Mental disorders and total mortality after 20 years in an adult general population sample.

BACKGROUND: General population data on associations between mental disorders and total mortality are rare. The aim was to analyze whether the number of mental disorders, single substance use, mood, anxiety, somatoform or eating disorders during the lifetime and whether treatment utilization may predict time to death 20 years later in the general adult population. METHODS: We used data from the Composite International Diagnostic Interview, which includes DSM-IV diagnoses for substance use, mood, anxiety, somatoform, and eating disorders, for a sample of 4,075 residents in Germany who were 18-6

The somatic patient.

A significant proportion of patients seen in the Emergency Department will present with somatic complaints for which there is no apparent physiologic cause. Such patients may be divided into two broad categories: (1) those with symptoms and signs consciously synthesized by the patient, either for obvious secondary gain (malingering) or as a result of more subtle and complex motivations (factitious disorders); and (2) those patients with symptoms that are the unconscious expression of psychological stress (somatoform disorders). The somatoform disorders include (1) somatization disorder (charac…

Opipramol was developed in the 1960s as an antidepressant and has chemical similarities with tricyclic antidepressants. Pharmacodynamic prop … rse events are the predominant side effects. In Germany, opipramol is approved for the treatment of somatoform disorders and generalized anxiety disorder, and there is sufficient evidence for the efficacy of opipramol in these disorders. The agent is still prescribed very often in Germany, yet plays a minor role in the clinical as well as scientific setting. In view o …

Axis I diagnostic comorbidity and borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (PD) has been the most studied PD. Research has examined the relationship between borderline PD and most axis I diagnostic classes such as eating disorders, mood disorders, and substance use disorders. However, there is little information regarding the relationship of borderline PD and overall comorbidity with all classes of axis I disorders assessed simultaneously. In the present study, 409 patients were evaluated with semistructured diagnostic interviews for axis I and axis II disorders. Patients with a diagnosis of borderline PD versus those who did not recei

A total of 505 elderly patients aged 65 and over, seen at the Department of Psychiatry of Tosei General Hospital, were investigated retrospectively and classified according to the DSM-III-R criteria. [Current aspects of tinnitus and depression].

Health authorities underestimate the negative influence of emotional factors such as depression, anxiety disorders, or somatoform disorders in the development of tinnitus and their contribution to a poor prognosis. This can lead to underestimation of the impairment suffered by tinnitus patients and, consequently, a possibly incorrect treatment approach or belated initiation of therapy. Mental disorders play a large role in the S3AWMF "Tinnitus" guidelines. Thus, the somatic and psychiatric approaches for treatment of chronic tinnitus patients are combined. Starting with taking chronic tinnitus…

[Personality and somatic disorders].

In the title of this text, by somatic disorders we mean those physical illnesses clearly related to a non-psychiatric medical field, frequently termed psychosomatic illnesses and somatoform disorders. For forty years, a trend of thought has focused with pertinence on the psychological peculiarities in patients with severe somatic diseases. Moreover, causality was often supposed in the regularly mentioned association between personality features and somatoform disorders. However, the revival of the study of the earlier field of relationships between mind and body by Briquet, Charcot, Janet and …

Relation among personality and symptoms in nonulcer dyspepsia and the irritable bowel syndrome.

The importance of personality traits in nonulcer dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome is a controversial issue. We wished to assess the distribution of abnormal personality traits in nonulcer dyspepsia and the irritable bowel syndrome, define any relation among personality and symptoms, and determine whether personality factors discriminate among patients with functional, psychiatric, or organic gastrointestinal diseases. Patients with nonulcer dyspepsia (n = 31), irritable bowel syndrome (n = 67), organic gastrointestinal disease (n = 64), somatoform disorder (n = 36) and healthy controls (
