A Multilevel Network Peer Intervention Among Student Men Who Have Sex With Men Attending University: Protocol for an Implementation-Effectiveness Before-After Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The HIV prevalence among student men who have sex with men (MSM) in China is substantially higher than that in the general student population. However, targeted interventions for this vulnerable population remain limited. While digital technologies and peer-led approaches have shown promise in HIV prevention among MSM, their application in university settings is underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of a multilevel, internet-based peer intervention model in reducing HIV and syphilis incidence, improving prevention behaviors, and

Six years of clinical experience using postcoital contraception in college women.

Postcoital contraception (PCC), also known as the "morning-after pill," has been used at the University of Rochester Health Service for several years. In 1985, the healthcare providers developed a formal protocol for dispensing PCC to female students presenting with the complaint of unprotected intercourse within the previous 72 hours. Patients are screened for any absolute contraindications to using birth control pills, are asked to sign a consent form, and are told to schedule a follow-up visit to evaluate pregnancy status and contraceptive options. Data from 1985 to 1991 is presented and in

Academic and psychosocial characteristics of incoming college freshmen with autism spectrum disorder: The role of comorbidity and gender.

There is a pressing need to better characterize the college-bound population of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as prior studies have included small samples, consisting of individuals who are either recruited due to diagnosis or are treatment seeking. As postsecondary institutions look to respond to the growing need for support services for individuals with ASD, insights derived from large, population-based samples is a necessity. The current study included a sample of over 2000 incoming postsecondary students who self-identified with ASD as a part of surveys distributed by in

University service utilization patterns in students with specific learning disabilities: An institutional cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study examined the relationship between university students' use of common and specific services and the presence of specific learning disabilities (SLDs). The objective was to identify how sociodemographic factors, health status, and learning disabilities impact service utilization, with a focus on improving accessibility and support for students with SLDs. METHODS: Employing random but voluntary sampling, a cross-sectional survey of university students was conducted using a tool demonstrating good internal reliability (Cronbach's α = 0.859). The survey collected

Wellbeing and mental health amongst medical students in Canada.

Across the world there is significant evidence that medical students have high levels of mental ill-health and psychological distress with subsequent concerning effects on personal and occupational functioning. In Canada, recent studies have demonstrated worrying levels of burnout and depressive symptoms among practising doctors. In common with other countries, Canadian medical students are also subject to a high-pressure environment - with long clinical weeks and significant stressors - and these soon-to-be doctors have been previously shown to already demonstrate high levels of burnout. We s

Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Their First-Year College Experiences.

Using data from the 2019 CIRP Freshman Survey and the Your First College Year (YFCY) from the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA, this study explores the differences between the characteristics and behaviors of the first-year students with autism spectrum disorders (17) and those of students with learning disabilities (102). The findings indicate that the characteristics of these two groups of first-year college students were similar except for gender, ethnicity, first college generation, and parents' income. Compared with first-year college students with LD, students with ASD were le

Incorporating Experiential Learning Techniques to Improve Self-Efficacy in Clinical Special Care Dentistry Education.

The New York University College of Dentistry has introduced a clinical rotation for fourth-year dental students that focuses on treating people with special health care needs (PSN). The aim of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that clinical experience in treating patients with special health care needs during predoctoral education is associated with increased self-assessed student ability and comfort and therefore self-efficacy. The study also investigated whether other characteristics, such as prior personal or volunteer experience with this population, service-mindedness, and/or t

Evidence-based practice as a potential solution to burnout in university counseling center clinicians.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of changes in perceptions about patient volume and severity of clinical presentations in university counseling centers (UCCS) on burnout. It was hypothesized that perceptions of increased workload and severity of conditions treated would be positively correlated with burnout. It was also hypothesized that self-reported use of evidence-based practice (EBP) would be negatively correlated with burnout. Counseling center clinicians (n = 80) completed the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI), the Evidence-Based Practice Attitudes Scale (EPBAS), and

Understanding and Addressing the Needs of Students in Special Education Through a Trauma-Informed Resilience Curriculum.

This school program evaluation aims to highlight the mental health needs of students in special education with behavioral and emotional challenges and describe the implementation of a resilience curriculum with this population. We evaluated district mental health data from a convenience sample of 814 students in grades 5-12 special education to identify risk for mental health symptoms, violence exposure, and substance use. School social workers provided feedback on the implementation of the resilience curriculum to inform program evaluation. Students reported significant risk for traumatic str

Anxious, Depressed, and Suicidal: Crisis Narratives in University Student Mental Health and the Need for a Balanced Approach to Student Wellness.

There is growing global awareness of the poor mental health of university students, as well as the need to improve students' access to services and expand the range of available evidence-based interventions. However, a crisis narrative is emerging, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, that runs the risk of positioning all students as potential patients in need of formal psychiatric interventions. Our aim in this commentary is to critically present the evidence that supports increased attention to student mental health, while also raising a concern that the crisis narrative may it

Mental health support in German schools: a cross-sectional survey study of principals on demand vs. provision of support services.

INTRODUCTION: Student mental health concerns are rising globally and educational institutions constitute critical settings for the prevention and early intervention of these issues in youth. Yet, mental health support structures often vary between countries, regions, and schools and a systematic monitoring of provision and use of services is missing. METHODS: To fill this gap, we surveyed 486 principals across 13 German federal states in spring 2024 with a questionnaire developed through literature review, expert interviews and pilot testing by an interdisciplinary expert committee. The instr

Latent profiles of HPV vaccine-related health beliefs and their associations with vaccination intention among college students: a global health perspective.

PURPOSE: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is an effective strategy for preventing cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases, yet uptake among young adults remains suboptimal. College students may hold heterogeneous vaccine-related beliefs that are not fully captured by variable-centered analyses. This study aimed to identify latent profiles of HPV vaccine-related health beliefs among Chinese college students and examine their associations with HPV vaccine knowledge, social support and perceived service accessibility, e-health literacy, vaccination intention, and uptake. METHODS: A

Challenges experienced by U.S. K-12 public schools in serving students with special education needs or underlying health conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic and strategies for improved accessibility.

BACKGROUND: Students with special education needs or underlying health conditions have been disproportionately impacted (e.g., by reduced access to services) throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. OBJECTIVE: This study describes challenges reported by schools in providing services and supports to students with special education needs or underlying health conditions and describes schools' use of accessible communication strategies for COVID-19 prevention. METHODS: This study analyzes survey data from a nationally representative sample of U.S. K-12 public schools (n = 420, February-March 2022). Wei

"I Would Report It Even If They Have Not Committed Anything": Social Service Students' Attitudes Toward Minor-Attracted People.

This study explores future mental health providers' assumptions about minor-attracted people, using data from a survey of 200 students preparing for entry into social service professions at a public university in the state of Utah. Survey results show that more than half of the students believe clients who identify themselves as pedophiles must be automatically reported to the police, which has implications for providers' understandings about the term "pedophile," as well as their knowledge of guidelines for when clinicians may break client confidentiality. This belief was not significantly af
