Alterations in viscera histoarchitecture and organosomatic index as biomarkers of toxicity induced by Aba-Eku and Olusosun solid waste landfill leachates in Rattus norvegicus.

Solid waste disposal generates leachate, a mixture of deleterious chemical, physical and microbial contaminants, which poses risk to human and wildlife health. Leachate toxicity on relative organ weight and histopathology of important viscera in mammalian body is scarce. Leachate induced toxic effects on organosomatic indices and histopathology of vital mammalian organs were investigated. Wister rats were orally exposed to 1 - 25 % of raw and simulated leachates from Aba-Eku and Olusosun landfills for 30 days. At post-exposure, organosomatic index and histoarchitectural assessment of major vis…

Experimental, Grand canonical Monte Carlo, and Density Functional Theory studies for comparing halloysite and kaolinite on heavy metals fate during pyrolysis of solid waste.

In this study, we utilized low-cost halloysite (Hal) for the first time to enhance the solid-phase enrichment and stability of heavy metals (HMs) during solid waste pyrolysis through experimental and theoretical methods, and compared with kaolinite (Kao). Experimental results demonstrated that Hal was superior to Kao in improving the solid-phase enrichment of HMs. Specifically, the solid-phase enrichment of Cd increased by 32.6 % (500 °C) and 25.94 % (600 °C), while that of Pb and Zn increased by 17.37 %/16.83 % and 19.82 %/22.37 % (700/800 °C), respectively. Adding Hal reduced the proportion …

Application of solid waste of ductile cast iron industry for treatment of wastewater contaminated by reactive blue dye via appropriate nano-porous magnesium oxide.

The solid waste of ductile iron industry, which contains at least 88.0% magnesium oxide, is one of the toxic materials, leading to land contamination. On the other hand, the removal of reactive dyes from wastewaters is difficult required effective adsorbent like nano-porous MgO. The novelty of present investigation is based on nano-porous magnesium oxide production by precipitation from the solid waste to treat the wastewaters contaminated by reactive dye which is abundantly used in the textile industry. In order to improve the adsorptive properties of extracted MgO powder, the combinations of…

Associations between oxidative stress levels and total duration of engagement in jobs with exposure to fly ash among workers at municipal solid waste incinerators.

The fly ash from municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) is known to contain heavy metals, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and other organic materials. Heavy metals, PCDDs, PCDFs and PAHs reportedly cause oxidative stress in vitro and in vivo. In this study, we have measured the blood and urinary levels of several oxidative stress markers in MSWI workers and discuss herein whether the duration of engagement in jobs with exposure to MSWI fly ash is associated with these levels. The subjects were 81 male worke…

Boosting performance and unraveling DIET induction in food waste anaerobic digestion: The role of ethanol pre-fermentation across solids loading gradients.

Food waste anaerobic digestion is susceptible to acidification, and its treatment process encompasses a wide concentration range, from wet to dry. To investigate the enhancement efficiency and mechanism of ethanol pre-fermentation (EP) at varying total solids (TS) concentrations, this study systematically compared its performance in wet (TS 5%), semi-dry (TS 15%), and dry (TS 20%) systems. The results indicate that the enhancement efficiency and mechanism of EP are highly dependent on the TS concentration. In the semi-dry system with TS 15%, EP significantly increased methane production by 151

Effect of recycled phosphogypsum and calcium aluminate cement on the strength behavior optimization of cement-treated dredged soil: A co-utilization of solid wastes.

Dredged soil and phosphogypsum (PG) are waste materials that must be treated to reduce their negative environmental effects. Guided by the concept of waste treatment, this study proposed the use of PG as a supplementary cementitious material to stabilize waste-dredged soil, and calcium aluminate cement (CAC) was selected to further improve the strength of the cement-treated dredged soil. Several laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the pH, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), and failure strain of the cement-treated soils in different proportions. Microstructural and mineralogical

Gas-pressurized torrefaction for multi-source organic solid wastes: An ML-based synergistic optimization of dechlorination and energy recovery with mechanistic insights.

Dechlorination pretreatment is required for the energy recovery of chlorine-containing multi-source organic solid wastes (MSW). Gas-pressurized torrefaction (GP) enables efficient dechlorination and MSW upgrading at low temperatures, yet high dechlorination efficiency (DCE) often comes at the expense of char yield (CY), creating a persistent dilemma between chlorine removal and energy recovery. In this study, LSBT models were developed to jointly predict DCE and CY using feedstock properties and torrefaction variables. The final models achieved test-set R2 values of 0.94 for DCE and 0.96 for C…

Towards circular economy: Sustainable valorization of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash for recovery of high-purity chlorides and calcium, and separation of heavy metals.

Incineration is an effective method for handling the increasing volume of municipal solid waste, but the resulting fly ash presents a significant problem that needs to be addressed. Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA) contains toxic and hazardous substances, including heavy metals, dioxins, and chlorides, and is classified as hazardous waste. This paper analyzes the current situation of MSWI FA and summarizes the main treatment methods, including solidification/stabilization, thermal treatment, and chemical separation/resource recovery. The review critically evaluates research…

A participatory geographic information system-based route optimisation for decentralised municipal solid waste management system: A case study from a flood-prone town in Kerala, India.

Municipal solid waste management (MSWM) remains a critical challenge in India due to rapid urbanisation, increasing waste volumes, and limited institutional capacity. Although urban local bodies (ULBs) allocate up to 80% of their MSWM budgets to collection and transport, inefficiencies persist due to unoptimised routes and poor alignment with local conditions. Most geographic information system (GIS)-based optimisation models remain top-down, failing to reflect on-the-ground realities and are rarely implementable. This study presents a participatory GIS-based routing methodology for decentrali…

Ecofriendly and biocompatible biochars derived from waste-branches for direct and efficient solid-phase extraction of benzodiazepines in crude urine sample prior to LC-MS/MS.

Biochars (BCs) derived from waste-branches of apple tree, grape tree, and oak were developed for direct solid-phase extraction (SPE) of five benzodiazepines (BZDs) in crude urine samples prior to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) determination. Scanning electron microscopy, elemental analyzer, X-ray diffractometry, N2 adsorption/desorption experiments, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry characterizations revealed the existence of their mesoporous structure and numerous oxygen-containing functional groups. The obtained BCs not only possessed high affinity toward

Removal of traces of highly explosive trinitrotoluene from TNT red water by using graphene nanocomposites prepared from solid wastes: an example of circular economy.

The defence munition is primarily composed of high-intensity explosive chemicals such as trinitrotoluene (TNT) and the manufacturing of TNT generates highly intense red-colored effluents consisting of TNT and its derivatives, sulfonates, and nitrobenzene. As of date, there is no comprehensive treatment for TNT red water. In this study, we propose to treat TNT from red water using different graphene nanocomposites, i.e., GN-G and GN-S, synthesized from graphite and sludge, respectively. The sludge used in the preparation of GN-S was obtained from the chemical coagulation of TNT red water using

Investigation of biogeochemical controls on the formation, uptake and accumulation of methylmercury in rice paddies in the vicinity of a coal-fired power plant and a municipal solid waste incinerator in Taiwan.

Recent studies have shown that rice consumption is another critical route of human exposure to methylmercury (MeHg), the most toxic and accumulative form of mercury (Hg) in the food web. Yet, the mechanisms that underlie the production and accumulation of MeHg in the paddy ecosystem are still poorly understood. In 2013 and 2014, we conducted field campaigns and laboratory experiments over a rice growing season to examine Hg and MeHg cycling, as well as associated biogeochemistry in a suite of paddies close to a municipal solid waste incinerator and a coal-fired power plant station in Taiwan. C…

Removal and recovery of mercury(II) from hazardous wastes using 1-(2-thiazolylazo)-2-naphthol functionalized activated carbon as solid phase extractant.

As a part of removal of toxic heavy metals from hazardous wastes, solid phase extraction (SPE) of mercury(II) at trace and ultra trace levels was studied using 1-(2-thiazolylazo)-2-naphthol (TAN) functionalized activated carbon (AC). The SPE material removes traces of mercury(II) quantitatively in the pH range 6.0 +/- 0.2. Other parameters that influence quantitative recovery of mercury(II), viz. percent concentration of TAN in AC, amount of TAN-AC, preconcentration time and volume of aqueous phase were varied and optimized.
