Vertebral fracture (VF) is a common condition with >160,000 patients affected every year in North America and most of them with affected lumbar vertebrae. The management of VF is well known and defined by many protocols related to associated clinical neurological symptoms, especially in case of the presence or absence of myelopathy or radicular deficit. In this article, we will explore the percutaneous stabilization of the lumbar spine by showing the newest approaches for this condition.

Hyperkyphosis is a common spinal disorder in older adults, characterized by excessive forward curvature of the thoracic spine and adverse health outcomes. The etiology of hyperkyphosis has not been firmly established, but may be related to changes that occur with aging in the vertebrae, discs, joints, and muscles, which function as a unit to support the spine. Determining the contribution of genetics to thoracic spine curvature and the degree of genetic sharing among co-occurring measures of spine health may provide insight into the etiology of hyperkyphosis. The purpose of our study was to es…

Our surgical therapeutic attitude in neurological complications of fractures of the spine seems to us justified by the results which we have obtained. It never caused any aggravation and permitted better relief of the complications of bed rest during the early stages. It always permitted satisfactory vertebral position. It is of course difficult to say definitely whether it was responsible for the neurological recovery often observed. It is nevertheless probable in a certain number of cases and in any case, this recovery will occur under better conditions more favourable for later rehabilitati…

Recent studies have challenged the long-held notion that Neanderthals possessed a more stable and less lordotic cervical spine than modern humans. To investigate this hypothesis further, we conducted the first three-dimensional geometric morphometric analysis focused on the Neanderthal cervical spine, examining 43 classic Homo neanderthalensis cervical vertebrae alongside 243 Homo sapiens cervical vertebrae from diverse populations, including the whole cervical spine (C1-C7). The Neanderthal sample comprises specimens from well-known individuals such as La Ferrassie 1, La Chapelle-aux-Saints 1…

This article comprehensively reviews current imaging concepts in spinal infection with primary focus on infectious spondylodiscitis (IS) as well as the less common entity of facet joint septic arthritis (FSA). This review encompasses the multimodality imaging appearances (radiographs, CT, MRI, and nuclear imaging) of spinal infection-both at initial presentation and during treatment-to aid the radiologist in guiding diagnosis and successful management. We discuss the pathophysiology of spinal infection in various patient populations (including the non-instrumented and postoperative spine) as w…

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) of CT junction is uncommon (5 % of all spinal TB), and difficult to approach surgically in view of its deep location with sternum in front and scapula in the back. We present 7 consecutively treated cases of cervico-thoraccic TB for outcome of treatment and discuss rationale of choosing surgical approach.
METHODS: Present study includes 7 freshly diagnosed cases of CT junction TB. Plain radiographs, sagittal reconstruction of CT spine that included sternum on CT/MRI was performed in all cases. Disc space below the distal healthy vertebrae was identified and a lin…

Congenital malformations of the spine and spinal cord are a large and diverse group of diagnoses, which are often broadly referred to as spinal dysraphisms (SDs). Derived from the Greek words dys (bad) and raphe (suture), the term dysraphism describes missteps in the process of forming a midline seam during the zipper-like fusion of the neural folds in primary neurulation. As such, the term "spinal dysraphism" is a designation that should technically be reserved for malformations resulting from aberrations in primary neurulation. In medical practice, however, it is a catch-all designation regu…

Ultrasonography (US) is the first-line imaging modality for screening neonates and young infants with suspected spinal abnormalities. Whether performed for a suspicious congenital skin lesion, such as a lumbosacral tract or lipomatous mass, or abnormal neurological findings, US can help define spinal anatomy, characterize congenital spine malformations, and direct further work-up and management. The purpose of this article is to review the diagnostic imaging approach to infant spine US, including technique and indications, normal anatomy and variants with a focus on embryological origins, and …

With the global rise in the population of elderly along with other risk factors, spine surgeons have to encounter osteoporotic spine more often. Osteoporotic spine, however, causes problems in management, particularly where instrumentation is involved, resulting in screw loosening, pull out, pseudoarthroses or adjacent segment kyphosis. Osteoporosis alters the bio mechanics at the bone implant interface resulting in various degrees of fixation failure. Various advancements have been made in this field to deal with such issues in addition to modification of basic surgical techniques such as inc…

Neck and low back pain are common among the adult human population and impose large social and economic burdens on health care and quality of life. Spine-related disorders are also significant health concerns for canine companions with etiopathogeneses, clinical presentations, and diagnostic and therapeutic options that are very similar to their human counterparts. Historically, induced and spontaneous pathology in laboratory rodents, dogs, sheep, goats, pigs, and nonhuman primates have been used for study of human spine disorders. While each of these can serve as useful preclinical models, th…

In spine surgery, certain surgical techniques and devices are currently in marked decline or have been completely abandoned. Although used in thousands of patients, such treatments failed to demonstrate durable and sound effectiveness, and sometimes associate inacceptable morbidity. Chemopapain injections, percutaneous discectomy, laser discectomy or antiadhesion gels are examples of abandoned therapies. Some other techniques are in frank decline like implantation of interspinous devices or lumbar disc prosthesis. In general, a technique is abandoned due to inefficacy, excessive associated mor…

Dysphagia is a common symptom and can be indicative of a variety of heterogeneous diseases. "Classical" diseases of the head and neck region, such as acute tonsillitis, peritonsillar abscesses, diverticula, and benign or malignant tumors are common causes of dysphagia. However, it can also occur in the context of neurological diseases, e.g., as a result of stroke or as an age-related phenomenon (presbyphagia). Pathologies of the cervical spine can also be a cause of dysphagia. In this context, congenital or acquired diseases, inflammatory or degenerative processes, cervical spine surgery, and …

BACKGROUND: Laminoplasty and laminectomy are 2 common surgical procedures used in treating degenerative and neoplastic diseases of the spinal canal. Routinely used instruments, such as the Kerrison rongeur and high-speed drill, can result in potentially serious complications, such as dural injury and thermal and mechanical damage to neurovascular structures. We adopted piezoelectric bone surgery, which permits a selective cut of mineralized tissues, to perform posterior procedures on the thoracic spine, where the relationship between bone and the spinal cord is critical. The aim of this articl…
