Treating Childhood Speech Sound Disorders: Current Approaches to Management by Australian Speech-Language Pathologists.

Purpose This study explored the intervention processes used by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to treat children with speech sound disorders (SSDs). Method Semistructured, individual, in-depth interviews were conducted with 11 Australian SLPs. Inductive content analysis was used to classify the data to provide a description of current intervention processes for children with SSDs. Results Three main factors were identified relating to the intervention processes used by SLPs: (a) target selection, (b) therapy approaches, and (c) structural and procedural aspects of therapy sessions, includi

Considerations for Using Academically Integrated Therapy Materials to Increase Collaboration and Support Varied Service Delivery for Treating Speech Sound Disorders in Schools.

BACKGROUND: School-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play a critical role in minimizing the negative educational impact of their students' speech sound disorders (SSDs). Current studies on SSDs in children are rich with discussions of therapy- and child-level contributions to gains in speech sound production. However, while many studies have supported using curricular content during language interventions, there is little theoretical and no empirical evidence to demonstrate that using academically integrated therapy materials during intervention provides a positive educational impact f

Factor analysis of signs of childhood apraxia of speech.

PURPOSE: To investigate the latent factors underlying signs of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) in a group of 57 children with CAS. METHOD: The speech of 57 children with CAS (aged 3;5-17;0) was coded for signs of CAS. All participants showed at least five signs of CAS and were judged to have CAS by speech pathologists experienced in pediatric speech disorders. Participants were selected to represent a range of severity of CAS: 30 children were verbal and 27 were minimally verbal with comorbid autism. Participants' scores for each sign (the number of times that sign appeared during a child's

Perspectives of speech-language pathologists on the use of telepractice in schools: quantitative survey results.

This research surveyed 170 school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in one northeastern state, with only 1.8% reporting telepractice use in school-settings. These results were consistent with two ASHA surveys (2002; 2011) that reported limited use of telepractice for school-based speech-language pathology. In the present study, willingness to use telepractice was inversely related to age, perhaps because younger members of the profession are more accustomed to using technology. Overall, respondents were concerned about the validity of assessments administered via telepractice; whether …

Pushing the Limits on Learning Gender-Affirming Voice: An Autoethnography From a Client.

Gender-affirming voice work differs fundamentally from other speech-language pathology work. Rather than addressing pathology in communication, gender-affirming voice work teaches clients how to change behavior, which is limited in part by how gender-diverse people interact with their social environment. Integrating my original theory of gender with my personal experience learning gender-affirming voice, I explain possible obstacles gender-diverse people face as well as recommendations to speech-language pathologists to mitigate them. In particular, gender-diverse people may exhibit difficulti…

Adherence to eating and drinking guidelines for adults with intellectual disabilities and dysphagia.

The extent to which 40 individuals with intellectual disabilities and dysphagia and their caregivers adhered to speech and language pathology dysphagia guidelines was evaluated. These individuals were observed having a meal across four settings. In addition to monitoring overall adherence, guidelines were split into separate sections corresponding to consistency modification of food and drinks, physical positioning, use of equipment and utensils, and support and prompting recommendations. Adherence to speech and language pathology recommendations was generally high, particularly regarding cons

"They Can't Believe They're a Tiger": Insights from pediatric speech-language pathologist mobile app users and app designers.

BACKGROUND: Children with communication disorders experience difficulty in one or more areas of articulation and speech, language, fluency, voice and social communication, and they work with speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to improve their communication. With the rise of adoption and use for mobile applications among special education and healthcare service providers, SLPs also have implemented, and for some, contributed to the design of, mobile applications (apps) during clinical practice. However, how these mobile apps are designed and implemented for clinicians to facilitate their clien

A Survey of Speech-Language Pathologists' Applications of Motor Learning Principles in Dysphagia Therapy in Adults in India.

PURPOSE: In the study, we investigated whether speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in India use practice and feedback conditions of motor learning principles (MLPs), including biofeedback, in dysphagia therapy in adults using a problem-solution approach. METHOD: Based on a literature review and clinical experience, we developed and validated a hypothetical case involving an adult with dysphagia (representing the problem) and a purpose-built 22-item questionnaire (representing the solution). We distributed the questionnaire electronically by sending an e-mail to 2,069 SLPs and also published a

Clinical Feeding and Swallowing Evaluation for the School-Based Speech-Language Pathologist.

PURPOSE: From preschool through high school, eating is part of the school day. Children with feeding and/or swallowing issues are now in our neighborhood schools, our responsibility in our care, and require adequate nutrition and hydration to participate in school and access the curriculum. The whole child is in school, including all of their medical, behavioral, social, and educational needs. This clinical focus article describes a holistic process of evaluating swallowing and feeding in the school setting for the school speech-language pathologist (SLP) leading the team supporting the child.

Speech-Language pathologists' decisions when designing an aided AAC display for a compilation case study of a beginning communicator.

PURPOSE: The current study sought to identify decisions speech-language pathologists (SLPs) make and their rationale for those decisions when designing an AAC display for a hypothetical school-aged child who was a beginning communicator. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) displays support communicative interactions for children who are unable to use spoken language to meet their communication needs. Children who are at the early stages of learning language, often termed beginning or emerging communicators, may rely heavily on the AAC display to support comprehension and expressio

Horns, whistles, bite blocks, and straws: a review of tools/objects used in articulation therapy by Van Riper and other traditional therapists.

The use of tools and other objects in articulation therapy has been bundled into new groups of activities called "nonspeech oral motor exercises" (NSOME) and 'nonspeech oral motor treatments' (NSOMT) by some authors. The purveyors of these new terms suggest that there is no proof that such objects aid speech learning, and they have cautioned students and professionals about their use. Speech-language pathologists are trying to reconcile these cautions with basic Van Riper type therapy routines. The purpose of this literature review was to summarize the ways in which tools/objects were used by

Pathophysiology of language, speech and emotions in neurodegenerative disease.

Studying neurodegenerative diseases has greatly expanded our knowledge of language, speech and emotion as these diseases can affect areas not typically seen with stroke or tumor. Newer imaging techniques such as voxel based morphometry), fluorodeoxyglucose (F18) positron emission tomography and functional magnetic resonance imaging have allowed localization of these deficits and a greater understanding of the language network targeted by these progressive neurodegenerative illnesses. This review illustrates these important points by describing five syndromes, using clinical cases and then noti
