Validating the Factor Structure of the Fujisawa Social Capital Scale (FSCS) Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults Participating in "Kayoi-no-ba": The Gunma Aging Cohort Study.

Social capital is a fundamental social determinant of health for older adults in rapidly aging societies; however, existing comprehensive instruments often impose high cognitive friction through complex recall tasks, potentially leading to systematically excluding vulnerable populations. This study validated the factor structure of the Fujisawa Social Capital Scale (FSCS) - an independent, brief tool designed for inclusive community-based practice - among community-dwelling Japanese older adults participating in "Kayoi-no-ba" (neighborhood social participation hubs). Data were analyzed from 58

Heterozygous mutation of sonic hedgehog receptor (Ptch1) drives cerebellar overgrowth and sex-specifically alters hippocampal and cortical layer structure, activity, and social behavior in female mice.

Sonic hedgehog (SHH) signaling is essential for the differentiation and migration of early stem cell populations during cerebellar development. Dysregulation of SHH-signaling can result in cerebellar overgrowth and the formation of the brain tumor medulloblastoma. Treatment for medulloblastoma is extremely aggressive and patients suffer life-long side effects including behavioral deficits. Considering that other behavioral disorders including autism spectrum disorders, holoprosencephaly, and basal cell nevus syndrome are known to present with cerebellar abnormalities, it is proposed that some

Social and structural determinants of SARS-CoV-2 testing and positivity among immigrant and non-immigrant children in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, Portugal.

Understanding the social and structural determinants that affect children's access to SARS-CoV-2 testing and their infection risk informs policies to reduce health inequalities. However, evidence on testing and test positivity among immigrant young children in Europe is limited. We linked national laboratory surveillance data, primary health care records, and cohort baseline data for children born in 2018 and 2020 living in four municipalities in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area to analyse determinants of SARS-CoV-2 testing and positivity rates. Our analysis focused on migratory status and conside

Moderation of financial stress and cardiovascular disease risk in black catholics: A social-ecological pathway utilizing latent class and structural equation analyses.

BACKGROUND: Chronic financial stress drives cardiovascular disease (CVD), yet its impact within Black Catholic communities remains understudied. Using a profile-based, socio-ecological framework, we centered chronic financial stress and low Mental Component Summary (MCS) scores, as correlates of downstream health risk, and we modeled racial discrimination as an upstream moderator that intensifies this trajectory. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from 285 racially and religiously diverse adults were analyzed. Latent class analysis (LCA) identified distinct stress profiles, and structural equation

Punitive school discipline as a mechanism of structural marginalization with implications for health inequity: A systematic review of quantitative studies in the health and social sciences literature.

Punitive school discipline deploys surveillance, exclusion, and corporal punishment to deter or account for perceived student misbehavior. Yet, education and legal scholarship suggests it fails to achieve stated goals and exacerbates harm. Furthermore, it is disproportionately imposed upon Black, Latinx, Native/Indigenous, LGBTQIA, and disabled students, concentrating its harms among marginalized young people. Its implications for health, however, are less clear. Using public health theories of sociostructural embodiment, we propose a framework characterizing pathways linking societal ideologi

The mediation of resilience between physical activity, parenting style, and social anxiety among Chinese adolescents: evidence from a structural equation model.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent social anxiety is a common mental health problem. Although physical activity and parenting style have both been linked to anxiety, their joint associations with social anxiety and the mediating role of resilience remain unclear. This study tested an integrated model of physical activity, parenting style, resilience, and social anxiety in Chinese adolescents. METHODS: A total of 1,094 adolescents completed measures of physical activity, parenting style, resilience, and social anxiety. Structural equation modelling was used to examine direct and indirect associations amon

Social and Structural Factors Associated with Sustained Viral Suppression Among Heterosexual Black Men with Diagnosed HIV in the United States, 2015-2017.

This paper describes sociodemographic, sexual risk behavior, and clinical care factors associated with sustained viral suppression (SVS) among heterosexual Black men with diagnosed HIV in the US. Sample was 968 men, 2015-2017 cycles of Medical Monitoring Project. We used prevalence ratios and a multivariable logistic regression model to identify independent predictors of SVS. About 9% of sexually active men had sex that carries a risk of HIV transmission. Nearly 2/3 lived at or below the poverty level, 13% were under or uninsured, 1/4 experienced food insecurity and 15% reported recent homeles

Structural neuroimaging correlates of social deficits are similar in autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: analysis from the POND Network.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have been associated with difficulties recognizing and responding to social cues. Neuroimaging studies have begun to map the social brain; however, the specific neural substrates contributing to social deficits in neurodevelopmental disorders remain unclear. Three hundred and twelve children underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging of the brain (controls = 32, OCD = 44, ADHD = 77, ASD = 159; mean age = 11). Their social deficits were quantified on the Social Communica

Structure and function differences in the prelimbic cortex to basolateral amygdala circuit mediate trait vulnerability in a novel model of acute social defeat stress in male mice.

Stressful life events are ubiquitous and well-known to negatively impact mental health. However, in both humans and animal models, there is large individual variability in how individuals respond to stress, with some but not all experiencing long-term adverse consequences. While there is growing understanding of the neurobiological underpinnings of the stress response, much less is known about how neurocircuits shaped by lifetime experiences are activated during an initial stressor and contribute to this selective vulnerability versus resilience. We developed a model of acute social defeat str

Childhood trauma and social support affect symptom profiles through cortical thickness abnormalities in major depressive disorder: A structural equation modeling analysis.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma, low social support, and alexithymia are recognized as risk factors for major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the mechanisms of risk factors, symptoms, and corresponding structural brain abnormalities in MDD are not fully understood. Structural equation modeling (SEM) has advantages in studying multivariate interrelationships. We aim to illustrate their relationships using SEM. METHODS: 313 MDD patients (213 female; mean age 42.49 years) underwent magnetic resonance imaging and completed assessments. We integrated childhood trauma, alexithymia, social support,

Social and structural determinants of health associated with police violence victimization: A latent class analysis of female sex workers who use drugs in Kazakhstan.

INTRODUCTION: Punitive legal environments remain a challenge to HIV prevention efforts in Central Asia, and female sex workers who use drugs are vulnerable to police violence. Little is known about the heterogeneity of police violence against female sex workers who use drugs and factors associated with HIV risk in Central Asia, despite the growing HIV epidemic. METHODS: We recruited a community-based sample of 255 female sex workers who use drugs in Almaty, Kazakhstan between February 2015 and May 2017. We used latent class analysis to differentiate women into distinct classes of police viole

Analysis of associations between emotions and activities of drug users and their addiction recovery tendencies from social media posts using structural equation modeling.

BACKGROUND: Addiction to drugs and alcohol constitutes one of the significant factors underlying the decline in life expectancy in the US. Several context-specific reasons influence drug use and recovery. In particular emotional distress, physical pain, relationships, and self-development efforts are known to be some of the factors associated with addiction recovery. Unfortunately, many of these factors are not directly observable and quantifying, and assessing their impact can be difficult. Based on social media posts of users engaged in substance use and recovery on the forum Reddit, we empl

Social Participation Modifies the Effect of a Structured Physical Activity Program on Major Mobility Disability Among Older Adults: Results From the LIFE Study.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether baseline social participation modifies the effect of a long-term structured physical activity (PA) program on major mobility disability (MMD). METHODS: 1,635 sedentary adults (70-89 years) with physical limitations were randomized to either a structured PA or health education (HE) intervention. Social participation was defined categorically at baseline. High social participation was defined as attending organized group functions at least once per week and visiting with noncohabitating friends and family ≥7 hr per week. Anything less was considered limited so

Social-structural factors influencing periods of injection cessation among marginalized youth who inject drugs in Vancouver, Canada: an ethno-epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: Injection drug use is associated with HIV and hepatitis C transmission, overdose, and other preventable harms. These harms are heightened for structurally vulnerable injection drug-using populations, as their social conditions pose barriers to safer injecting. Previous research on injection cessation has largely focused on adult drug-using populations. Little qualitative work has examined the social, structural, and environmental factors that shape periods of injection cessation among youth and young adults. Such research is essential to understanding how we can best reduce harms a
