Physiological and Anatomical Outputs of Rat Genital Cortex.

Rat somatosensory genital cortex contains a large sexually monomorphic representation of the penis in males and the clitoris in females. Gen … l surface and most were analog to other somatosensory projections targeting motor cortex, secondary somatosensory cortex, parietal cortex and perirhinal cortex. Corticocortical projections that differed from other parts of somatosensory cortex targeted male scrotum cortex, female vulva cortex, the somatosensory-ear-auditory-cortex-region and the caudal parietal area. …

Somatosensory and pain responses to stimulation of the second somatosensory area (SII) in humans. A comparison with SI and insular responses.

Somatosensory and pain responses to direct intracerebral stimulations of the SII area were obtained in 14 patients referred for epilepsy surgery. Stimulations were delivered using transopercular electrodes exploring the parietal opercular cortex (SII area), the suprasylvian parietal cortex (SI area) and the insular cortex. SII responses were compared to those from adjacent SI and insular cortex. In the three areas we elicited mostly somatosensory responses, including paresthesiae, temperature and pain sensations. The rate of painful sensations (10%) was similar in SII and in the insula, while

A parahippocampal-sensory Bayesian vicious circle generates pain or tinnitus: a source-localized EEG study.

Pain and tinnitus share common pathophysiological mechanisms, clinical features, and treatment approaches. A source-localized resting-state … al cortex and medial anterior temporal lobe. Gamma-band activity was increased in both auditory and somatosensory cortex, irrespective of the pathology, and extended to the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and parahippocampus. Functional and effective connectivity were largely similar in pain and tinnitus, except for a parahippocampal-sensory loop that distinguished p …

Cortical maps of somatosensory perception in human.

Tactile and movement-related somatosensory perceptions are crucial for our daily lives and survival. Although the primary somatosensory cortex is thought to be the key structure of somatosensory perception, various cortical downstream areas are also involved in somatosensory perceptual processing. However, little is known about whether cortical networks of these downstream areas can be dissociated depending on each perception, especially in human. We address this issue by combining data from direct cortical stimulation (DCS) for eliciting somatosensation and data from high-gamma band (HG) elic…

Somatosensory evoked potentials following lesions of the claustrum.

Ipsi- and contralateral cortical somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) were recorded following median nerve stimulation in 12 patients with unilateral brain lesions and in 5 healthy subjects. Computed tomographic scans of brain were performed on admission. In all patients with lesions of the claustrum there was absence of SEP contralateral to the side of the lesion and ipsilateral to the stimulated nerve. This phenomenon did not appear in our material following lesions involving other structures e.g. thalamus or somatosensory cortex. Our observations suggest that the claustrum may influence de…

Deficits in Behavioral Functions of Intact Barrel Cortex Following Lesions of Homotopic Contralateral Cortex.

Focal unilateral injuries to the somatosensory whisker barrel cortex have been shown cause long-lasting deficits in the activity and experience-dependent plasticity of neurons in the intact contralateral barrel cortex. However, the long-term effect of these deficits on behavioral functions of the intact contralesional cortex is not clear. In this study, we used the "Gap-crossing task" a barrel cortex-dependent, whisker-sensitive, tactile behavior to test the hypothesis that unilateral lesions of the somatosensory cortex would affect behavioral functions of the intact somatosensory cortex and d…

Cortical reorganization after macroreplantation at the upper extremity: a magnetoencephalographic study.

With the development of microsurgical techniques, replantation has become a feasible alternative to stump treatment after the amputation of an extremity. It is known that amputation often induces phantom limb pain and cortical reorganization within the corresponding somatosensory areas. However, whether replantation reduces the risk of comparable persisting pain phenomena as well as reorganization of the primary somatosensory cortex is still widely unknown. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the potential development of persistent pain and cortical reorganization of the hand and…

Somatosensory areas containing topographic maps of the body surface are a major feature of parietal cortex. In primates, parietal cortex con … more overlapping than suggested by textbook depictions of map topography. The whisker map in rodent somatosensory cortex is a canonic system for studying cortical microcircuits, sensory coding, and map plasticity. Somatosensory maps are plastic throughout life in response to altered use or injury. This chapter reviews basic principles and recent findings in primate, h …

Posterior parietal cortex.

The posterior parietal cortex, along with temporal and prefrontal cortices, is one of the three major associative regions in the cortex of the mammalian brain. It is situated between the visual cortex at the caudal pole of the brain and the somatosensory cortex just behind the central sulcus. Technically, any cortex covered by the parietal bone is referred to as 'parietal cortex', but the posterior sector, formally referred to as posterior parietal cortex, is indeed its own functional section of cortex, consisting of Brodmann's areas 5, 7, 39, and 40 in humans, areas 5 and 7 in macaques, and a…

Modulation of rodent cortical motor excitability by somatosensory input.

It is assumed that somatosensory input is required for motor learning and recovery from focal brain injury. In rodents and other mammals, corticocortical projections between somatosensory and motor cortices are modified by patterned input. Whether and how motor cortex function is modulated by somatosensory input to support motor learning is largely unknown. Recent human evidence suggests that input changes motor excitability. Using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), this study tested whether motor cortex excitability is affected by patterned somatosensory stimulation in rodents. Motor po

Impaired secondary somatosensory gating in patients with schizophrenia.

A large and growing literature has demonstrated a deficit in auditory gating in patients with schizophrenia. Although that deficit has been … nia. However, a significant decrease in cortical thickness and gray matter volume loss in secondary somatosensory cortex has recently been reported, suggesting this as a focus for impaired somatosensory gating. Thus, the current study was designed (1) to replicate previous work showing a lack of schizophrenia deficit in primary somatosensory cortex (SI) gating, and (2 …

The absence of cortical responses in the patient with holoprosencephaly may correspond with growth failure of the thalamocortical afferent projections in this disorder.

Preserved cortical somatotopic and motor representations in tetraplegic humans.

A rich literature has documented changes in cortical representations of the body in somatosensory and motor cortex. Recent clinical studies of brain-machine interfaces designed to assist paralyzed patients have afforded the opportunity to record from and stimulate human somatosensory, motor, and action-related areas of the posterior parietal cortex. These studies show considerable preserved structure in the cortical somato-motor system. Motor cortex can immediately control assistive devices, stimulation of somatosensory cortex produces sensations in an orderly somatotopic map, and the posterio…

Identification of the somatosensory parietal ventral area and overlap of the somatosensory and auditory cortices in mice.

This study aimed to identify the parietal ventral (PV) area of the somatosensory cortex in mice and to determine whether auditory cortex and somatosensory cortex overlap. Using high resolution, voltage-sensitive dye-based imaging, we identified the PV area, which exhibited strong responses to stimulation of distal body parts but weak responses to stimulation of proximal and facial body parts. We further demonstrated a substantial overlap between the auditory and non-primary somatosensory areas, including the PV area. We found statistically significant non-additive integration of auditory and s…

Interaction of visceral and somatic afferent systems in the cerebral cortex.

Using the method of evoked potentials on chloralose-anesthetized and suxamethonium-immobilized cats, a comparative study was made of the effects of interaction of somatic and visceral afferent systems in the second somatosensory area and in the parietal cortex of the brain. It was found that a common property of the interaction of the two afferent systems is an inhibition of the second response irrespective of which of the systems is activated first. Fairly prolonged inhibition was noted in the association region of the parietal cortex. Preliminary stimulation of visceral nerves caused less pr

Neuronal TrkB supports adult cortical oligodendrogenesis in the brains of older adult mice.

Lifelong oligodendrogenesis and myelination is critical for healthy brain aging. Using cumulative labelling with thymidine analogue, 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU) for 6-weeks commencing at 2-, 12- and 18-months of age in C57BL/6 mice, we found that oligodendrocyte progenitor cell (OPC) proliferation and oligodendroglial densities are relatively stable in the adult mouse optic nerve, corpus callosum and somatosensory cortex. We also found that more proliferative adult OPCs differentiate into oligodendrocytes in the somatosensory cortex than the corpus callosum during aging. To determine the r…

Effect of prenatal valproic acid exposure on cortical morphology in female mice.

We have recently shown that prenatal valproic acid (VPA) exposure causes autism spectrum disorders-like behavioral abnormalities and Nissl-positive cell loss in both prefrontal and somatosensory cortices in male mice. We have also found that VPA-induced social interaction deficits are observed in male but not female offspring. This study demonstrated that the exposure to VPA at embryonic day 12.5 significantly decreased Nissl-positive cell numbers in the prefrontal cortex, but not in the somatosensory cortex, in female offspring. These findings suggest that VPA-induced morphological abnormalit…

Expression of synaptic proteins and development of dendritic spines in fetal and postnatal neocortex of the pig, the European wild boar Sus scrofa.

Synapse formation is a critical step in neuronal development. Current knowledge is largely based on altricial rodents where synapse formation and maturation proceed largely postnatally. In precocially born mammals such as guinea pig presynapse and spine formation start well before birth. Here, we analysed the developmental expression of proteins associated with synapse formation and maturation together with the development of basal dendritic spines of pyramidal neurons of visual and somatosensory cortex of the pig, an emerging translational model for human neurodegenerative disorders. A total …
