Definitive closure of atrial septal defects (ASDs) has been reported in dogs utilizing a variety of methods, including device occlusion. We report five dogs with ASD in which multidimensional imaging with computed tomography angiography (CTA) and three-dimensional reconstruction was utilized to assess suitability for device occlusion. Three dogs were initially evaluated for an asymptomatic murmur noted during routine preventative care visits, and two had presenting complaints of mild exercise intolerance. Concurrent congenital heart disease was diagnosed in four of the dogs including pulmonary

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: In humans with mitral valve disease, integration of echocardiographic variables with quantified mitral regurgitation (MR) is recommended. Quantification of MR has not been widely adopted in dogs. Mitral regurgitant fraction (MR%) has not been systematically reported in relation to other echocardiographic variables in myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD).
ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Echocardiograms from 237 small-breed dogs with MMVD that included calculation of MR% were identified retrospectively. Mitral regurgitant fraction, monodimensional and bidimensional va

A one-and-a-half-year-old spayed female domestic shorthaired cat, originally obtained as a stray, presented with a two-day history of lethargy, anorexia, and progressive dyspnea. Point-of-care ultrasound showed marked bilateral pleural effusion and a small volume of ascites. Thoracocentesis resulted in the removal of 220 mL of protein poor transudate. Subsequently, a gallop was auscultated and an echocardiogram was performed. Significant findings on echocardiography were a dilated cardiomyopathy phenotype characterized by biventricular eccentric hypertrophy with normal left ventricular diastol

INTRODUCTION: The employment of advanced molecular biology technologies has expanded the diagnostic investigation of cardiomyopathies in dogs; these technologies have predominantly been performed on postmortem samples, although the recent use of endomyocardial biopsy in living dogs has enabled a better premortem diagnostic approach to study the myocardial injury.
ANIMALS, MATERIALS, AND METHODS: Endomyocardial biopsies were collected in nine dogs with a dilated cardiomyopathy phenotype (DCM-p) and congestive heart failure and submitted to histologic examination, next-generation sequencing (NG

INTRODUCTION: Right ventricular (RV) dysfunction is a significant negative prognostic indicator in human dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Many RV indices are weight-dependent, and there is a lack of reference values for the right heart in giant breed dogs (over 50 kg), including Great Danes (GDs). This study aimed to compare indices of RV function in echocardiographically normal GDs, those with preclinical DCM (PC-DCM), and those with DCM and congestive heart failure (DCM-CHF).
ANIMALS: A total of 116 client-owned adult GDs: 74 normal, 31 with PC-DCM, and 11 with DCM-CHF.
METHODS: A retrospecti

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the echocardiographic effects of intravenous medetomidine and vatinoxan in dogs with stage B1 mitral valve disease. We hypothesised medetomidine-vatinoxan would reduce the need for manual restraint during echocardiography without producing detrimental cardiovascular effects or echocardiographic changes.
ANIMALS: Twelve client-owned dogs with stage B1 mitral valve disease.
METHODS: A transthoracic echocardiographic examination was performed before and after sedation with intravenous medetomidine (10 μg/kg) and vatinoxan (200

An 11-year-old, female, spayed, soft-coated Wheaten terrier presented for acute onset of neurological signs. On presentation, neurological examination showed right thoracic and pelvic limb proprioceptive deficits, absent right menace reflex, and weak right nasal septum response. A left thalamocortical lesion was localized. On thoracic auscultation, an arrhythmia was noted, and electrocardiography showed frequent ventricular premature complexes and rare runs of ventricular tachycardia. Echocardiography identified an interventricular septal mass extending into the lumen of the left ventricle. Th

A nine-year-old male neutered domestic Shorthair cat presented on referral for evaluation. The cat presented to its primary veterinarian for acute onset vomiting, panting, and weakness. An electrocardiogram performed at the regular veterinarian was concerning for ventricular tachycardia, and the cat was referred for further evaluation. An echocardiogram revealed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and a review of the electrocardiogram revealed findings suggestive of ventricular pre-excitation alternans with the suspect pre-excited complexes appearing to alternate with sinus complexes. This is the fir

An 11-year-old male neutered American bulldog was presented for evaluation of thrombocytopenia, acute onset of ataxia, and vomiting. A new murmur was auscultated on physical examination. Transthoracic echocardiographic examination revealed a bicuspid aortic valve, vegetative lesions on the aortic valve, and continuous shunting from the aortic root to the left atrium through an aorta to left atrial fistula. The dog was euthanized due to its guarded prognosis and critical condition. Pathological examination confirmed presence of a bicuspid aortic valve, aorto-left atrial fistula, and aortic infe

Implantable loop recorders (ILRs) are increasingly used in equine cardiology to detect arrhythmias in the context of collapse, poor performance or monitoring for recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF). However to date, the ILR has never been reported to be used with a remote monitoring functionality in horses, therefore the arrhythmia is only discovered when a clinician interrogates the ILR using dedicated equipment, which might delay diagnosis and intervention. This case report describes the use of an ILR with remote monitoring functionality in a horse with recurrent AF. The remote monitoring

Feline arterial thromboembolism has been reported to be secondary to various feline cardiomyopathies; however, it has not been described in cats with transient myocardial thickening. A previously healthy, one-year-old, castrated male cat presented with acute paraparesis and congestive heart failure. Echocardiography revealed asymmetric left ventricular free wall thickening and left atrial enlargement. Antithrombotic treatment and cardiac medication resulted in reperfusion and mobility on day seven in one limb and on day 10 in the other. Different complications were managed successfully, includ

Three cats were presented for unusual collapsing episodes. Echocardiography revealed a hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) phenotype in each cat. Continuous electrocardiographic monitoring showed that the clinical signs coincided with periods of severe ST-segment elevation in each cat. The first cat was treated with amlodipine and diltiazem but did not improve and was euthanized due to poor quality of life. Postmortem examination revealed cardiac lymphoma without obstructive coronary disease. The second cat was thought to have cardiac lymphoma, based on pericardial effusion cytology, and was eut

A five-month-old, female, entirely domestic short-haired cat was referred for evaluation of a continuous heart murmur. No associated clinical signs were reported. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a large, left-to-right shunting patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Transjugular occlusion of the defect was achieved using a Vet-PDA Occluder™ device, a new conic-shaped nitinol spiral device designed for PDA closure in small-sized dogs weighing less than 3 kg. Resolution of the continuous heart murmur was identified after device deployment. This case report demonstrates that the Vet-PDA Occluder™

A five-month-old male intact Goldendoodle presented for evaluation for peripheral cyanosis following exercise. Transthoracic echocardiography demonstrated severe right ventricular wall thickening and right atrial dilation secondary to pulmonary hypertension. An agitated saline contrast study demonstrated an interatrial right-to-left shunt. Cardiac-gated computed tomography confirmed a reverse patent ductus arteriosus. This case report highlights the utility of cardiac-gated computed tomography in identifying multi-level intra- and extra-cardiac shunts.

A four-year-old spayed female Shiba Inu dog weighing 6.1 kg presented with ascites. Cor triatriatum dexter (CTD) without any other concurrent cardiovascular anomalies was diagnosed using echocardiography. The ostium of the abnormal membrane dividing the right atrium into two abnormal chambers was surgically excised under cardiopulmonary bypass. All clinical abnormalities were resolved after surgery. However, seven months later, ascites and CTD recurred. A balloon-expandable stent was placed at the site of recurrence, which improved caudal venous return to the right ventricle. After the second

A 17-week-old, 2.7-kg cat was presented for management of congestive heart failure due to cor triatriatum sinister. Despite aggressive management for congestive heart failure with escalating diuretic doses, the cat remained symptomatic with exercise intolerance and dyspnea. Percutaneous transseptal balloon dilatation was scheduled. Computed tomography was performed prior to the procedure to aid in planning, which confirmed echocardiographic findings and excluded concurrent congenital defects. A transseptal puncture was performed under general anesthesia, and the cor triatriatum sinister membra

An adult male castrated French bulldog mix was presented for suspected caval syndrome and bilateral pelvic limb paresis. After emergency transjugular heartworm extraction, abdominal ultrasound revealed occlusive adult heartworms in the abdominal aorta extending into the pelvic limb arteries. Hybrid interventional and surgical extraction was pursued, and heartworms were removed via bilateral femoral arteriotomy and caudal abdominal aortotomy. Ectopic dirofilariasis involving the aorta and pelvic limb arteries is rarely reported; therefore, the underlying mechanism, incidence, and treatment of a
