Allyl isothiocyanate induces stomatal closure in Vicia faba.

Isothiocyanates are enzymatically produced from glucosinolates in plants, and allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) induces stomatal closure in Arabidopsis thaliana. In this study, we investigated stomatal responses to AITC in Vicia faba. AITC-induced stomatal closure accompanied by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and NO production, cytosolic alkalization and glutathione (GSH) depletion in V. faba. GSH monoethyl ester induced stomatal reopening and suppressed AITC-induced GSH depletion in guard cells. Exogenous catalase and a peroxidase inhibitor, salicylhydroxamic acid, inhibited AITC-induced stomatal cl

Generalized hydromechanical model for stomatal responses to hydraulic perturbations.

Stomata respond in a common pattern to various hydraulic perturbations on any part of the 'soil-plant-air' system: initial transient 'wrong-way' responses and final stationary 'right-way' responses. In order to describe this pattern on the basis of statistical physics, we propose a simple model where turgor pressure of a cell is taken to be a power function of its volume, and obtain results in qualitative agreement with experimental data for responses to a variety of hydraulic perturbations: Firstly, stationary stomatal conductance as a function of the vapor pressure deficit divides into three

[Improvement of herpetic stomatitis therapy in patients with chronic tonsillitis].

To determine the clinicopathogenetic efficacy of cycloferon liniment in combined therapy of herpetic stomatitis, 60 patients with herpetic stomatitis and chronic tonsillitis were examined and treated. It was shown that the use of cycloferon liniment in the combined therapy of herpetic stomatitis in the patients with chronic tonsillitis allowed to lower the infection load in the parodontal recesses and the local inflammation, to normalize the immunity indices and to reduce the level of the endogenous intoxication, that provided acceleration of the recuperation processes and decreased the freque…

A case report of pernicious anemia and recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

AIM: The aim of this report is to present the management of a patient with pernicious anemia afflicted with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). BACKGROUND: RAS is one of the most common lesions of the oral mucosa. Although the exact etiology of RAS is still unknown different hematinic deficiencies have been proposed. CASE REPORT: Painful recurrent ulcers covered with a grayish pseudomembrane surrounded by an erythematous margin were identified on the tongue and in the buccal mucosa of a 71-year-old woman. The patient also presented with depapilation of the tongue. The clinical diagnosis was…

The recurrent aphthous stomatitis frequency in the smoking cessation people.

This study was aimed to evaluate the frequency of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) within the 6-week period after quitting smoking. The study group consisted of 90 subjects. Oral, medical findings and tobacco habits were recorded for all subjects. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and behavioral treatment were applied to some of the subjects by a family physician. All subjects were evaluated for their RAS and periodontal measurements on baseline, 1, 3, 6 weeks by a periodontist. While the subjects were in this smoking cessation programme, 64 of the 90 smokers successfully quit smoking with…

Endothelial stomatal and fenestral diaphragms in normal vessels and angiogenesis.

Vascular endothelium lines the entire cardiovascular system where performs a series of vital functions including the control of microvascular permeability, coagulation inflammation, vascular tone as well as the formation of new vessels via vasculogenesis and angiogenesis in normal and disease states. Normal endothelium consists of heterogeneous populations of cells differentiated according to the vascular bed and segment of the vascular tree where they occur. One of the cardinal features is the expression of specific subcellular structures such as plas-malemmal vesicles or caveolae, transendot

Risk factors associated with denture stomatitis in the United States.

BACKGROUND: This study reports denture stomatitis (DS) prevalence from a large USA probability sample from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1988-1994 (NHANES III). METHODS: Oral examinations were performed on 3450 individuals 18-90+ years of age (mean: 59.2; SD: 0.50 years), 57.7% male and 42.3% female. Multivariable logistic regression models were fitted for DS using sociodemographic, denture quality, blood analytes, alcohol and tobacco use, history of diabetes, and current antibiotic use as covariates. Odds ratios (OR), adjusted for other covariates in each model (AOR) …

Studies on the role of feline calicivirus in chronic stomatitis in cats.

Two groups of cats were inoculated oro-nasally with one of two isolates of feline calicivirus (FCV) from clinical cases of chronic stomatitis. All cats developed signs typical of acute FCV infection; namely, ocular and nasal discharge, conjunctivitis, and marked oral ulceration. None of the cats shed virus beyond 28 days. Seronegative control cats were then infected with a lower dose of one isolate, but again only acute signs were seen and no carriers produced. The original cats were then re-infected with the heterologous isolate. As before, only signs of acute disease were seen, but the range…

Lack of effect of oral acyclovir on prevention of aphthous stomatitis.

Aphthous stomatitis (canker sores) is a common cause of recurrent mouth ulceration. The effect of long-term oral acyclovir therapy on aphthous stomatitis recurrences was evaluated in 44 patients who were in a double-blind treatment trial for recurrent genital Herpes simplex infections. Twenty-five subjects received oral acyclovir daily for one year, while 19 received the drug only during outbreaks of herpes. The number of patients who experienced recurrences of aphthous stomatitis and the frequency and duration of attacks per patient were not significantly different between groups. Furthermore…

Geographic stomatitis: review of the literature and report of five cases.

Five new cases of geographic stomatitis have been presented along with data from 24 previously reported patients. For the first time, basic parameters of this disorder have been tabulated from this population. Although the earliest documented case appeared in the literature in 1955, the majority of articles has been published during the last 15 years. This increased frequency of reporting indicates a growing awareness of this rather innocuous lesion. Thus, the general practitioner is advised to become familiar with the salient features of geographic stomatitis. Prompt recognition and diagnosis…

IgE and IgD concentrations in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Serum IgE and IgD concentrations were examined in 80 patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), 20 patients with other ulcerative oral disorders, and 39 control subjects. both IgE and IgD concentrations were substantially greater in patients with RAS than in either the other patients with oral disorders or the control subjects. Although the increased IgE concentrations might be related to cell-mediated phenomena in the immunopathogenesis of RAS and the increased IgD concentrations might support the recently postulated role of IgD in immune responses related to the oral cavity, the poss…

A combined clinical, mycological and histological study of denture stomatitis.

The clinical and histological appearance of the different types of denture stomatitis are in many respects very similar and confluent. In order to study the correlation between clinical and histological appearance and amount of yeasts, 48 patients with denture stomatitis and 24 with a healthy palatal mucosa were examined. The terms atrophic and hyperplastic denture stomatitis were introduced. The intensity of the palatal erythema and the growth of yeasts were most prominent among patients with hyperplastic lesions. Dryness and soreness of the mouth, angular cheilitis, spontaneous hemorrhage, g…

Behcet's disease presenting as chronic aphthous stomatitis in a child.

Behcet's disease is a chronic, recurrent, inflammatory disease of unknown cause that involves mucous surfaces, skin, eyes, joints, and the CNS. Although not reported in the pediatric literature, some cases start in childhood. This report describes a child whose chronic oral and genital ulcers preceded recognition of her gastrointestinal tract, eye, and CNS disease for nine years. The current knowledge of Behcet's disease in children is discussed.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis: clinical characteristics and evidence for an immunopathogenesis.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is one of the most common diseases affecting the oral mucosa, and one of its variants is the most painful affliction of the oral mucosa. The lesions of recurrent aphthous stomatitis can be manifested as part of a broad spectrum of clinical disease ranging from the common minor aphthous ulcers to Behçet's syndrome. Differential diagnosis, although not often difficult, must include many conditions capable of producing erosive and ulcerative oral mucosal lesions. The salient features of recurrent aphthous stomatitis suggest that it is a heterogeneous entity. Recent i…
