Diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders in the first 3 years of life.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a class of neurodevelopmental disorders defined by qualitative impairments in social functioning and communication, often accompanied by repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior and interests. The term 'ASD' encompasses autism, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified, and Asperger's syndrome. ASDs show etiologic heterogeneity, and there is no definitive medical test or cure for these conditions. Around 1 in 150 children have an ASD, with males being affected three to four times more frequently than females. The age at diagnosis of AS

Peers, play, and performance to build social salience in autistic youth: A multisite randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have significant impairment in social competence and reduced social salience. SENSE Theatre, a peer-mediated, theater-based intervention has demonstrated posttreatment gains in face memory and social communication. The multisite randomized clinical trial compared the Experimental (EXP; SENSE Theatre) to an Active Control Condition (ACC; Tackling Teenage Training, TTT) at pretest, posttest, and follow-up. It was hypothesized that the EXP group would demonstrate greater incidental face memory (IFM) and better social behavior (interaction

Severe OCD Exacerbation in a Patient with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Case Report.

Autism Spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social communication and social interaction, repetitive and stereotyped behaviors, and/or sensory aberrations. On the other hand, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by the presence of obsessions and/or compulsions. In consideration of these distinct pathologies, research suggests that anxiety disorders and OCD are highly prevalent in individuals with ASD. This case report will discuss an adolescent patient with ASD and OCD who experiences an exacerbation, most notably, in his sympt

Autonomic arousal to direct gaze correlates with social impairments among children with ASD.

The present study investigated whether autonomic arousal to direct gaze is related to social impairments among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Arousal was measured through skin conductance responses (SCR) while the participants (15 children with ASD and 16 control children) viewed a live face of another person. Impairments in social skills was assessed with the Developmental, Dimensional and Diagnostic Interview. The level of arousal enhancement to direct gaze in comparison to arousal to faces with averted gaze or closed eyes was positively associated with impairments in social s

Autism in a child with common variable immunodeficiency.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder, characterized by poor social interaction and communication impairment and repetitive behavior. Autism is considered as a genetic and multifactorial disorder, with diverse risk factors involved.Herein, we report a 13-year-old male with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID), who was diagnosed with autism at the age of 3 years old. As there are some evidences about the role of the immune system defects in the pathogenesis of autism, specific primary antibody deficiency diseases such as CVID might predispose some affected cases to such neurodevelopmental

Social support among persons with depressive disorders during COVID-19 pandemic.

CONTEXT: The extent of depressive disorders is wide in the Indian population as reported by epidemiological studies, warranting a necessary area of intervention to cover the rampant treatment gap. Social support is known to vary as per the community-level changes, which may be attributed to events kickstarted by COVID-19. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the social support among persons with depressive disorders. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted among 75 individuals of age ranging from 18 to 46 years from multi-ethnic communities across India. We used the Beck Depres

Evaluating cellular communication sensing for lapse risk prediction during early recovery from alcohol use disorder: A longitudinal observational study.

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a chronic, relapsing condition, and identifying periods of elevated lapse risk remains a major challenge in supporting recovery. An automated recovery monitoring and support system using personal sensing and machine learning may help detect when individuals are at heightened risk. Cellular communication sensing may be a promising approach for passively capturing risk-relevant information about social interactions, particularly when these data are contextualized with participant-specific meaning. We evaluated a machine learning model predicting next-day alcohol lap

Social touch and human development.

Social touch is a powerful force in human development, shaping social reward, attachment, cognitive, communication, and emotional regulation from infancy and throughout life. In this review, we consider the question of how social touch is defined from both bottom-up and top-down perspectives. In the former category, there is a clear role for the C-touch (CT) system, which constitutes a unique submodality that mediates affective touch and contrasts with discriminative touch. Top-down factors such as culture, personal relationships, setting, gender, and other contextual influences are also impor

Feedforward and feedback motor control abnormalities implicate cerebellar dysfunctions in autism spectrum disorder.

Sensorimotor abnormalities are common in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and among the earliest manifestations of the disorder. They have been studied far less than the social-communication and cognitive deficits that define ASD, but a mechanistic understanding of sensorimotor abnormalities in ASD may provide key insights into the neural underpinnings of the disorder. In this human study, we examined rapid, precision grip force contractions to determine whether feedforward mechanisms supporting initial motor output before sensory feedback can be processed are disrupted in ASD. Sustained force c

Language disorder and retrospectively reported sexual abuse of girls: severity and disclosure.

BACKGROUND: Despite emerging evidence for an association between communication disorders and maltreatment, little research has examined sexual abuse characteristics or disclosure experiences among individuals with language disorder (LD). Given that communication difficulties may constitute a barrier to disclosure, the disclosure experiences among individuals with and without communication difficulties may also differ. METHODS: Five-year-old children identified with a language and/or speech disorder from a nonclinical community sample and a control group were followed to adulthood in a prospec

Tourette syndrome: a disorder of the social decision-making network.

Tourette syndrome is a common neurodevelopmental disorder defined by characteristic involuntary movements, tics, with both motor and phonic components. Tourette syndrome is usually conceptualized as a basal ganglia disorder, with an emphasis on striatal dysfunction. While considerable evidence is consistent with these concepts, imaging data suggest diffuse functional and structural abnormalities in Tourette syndrome brain. Tourette syndrome exhibits features that are difficult to explain solely based on basal ganglia circuit dysfunctions. These features include the natural history of tic expre

[Autism spectrum syndrome replaces Asperger syndrome and autism].

Autism spectrum disorder describes a behaviourally defined impairment in social interaction and communication, along with the presence of restricted interests and repetitive behaviours. Although the etiology is mostly unknown, it is evident that biological factors affect the brain and result in the autistic clinical presentation. Assessment for diagnosing autism spectrum disorder should be comprehensive in order to cover all sorts of problems related to the disorder. Knowledge and experience from working with neurological and psychiatric disorders are a prerequisite for quality in the examinat

Caring for children with autism in the school setting.

Children with autism present unique challenges related to communication, behavior, and social skills. Each child with an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibits individual characteristics of the disorder. Early identification of autistic spectrum disorder has been shown to improve the child's benefit from educational interventions. There may be health issues related to autism including seizure disorders and dietary restrictions. Students with autism need special consideration when they come to the health office for screening, assessment of injuries, or administration of medication. Collabora

Adults with autism spectrum disorders: a review of outcomes, social attainment, and interventions.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: With the increasing incidence of individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders, there is a need to develop programs to support them throughout their lifespan but research in adulthood support is still scarce. This article aims to provide an up-to-date review of the research on the core characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), social attainments, and efforts to improve their outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS: The core social communication impairments continue into adulthood among persons with ASD, but the restrictive, repetitive patterns of behavior and activities h

Neighborhood experience and hoarding disorder.

Hoarding disorder is a relatively common psychiatric condition with a variety of adverse social and individual consequences. People with hoarding report high rates of loneliness and interpersonal dysfunction; however, little is known about how people with hoarding experience and function within their broader social systems (e.g., neighborhoods and communities). Neighborhood experience mediates the effects of one's environment on mental health outcomes, suggesting that it may be relevant to psychiatric disorders such as hoarding disorder that are accompanied by social dysfunction. The Association Between Autism Symptoms and Child Functioning in a Sample With ADHD Recruited From the Community.

Objective: Although autism spectrum disorder (ASD) symptoms are associated with poorer functioning in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), it is unclear which ASD symptom domains are most impairing. This study investigated whether specific ASD symptom domains were associated with child functioning in children with ADHD. Method: Parents of 164 children with ADHD completed a diagnostic interview to assess ADHD and comorbidities. Parents reported on ASD symptoms (Social Communication Questionnaire) and child quality of life (Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0). Pare
