Growing evidence supports a role for mitochondrial iron metabolism in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disorders such as Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) and Parkinson disease (PD) as well as in the motor and cognitive decline associated with the aging process. We report the first theoretical study of noncovalent and covalent interactions in formic acid (FA)-SO(2) complexes. Using ab initio and DFT model chemistries, five stable noncovalent complexes were identified, as well as a covalent adduct, formic sulfurous anhydride HOSO(2)CHO. syn-FA is predicted to form two nonplanar bidentate complexes with SO(2): the more stable one contains a normal hydrogen bond donated by OH, and the less stable one contains a blue-shifted hydrogen bond donated by CH. An experimental study was carried out to measure the solubility of sulfur dioxide in chlorine-treated wastewater over the temperature range of 10-40 degrees C. Emission rates of carbonyl sulfide (COS), carbon disulfide (CS2) and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) to the atmosphere from wheat fields treated with different fertilizers were measured by using the closed chamber method. The results showed that the emission rate of COS, CS2 and DMS was affected by wheat growth and COS was absorbed by the plants. DMS and CS2 were the predominant sulfur gases emitted from these fields. One week of nightly application of sulfur-salicylic acid shampoo as a lotion was evaluated for the treatment of tinea versicolor. One half of the randomly allocated patients used the active preparation and the other half used a bland oil-in-water lotion as a placebo. Three months after completing treatment, nineteen of twenty-two using sulfur-salicylic acid shampoo were still negative by KOH examination, whereas only one of sixteen controls was negative. Skin irritation occurred in a few patients but did not reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.

Lymphoscintigrams were performed using technetium-99m antimony sulfur colloid in 21 patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma. Scintigraphic results were concordant with clinical prediction of lymph drainage in six of 11 patients with trunk melanoma, in five of seven patients with extremity lesions, and in none of three patients with scalp melanoma. This report describes an industrial accident in which 5 previously healthy persons were acutely exposed to very high concentrations of sulfur dioxide.
