OBJECTIVES: The present study focuses on the possibilities and effects of training dyslexic children in tone and phoneme discrimination tasks.
METHODS: A computer program was developed to train dyslexic children to discriminate between tone and speech stimuli. The correlation between auditory discrimination and reading and orthography performance was then tested in a preliminary study of n = 63 children. In a prospective study 44 children were assigned to one of three paralyzed groups: tone training, phoneme training or a control group. Upon completion of the initial diagnostics for all group

BACKGROUND: Eclectic test combinations are usually applied for diagnosing (Central) Auditory Processing Disorders (C)APD in school-aged children.
METHODS: Children with suspected APD were examined with a combination of 12 audiological and psychometric tests in order to allow the proper allocation to either the APD-group or to the Non-APD-group.
PATIENTS: Forty-six 8-10-year-old children diagnosed with auditory-specific perceptual deficits [clinical group (C)APD; average age 9;2 years; SD 0;7 years] were compared to 39 normally developed children of the same age span with no evidence of speci

The auditory function of individuals with normal hearing was compared with that of hearing-aided subjects of similar age to determine whether amplification remediates hearing impairment under stressful auditory situations. The specific tests of listening in a competitive noise environment and identifying moderately compressed speech were introduced to adequately aided individuals. The data indicate that noise had an impact on auditory function to a much greater degree in aided individuals than in matched counterparts with normal hearing. The data derived from acceleration of simple sentences d

This experiment assessed the benefits of suppression and the impact of reduced or absent suppression on speech recognition in noise. Psychophysical suppression was measured in forward masking using tonal maskers and suppressors and band limited noise maskers and suppressors. Subjects were 10 younger and 10 older adults with normal hearing, and 10 older adults with cochlear hearing loss. For younger subjects with normal hearing, suppression measured with noise maskers increased with masker level and was larger at 2.0 kHz than at 0.8 kHz. Less suppression was observed for older than younger subj

The present study examined the extent to which verbal auditory agnosia (VAA) is primarily a phonemic decoding disorder, as contrasted to a more global defect in acoustic processing. Subjects were six young adults who presented with VAA in childhood and who, at the time of testing, showed varying degrees of residual auditory discrimination impairment. They were compared to a group of young adults with normal language development matched for age and gender. Cortical event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded to tones and to consonant-vowel stimuli presented in an "oddball" discrimination para

Pure tone audiometry and speech audiometry were performed in 30 normal-hearing listeners and 75 listeners suffering from conductive, sensorineural hearing loss or presbyacusia. The results were as follows: (1) For listeners with conductive or mild sensorineural hearing loss, or with mild presbyacusia, the difference between speech reception thresholds (SRT) and pure tone averages (PTA) was not significant (P > 0.05). (2) For listeners with profound sensorineural hearing loss or presbyacusia, the SRT were about 10 dB greater than the PTA. (3) The maximum discrimination score (PBXax) measurement

OBJECTIVE: Unilateral hearing loss causes difficulty hearing in noise (the "cocktail party effect") due to absence of redundancy, head-shadow, and binaural squelch. This study explores the emergence of the head-shadow and binaural squelch effects in children with unilateral congenital aural atresia undergoing surgery to correct their hearing deficit. Adding patients and data from a similar study previously published, we also evaluate covariates such as the age of the patient, surgical outcome, and complexity of the task that might predict the extent of binaural benefit--patients' ability to "u

Six adults with a very steeply sloping high-frequency hearing loss listened to monosyllabic words in several conditions. In the first condition, their ability to identify phonemes with a signal-to-noise ratio of 6 dB was measured. Results were similar to those of normally hearing subjects listening to the same material through low-pass filters having comparable cut-off frequencies. In the remaining two conditions, four of the hearing-impaired subjects, and a control group of five normally hearing subjects, listened to speech in quiet with and without frequency transposition. The transposition

The mismatch negativity (MMN) is an automatic cortical evoked potential that signifies the brain's detection of acoustic change. In other words, the MMN reflects the neurophysiologic processes that underlie auditory discrimination. As such, the MMN provides an objective tool for evaluating central auditory mechanisms involved in speech perception. We are using the MMN to study the central auditory processes that encode acoustic changes important for speech perception in 1) normal-hearing adults and children, 2) individuals with impaired auditory systems (including persons with learning disabil

The masking of speech by amplitude-modulated and unmodulated speech-spectrum noise has been evaluated by the measurement of monaural speech recognition in such noise on young and elderly subjects with normal-hearing and elderly hearing-impaired subjects with and without a hearing aid. Sinusoidal modulation with frequencies covering the range 2-100 Hz, as well as an irregular modulation generated by the sum of four sinusoids in random phase relation, was used. Modulation degrees were 100%, +/- 6 dB, and +/- 12 dB. Root mean-square sound pressure level was equal for modulated and unmodulated mas

A Danish Four Alternative Forced Choice (4AFC) test was presented to normal-hearing and cochlearly hearing-impaired listeners in two background noises: a modulated, speech-spectrum-shaped noise and an 8-persons babble noise. At the presentation to the hearing-impaired subjects the test signals were given a frequency-dependent amplification in accordance with the POGO-fitting method. Normative data are presented which indicate that 4AFC is a valid test in spite of lack of homogeneity between the alternatives allowed. On the other hand, a learning effect is demonstrated which affects the reliabi

We assessed the types of speech errors made in relation to the acoustic reflex. Ten subjects with unilateral stapedectomies were presented with consonant-vowel nonsense syllables in low pass noise at 70, 95, and 110 dB SPL in each ear. Hearing sensitivity for all subjects was normal or near-normal bilaterally. In the operated ear, speech intelligibility was significantly poorer than in the unoperated ear at all intensity levels. A distinctive feature analysis supported this finding. The data suggest that word discrimination testing in quiet does not adequately reveal the success of stapedectom

Late-onset auditory deprivation or "inactivity" phenomenon has been reported in single cases only because it has not been possible to assemble a larger number of calculable cohorts for which all necessary details concerning individual histories are available. Subjects should not be older than 60 years of age and should have had asymmetric hearing for at least about 10 years or should have been wearers of monaurally fitted hearing aids. The development of late-onset auditory deprivation is presented in 6 single cases. All were assessed by the Freiburg speech discrimination test and the distorte

OBJECTIVE: Hearing loss is increasingly recognized as a chronic disease state with important health sequelae. Although considered a central component of routine audiometric testing, the degree to which various patient factors influence speech discrimination is poorly characterized to date. The primary objective of the current work was to describe associations of cognitive performance, sociodemographic factors, and pure-tone audiometry with speech discrimination in older adults.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study.
SETTING: Olmsted County, Minnesota.
PATIENTS: There were 1,061 study participants
