher levels of macro

Intraoperative pulmonary oedema in a young cocaine smoker.

This is a case of a 28-yr-old man who underwent general anaesthesia for emergency repair of a right lid laceration and lacrimal apparatus. Following induction of anaesthesia and local nasal application of phenylephrine (0.25%) he developed transient elevation of blood pressure, which was treated immediately with labetalol. Subsequently the patient developed acute pulmonary oedema which responded to treatment with morphine and furosemide. The diagnosis of pulmonary oedema was confirmed by blood gas studies, chest x-ray and serial echocardiograms. Subsequent investigation revealed that he was a

Morphological and cellular basis for airflow limitation in smokers.

Airflow limitation has two well-defined components, increased resistance, which is found predominantly in the small airways, and loss of elastic recoil. Small airways contribute to the increased resistance to flow by the narrowing of the airway lumen. Morphometric studies have shown that smokers have increased epithelial abnormalities, cellular inflammatory infiltrates in the airway wall, increased muscle and fibrosis, when compared with nonsmokers. Along with these anatomical changes, an increased percentage of airways < 400 microns in diameter is found. In addition to the measured changes, o

Smoking behavior of type A and type B smokers.

Retrospective surveys have compared smoking between Type A and Type B individuals; however, prospective studies using objective measures have not been reported. In Study 1, we used an ambulatory smoking recorder to compare the smoking behavior of Type A and Type B smokers. Individual smoking behaviors and the derived tobacco and nicotine exposures were similar for Type A and Type B smokers. In Study 2, we compared serum nicotine before and after smoking a cigarette between Type A and Type B smokers. Pre-cigarette and post-cigarette nicotine levels and nicotine boost were similar for Type A and
