We present resonant two-photon ionization and IR-UV double resonance spectra of methylated xanthine derivatives including 7-methylxanthine dimer and theobromine dimer seeded in a supersonic jet by laser desorption. For 7-methylxanthine, theophylline and theobromine monomer we assign the lowest energy tautomer based on comparison with IR-UV double resonance spectra and calculated IR frequencies. In this paper, we compared atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV), and UV-vis spectroscopy for the determination of the concentration of CdSe nanocrystal (NC) solutions. The experimental results were combined with crystallographic calculations of the NC size, which led to a very accurate determination of the nanocrystal concentration--a crucial parameter for bioanalytical applications. Furthermore, such a combined approach can be extended to the determination of shell thickness of core/shell materials (e.g., CdSe/ZnS).

Serum zinc and copper levels were determined in 28 beta-thalassaemia and 15 sickle cell anaemia (SCA) patients of 3-10 years of age using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results were compared with 25 age-matched controls. Copper levels were significantly increased in beta-thalassaemia and sickle cell anaemia. Zinc levels were significantly increased in beta-thalassaemia but significantly decreased in SCA. The data suggest the occurrence of impaired kidney function and disturbance in the metabolism of zinc and copper in these patients.

A patient with bronchial asthma was scheduled for an operation under nitrous oxide-isoflurane anesthesia. We monitored isoflurane concentrations continuously using an anesthetic gas analyzer (BK 1304). Upon puffing procaterol hydrochloride aerosol for 4 times, the analyzer showed a rapid increase in end-tidal isoflurane concentration. The BK 1304 uses infrared photoacoustic spectrophotometry and it is susceptible to interferences caused by Freon propellants in bronchodilator aerosols. We should take care in monitoring inhalational anesthetics when using aerosols containing Freon propellants.

An easy procedure for preparing microspheres containing CdSe/CdS core-shell quantum dots (QDs) was demonstrated. 1. A procedure for the routine assay of Naproxen in serum by ultraviolet spectrophotometry is presented. The absorption coefficient (A1 1% cm) of Naproxen in methanol at 261 nm was found to be 216. 2. The Naproxen procedure appears to be relatively free from interferences of commonly coadministered medications. Salicylate interference is eliminated by a modified procedure. 3. Concentrations of Naproxen in a limited number (40) of clinical samples ranged from non-detected to 12.5 mg/dl. The therapeutic concentration appears to be 4 to 6 mg/dl (174-260 mumol/L).

"Kumkums" are coloured cosmetics frequently applied to the center of the forehead by Hindu women. Pigmented allergic contact dermatitis to "kumkum" was reported recently. It was associated with Brilliant Lake Red R and Sudan I allergy. These might be the causative allergens. Three of 7 brands of red "kumkums" analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrophotometry were found to contain various concentrations of Sudan I. They ranged from 2.789 mg/gm to 8.694 mg/gm. Sudan I is probably the cause of pigmented allergic contact dermatitis in red "kumkum".

A retinoid was isolated by a multistep procedure from the small intestines of vitamin A-deficient rats given a single dose of retinoic acid. The compound, designated 8II, was pure, as demonstrated by four high-pressure liquid chromatographic procedures. It was positively identified as 5,8-oxyretinoic acid by ultraviolet spectrophotometry, mass spectrometry, and spectral and chromatographic comparison to known compounds. The red blood cell and serum zinc levels have been determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry on 27 human subjects in apparent good state of health, tested monthly for five months successively. The subjects who present a decreased frequency of the E.E.G. pattern during hyperventilation, also show a diminished red blood cell Zn level, by comparison with the other subjects. This phenomenon suggests a possible relationship between red blood cell zinc concentration and E.E.G. signs of cortical hyperexcitability. These findings are discussed in the light of the recent literature.

The total urinary estrogen values of women with glucosuria were studied by 5 different methods in 287 samples. The spectrophotometry values obtained by Ittrich's reaction have been influenced by urinary glucose concentrations. An increased glucose content appeared to be connected with a decrease of the hormone values if the hydrolysis of conjugates was performed by mineral acids. The chemical synthesis of [3alpha-3H]vitamin D2 of high specific activity has been described. With the use of this radioactive material, the existence of a polar metabolite believed to be the active form of vitamin D2 in the rat and chick has been demonstrated. It has been isolated in pure form from an in vitro chick kidney mitochondrial system and identified as 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D2 by means of mass spectrometry, ultraviolet absorption spectrophotometry, and specific derivative synthesis. Its antirachitic activity equals that of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 in the rat.
