Behavioral and socio-emotional functioning in children with selective mutism: a comparison with anxious and typically developing children across multiple informants.

We examined differences among 158 children, 44 with selective mutism (SM; M = 8.2 years, SD = 3.4 years), 65 with mixed anxiety (MA; M = 8.9 years, SD = 3.2 years), and 49 community controls (M = 7.7 years, SD = 2.6 years) on primary caregiver, teacher, and child reports of behavioral and socio-emotional functioning. Children with SM were rated lower than controls on a range of social skills, but the SM and MA groups did not significantly differ on many of the social skills and anxiety measures. However, children with SM were rated higher than children with MA and controls on social anxiety. F

Female Aggression and Mental Health: A Systematic Review.

This systematic review synthesizes findings on female-to-female aggression and its mental health consequences across the lifespan. Although bullying among females represents a significant public health concern, the literature has historically underexamined how relational forms of aggression, including social exclusion, gossip, and peer manipulation, affect women over time. Three research questions organized the review: (a) How do negative social groups affect women? (b) What are the longer-term consequences of childhood bullying for women in adulthood? (c) What outcomes are associated with agg

Effect of the social environment on olfaction and social skills in wild-type and a mouse model of autism.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are complex, polygenic and heterogenous neurodevelopmental conditions. The severity of autism-associated variants is influenced by environmental factors, particularly social experiences during the critical neurodevelopmental period. While early behavioral interventions have shown efficacy in some children with autism, pharmacological support for core features - impairments in social interaction and communication, and stereotyped or restricted behaviors - is currently lacking. In this study, we examined how the social environment influences both wild-type (WT) an

The Influence of Robot Facial Expression and Inclusion Behavior on Rapport and Trust in Older Adults: Mixed-Factorial Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization framework for healthy aging emphasizes that the capacity to establish and sustain relationships is a vital component of functional ability. Social robots offer valuable support for this relational aspect, although their effectiveness is contingent upon the quality of the interactions. While it is established that facial expressions and inclusive behaviors can influence rapport building, the combined effects of these elements on older adults remain unexamined. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the main and interaction effects of robot facial e

Distinct neurocomputational mechanisms support informational and socially normative conformity.

A change of mind in response to social influence could be driven by informational conformity to increase accuracy, or by normative conformity to comply with social norms such as reciprocity. Disentangling the behavioural, cognitive, and neurobiological underpinnings of informational and normative conformity have proven elusive. Here, participants underwent fMRI while performing a perceptual task that involved both advice-taking and advice-giving to human and computer partners. The concurrent inclusion of 2 different social roles and 2 different social partners revealed distinct behavioural and

"Nature is there; its free": Urban greenspace and the social determinants of health of immigrant families.

In this article, we draw on a 2012 Montreal-based study that examined the embodied, every day practices of immigrant children and families in the context of urban greenspaces such as parks, fields, backyards, streetscapes, gardens, forests and rivers. Results suggest that activities in the natural environment serve as a protective factor in the health and well-being of this population, providing emotional and physical nourishment in the face of adversity. Using the Social Determinants of Health model adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO, 1998), we analyze how participants accessed urb

Artificial intelligence-enabled social robots for facilitating social interactions in patients with dementia: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The global rise in dementia, closely linked to aging populations, necessitates innovative interventions to address care challenges. Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Social Robots (AI-ESRs) present a promising approach by leveraging multi-modal communication to enhance social engagement and alleviate isolation. However, evidence regarding their efficacy remains inconsistent and fragmented. This systematic review evaluates the effectiveness of AI-ESRs in enhancing social interactions among people with dementia, examines factors contributing to outcome variability, and provides recomme

While foundational frameworks exist, implementation outcomes of specific admissions policies remain underexplored. This scoping review maps how social mission mandates are operationalized within medical school admissions and examines reported impacts on applicant diversity, geographic representation and workforce alignment. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review using the Joanna Briggs Institute and Ark

Mental Imagery in Social Anxiety in Children and Young People: A Systematic Review.

Current cognitive models of social anxiety disorder (SAD) in adults indicate that negative self-images play a pivotal role in maintaining the disorder. However, little is known about the role of negative imagery in the maintenance of social anxiety for children and young people. We systematically reviewed studies that have investigated the association between imagery and social anxiety in children and young people. Four databases were searched for 'social anxiety' and related terms (including 'social phobia' and 'performance anxiety') combined with 'imagery', 'representation*', and 'observer p

Breaking the ice for a low-carbon consumption transition in developing countries: The role of digital literacy.

Understanding the impact of digital literacy on this transition holds significant practical value for global carbon emission reduction. From the perspective of institutional capacity, this paper constructs a framework to analyze the institutional system of digital literacy in facilitating low-carbon consumption transitions. Using data from the China Family Panel Survey 2014-2022, this study adopts regression analysis and heterogeneity tests to examine how digital literacy influences rural households' shift toward low-carbon consumption. The findings reveal that digital literacy significantly e

Measuring Disability Inclusion: Feasibility of Using Existing Multidimensional Poverty Data in South Africa.

This paper presents a framework for measuring disability inclusion in order to examine the associations between disability severity and levels of inclusion, provides an example of its operationalization, and assesses the feasibility of using an existing dataset to measure disability inclusion using this framework. Inclusion here refers to the extent to which people with disabilities are accepted and recognized as individuals with authority, enjoy personal relationships, participate in recreation and social activities, have appropriate living conditions, are able to make productive contribution

Understanding the conditions for inclusive education: A realist evaluation of a French territorial innovation.

Article 24 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) calls for inclusive education systems. Despite this mandate, collaboration between schools and specialized services often remains limited. This study examined the systemic conditions that enable effective inclusion, extending beyond pedagogical approaches through a complexity-informed framework. Using a realist evaluation, the research investigated an innovative inclusive education initiative implemented in the Eure-et-Loir district in France for children and young people with neurodevelopmental dis
