Social support as a multifaceted concept: examination of important dimensions for adjustment.

Four commonly used operationalizations of the social support concept: network contact frequency, satisfaction with support (including nine dimensions), perceived availability of support, and use of support, were related to two measures of psychological adjustment (Beck Depression Inventory and Symptom Checklist-90) and to one measure of physical adjustment (Cornell Medical Index). Subjects were 68 45- to 85-year-old, highly stressed care-givers to spouses with Alzheimer's disease. Results indicate that of the four operationalizations, Satisfaction with Support was the only significant predicto…

The structure and function of social support networks in families with handicapped children.

Three structural characteristics of social support networks (size, density, and boundary density) and two relationship characteristics (reciprocity and dimensionality) were assessed in a sample of 56 families with a child with spina bifida and 53 matched comparison families. The results indicate that social networks of families with handicapped children tended to be smaller than the networks of comparison families, particularly with regard to mothers' total and friendship networks. The networks of families with handicapped children were more dense as well. As predicted, there was greater bound…

Effects of social support in the stressor-strain relationship: a Dutch sample.

Social support may be defined as the social ties an individual has, and which lead the subject to believe that he is cared for. The present study describes research on the hypothesis that social support protects the person against the noxious effects of job stress and will keep the strain and health effects low. A short review of relevant literature is given and 6 hypotheses about the role of support are tested; 3 about the interactive effects and 3 about the main effects. The study resembles the work of LaRocco, House and French, although there are some differences. Like these authors, a mode…

The impact of social deprivation on paranoia, hallucinations, mania and depression: the role of discrimination social support, stress and trust.

The negative implications of living in a socially unequal society are now well documented. However, there is poor understanding of the pathways from specific environmental risk to symptoms. Here we examine the associations between social deprivation, depression, and psychotic symptoms using the 2007 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey, a cross-sectional dataset including 7,353 individuals. In addition we looked at the mediating role of stress, discrimination, trust and lack of social support. We found that the participants' neighbourhood index of multiple deprivation (IMD) significantly predict…

Changes in adolescents' asthma knowledge, social support-seeking behaviors, and asthma self-management following an online peer support program.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with asthma often experience inadequate disease knowledge, limited social support, and poor self-management, which may adversely affect asthma control and quality of life. Online peer support programs offer a promising approach to complement conventional asthma education by addressing both educational and psychosocial needs. AIM: To examine changes in adolescents' asthma knowledge, social support-seeking behaviors, and asthma self-management following participation in an online peer support program. METHODS: A one-group quasi-experimental pretest-posttest study was co…

Support system networks: how support systems shape problematic social media use, mental health, and substance use in Czech adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Problematic social media use (PSMU) has become a critical public health issue, with adolescents being one of the most engaged demographic. However, little is known about how distinct social support systems shape the associations between PSMU, mental health, and substance use. OBJECTIVE: The first objective was to compare how support systems (peer, classmate, teacher, family, and self) shape the associations between PSMU, mental health, and substance use. The second objective was to explore which support systems are most prominent among boys and girls. METHODOLOGY: A representativ…

mHealth Social Support Versus Standard Support for Diabetes Management in Safety-Net Emergency Department Patients: Randomized Phase-III Trial.

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) is a low-cost method to improve health for patients with diabetes seeking care in safety-net emergency departments, resulting in improved medication adherence and self-management. Additions of social support to mHealth interventions could further enhance diabetes self-management by increasing the gains and the postintervention maintenance. OBJECTIVE: We assessed outcomes of an unblinded, parallel, equal-allocation randomized phase-III trial that tested a social support mHealth intervention to improve emergency department patients' diabetes self-management. …

Support-seeking about social relationships with friends is associated with friendship quality, emotional support, and self-disclosure in adolescence.

Adolescent friendships offer a crucial context for learning to seek social support. Through repeated social support encounters, adolescents take in social information and shape their own development. The current study characterizes adolescents' support-seeking discussion topics with close friends, how the topics are influenced by adolescent age and gender, and how they are related to interpersonal processes in close friendships. A community sample of 184 adolescents (85 boys, 99 girls; 58% white, 29% Black, 13% other identity groups) participated annually from age 13 to 18. Through these six w…

Survey Evaluation of the Role of Social Media and Social Support for Transgender, Nonbinary, and Intersex People: Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people experience greater health disparities than their cisgender counterparts. Social determinants of health are linked to these health disparities in minority communities, including the TGD community. Lack of social support contributes significantly to these disparities for the TGD community. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of social media and social support groups among TGD patients who attend a transgender clinic. METHODS: A questionnaire was developed through an iterative process and emailed to TGD people attendi…

Artificial intelligence for relational reconnection and social support in Alzheimer's disease: a conceptual framework for socially embedded systems.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) has traditionally been approached through a biomedical lens, focusing on neurodegenerative markers such as amyloid-β plaques and tau protein accumulation. However, clinical evidence increasingly demonstrates that social dysfunction, which includes identity confusion, emotional withdrawal, and breakdowns in social roles. This article reconceptualizes AD as a disorder in which the primary dimension of decline lies in social relationship management capacity (SRMC), while recognizing that neurobiological and cognitive deterioration remain integral to its manifestation and

Assessing social support in older adults with cognitive disorders living in institutions.

OBJECTIVES: Although social support is a major dimension of well-being, there is a lack of appropriate tools to assess it in older adults with neurocognitive disorders. This study aims to provide a validation of an adapted version of the Perceived Social Support Questionnaire (PSSQ) for this population. A secondary objective was to investigate whether psychosocial and cognitive outcomes varied according to the category of persons perceived as available (family, professionals, friends, residents). METHOD: 113 nursing home residents with neurocognitive disorders were administered the adapted PS…

Death literacy as relational capability: Pathways from social capital to emotional support.

BACKGROUND: Death literacy not only refers to the knowledge and skills of individuals; there is emerging evidence that death literacy is relational and is deepened via social networks and within communities. Exploring these relationships can improve our understanding of pathways that influence death literacy and public health palliative care initiatives. OBJECTIVES: To examine how community-level resources (social capital) influence perceived emotional support, and to test theoretically motivated mediators-including community openness to conversations about death, participation in end-of-life

Navigating Intimate Partner Violence and Social Support Services: Testimonials of Latina Survivors.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has surged across the United States, with undocumented Latina immigrants from South and Central America disproportionately affected. The heightened immigration enforcement has further discouraged help-seeking, creating significant barriers to accessing formal support systems. This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of 15 undocumented Latina IPV survivors in Westchester County, New York. Drawing on seven in-depth, semistructured interviews, the study examined how participants navigate support with complex social and structural constraints. Find

Modeling social support and life satisfaction in running groups through stress management.

BACKGROUND: The fast-paced and stressful conditions of modern life have increased the need for social and emotional resources that enhance individuals’ psychological resilience. Leisure activities, especially group-based physical exercises, offer significant social and psychological benefits. Among these, recreational running groups stand out, positively influencing participants in various ways. This study aimed to examine the mediating role of stress management in the relationship between recreational runners’ perceived social support and life satisfaction using structural equation modeling a…

Family members' well-being, mindfulness, loneliness, and social support: A dyadic approach.

INTRODUCTION: Individual experiences within the family can influence its dynamics in relation to each other. The current study investigated the mediating role of adolescent and parent mindfulness in the relationship between adolescents' loneliness and their parents' perceived social support, parent mental well-being, and adolescent subjective well-being. Subjective well-being refers primarily to individuals' cognitive evaluations of their life and their affective experiences, whereas mental well-being involves broader psychological functioning such as coping, productivity, and one's sense of c…

Longitudinal Relationships Between Social Anxiety, Peer Victimisation, and Perceived Support Among Children.

Social anxiety, peer victimisation, and social support are key issues during mid-childhood that provide important influence in the later adolescent years. While extensive research has evaluated these constructs in isolation and during adolescence, almost no longitudinal studies have evaluated relationships between them during mid-childhood. The current study obtained self-report measures of social anxiety, peer victimisation, and social support from a close friend, from 7846 students from grades three and four (M age = 9.01 yr), on three occasions over two years. Path analyses examined mediati…

Chronic stress, social support, and domain-specific cognitive decline in HABS-HD.

INTRODUCTION: Few studies have examined the longitudinal associations between chronic stress, social support, and cognitive decline or whether sociodemographic factors modify associations. METHODS: We included 3873 older adults enrolled in the Health and Aging Brain Study-Health Disparities (HABS-HD). Longitudinal mixed-effects models were used to examine associations of baseline chronic stress and social support with changes in domain-specific cognitive z-scores (attention, memory, executive functioning, language). Interactions between baseline chronic stress or social support and gender or …
