Community-based social connection intervention programme to improve cardiovascular and brain health in older adults in rural Ecuador: study protocol for a quasi-experimental trial.

INTRODUCTION: Loneliness and social isolation are increasingly recognised as determinants of cardiovascular and brain health, particularly among older adults. Evidence from high-income settings links social disconnection to higher risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, cognitive decline and mortality, yet few interventions have been adapted for rural, resource-limited environments. In rural coastal Ecuador, demographic stability, low migration and strong community engagement provide a unique context to evaluate a culturally grounded intervention. This study aims to determine whether a multi-c

Hong Kong children's posited "vulnerability" to social influence on substance abuse.

A survey of 2,051 pupils between Grade 4 and Grade 7 in 2003 showed that social influence or encouragement to substance use was a significant determinant of substance use risk, controlling for prior substance use and other backgrounds. Contextual stress or unhappiness among parents, classmates, and other people around operated jointly with social influence to promote substance use risk. This finding accords with a dovetail model about the extra influence due to the joining of force and receptivity to the force. Further research is necessary to corroborate the present findings obtained from a p

Why adoption is not an option in India: the visibility of infertility, the secrecy of donor insemination, and other cultural complexities.

Child adoption in the face of reproduction gone awry continues to remain an under researched aspect of contemporary Indian reality. This paper seeks to unpack some of the critical cultural issues underscoring the deep-seated reluctance towards adoption. Drawing on a larger multi-sited research project examining the experience of infertility and assisted conception in India, the paper sheds light on the state of current adoption practices in India. Thus, when faced with infertility, couples in this research emerged as favouring secret gamete donation as a means of bypassing infertility rather t

Professions, families, and control in the management of the cadaver organ donor.

In times of medical crisis, control over the treatment process is vested with the patient's attending physician. The role of the other members of the treatment team is clearly supporting of the physician while the patient's family exercises little or no influence over the treatment process. In certain "rare" events, the traditional roles are suspended and control of the process is, at lest temporarily, shifted to an outside group of health professionals. The process of cadaver organ donor donation is presented as an example of the suspension of traditional role responsibilities and the delegat

Family therapy: its role in the prevention of criminality.

The family imprints its members with selfhood in all cultures. Absence of family imprints can result in the development of deviant childhood behavior and loss of identity. In two black racial groups in dissimilar world areas and sampling (Kenya, Africa and Newark, N.J.), five familial determinants interfered with the development of culturally accepted family imprints and led to deviant and criminal behavior. It is suggested that if these deterrents, namely poverty, lack of family authority figures, rejection of of the individual child, absence of family cohesiveness, and loss of individual ide

When a luxury brand bursts: Modelling the social media viral effects of negative stereotypes adoption leading to brand hate.

In early 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) developed the term "infodemic" to describe the velocity at which data can be exchanged among people, in a free virtual space where firms have limited control over the information diffusion. In particular, the diffusion of information on social media has analogies with the transmission (contagion) of social phenomena and infectious diseases. The aim of this research is to model the viral effects of a luxury marketing campaign when adopting negative stereotypes to increase the market share in a growing market. The campaign generated 506,127 like

Social anxiety is characterized by biased learning about performance and the self.

People learn about their self from social information, and recent work suggests that healthy adults show a positive bias for learning self-related information. In contrast, social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by a negative view of the self, yet what causes and maintains this negative self-view is not well understood. Here the authors use a novel experimental paradigm and computational model to test the hypothesis that biased social learning regarding self-evaluation and self-feelings represents a core feature that distinguishes adults with SAD from healthy controls. Twenty-one adult

Influence of alcohol on the processing of emotional facial expressions in individuals with social phobia.

OBJECTIVES: Individuals with social phobia are at an increased risk to develop alcohol problems. However, the mechanism responsible for this association is unclear. It has been suggested that alcohol reduces anxiety by impairing initial appraisal of threatening stimuli. Information that is especially threatening, however, may be resistant to such an effect of alcohol. We tested the influence of alcohol on the appraisal of five emotional facial expressions. METHODS: 40 social phobia patients and 40 controls performed a dot probe task, after drinking either alcohol or orange juice. Stimuli were

Correlates of Social Exclusion in Social Anxiety Disorder: An fMRI study.

Cognitive models posit that social anxiety disorder (SAD) is maintained by biased information-processing vis-à-vis threat of social exclusion. However, uncertainty still abounds regarding the very nature of this sensitivity to social exclusion in SAD. Especially, brain alterations related to social exclusion have not been explored in SAD. Our primary purpose was thus to determine both the self-report and neural correlates of social exclusion in this population. 23 patients with SAD and 23 matched nonanxious controls played a virtual game ("Cyberball") during fMRI recording. Participants were f

The effects of positive interpretation bias on cognitive reappraisal and social performance: Implications for social anxiety disorder.

People with social anxiety disorder (SAD) lack non-socially anxious individuals' tendency to interpret ambiguous social information in a positively biased manner. To gain a better understanding of the specific in-vivo social consequences of positive interpretation bias, we recruited 38 individuals with SAD and 31 healthy controls (HC) to participate in an in-vivo social task. We tested whether a positive interpretation bias, measured using a sentence completion task, might confer benefits for the adaptive emotion regulation strategy of cognitive reappraisal, and whether such benefits depended

Altered social and cognitive control interactions during decision-making in social anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety is characterized by fear and avoidance of social situations, yet many everyday decisions are made in the presence of others and are shaped by social influence. However, the influences of social anxiety on social decision-making and the underlying neural processes are not well understood. METHODS: Fifty-five adults with varying levels of social anxiety completed a social risk decision-making task during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In each trial, participants chose between a safe option and a risky gamble against either a human or a computer opponent

Clinical patterns in social cognition & personality changes in progressive supranuclear palsy.

Research suggests some individuals with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) have socioemotional deficits, typically characterized as reduced emotion recognition, difficulty with perspective taking, and increased apathy. However, the variability of these deficits across individuals and the pattern of impairments across the spectrum of social cognition have not been quantified in larger samples. The present study used multiple face-to-face and informant-based social cognition, neuropsychiatry, and personality measures to identify socioemotional changes occurring as a result of PSP. Data were co

Social support and depressive symptoms: the role of childhood maltreatment and brain activity in a moderated mediation model.

Low social support, characterised by insufficient emotional, instrumental, or informational aid, increases the risk of major depressive disorder (MDD), yet its impact on brain function remains unclear. To examine this, we recruited 32 participants with MDD and low social support, 52 with high social support, and 54 healthy controls. We collected data including functional magnetic resonance imaging measures, sociodemographic information, social support dimensions, depressive symptom severity, and childhood maltreatment to investigate how social support relates to neural activity and depression

A preliminary investigation of a novel training to target cognitive biases towards negative social stimuli in Anorexia Nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) experience high levels of social difficulties and anxiety. These problems might be underpinned by negatively biased processing of social stimuli. The aim of this study was to examine the feasibility of using a novel Cognitive Bias Modification (CBM) training to target information processing biases in patients with AN. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with AN completed a baseline and end of intervention assessment of mood and social appraisals. The CBM training consisted of 5 sessions and included an attentional probe task to train attention toward

Altered white matter fractional anisotropy and social impairment in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have severe difficulties in social interaction and communication, as well as restricted and/or stereotyped patterns of behavior. Previous studies have suggested that abnormal neural connectivity might be associated with higher information processing dysfunction involving social impairment. However, the white matter structure in ASD is poorly understood. To explore this, we conducted a voxel-based, whole-brain diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) analysis to determine fractional anisotropy (FA), λ(1), λ(2) and λ(3) in high-functioning children with ASD
