Classification of Opioid Usage Through Semi-Supervised Learning for Total Joint Replacement Patients.

Opioid misuse and overdose have become a public health hazard and caused drug addiction and death in the United States due to rapid increase in prescribed and non-prescribed opioid usage. The misuse and overdose are highly related to opioid over-prescription for chronic and acute pain treatment, where a one-size-fits-all prescription plan is often adopted but can lead to substantial leftovers for patients who only consume a few. To reduce over-prescription and opioid overdose, each patient's opioid usage pattern should be taken into account. As opioids are often prescribed for patients after t

Direct Cup-to-Disc Ratio Estimation for Glaucoma Screening via Semi-Supervised Learning.

Glaucoma is a chronic eye disease that leads to irreversible vision loss. The Cup-to-Disc Ratio (CDR) serves as the most important indicator for glaucoma screening and plays a significant role in clinical screening and early diagnosis of glaucoma. In general, obtaining CDR is subjected to measuring on manually or automatically segmented optic disc and cup. Despite great efforts have been devoted, obtaining CDR values automatically with high accuracy and robustness is still a great challenge due to the heavy overlap between optic cup and neuroretinal rim regions. In this paper, a direct CDR est

AntiMalarial Mode of Action (AMMA) Database: Data Selection, Verification and Chemical Space Analysis.

This paper presents the effort of collecting and curating a data set of 15461 molecules tested against the malaria parasite, with robust activity and mode of action annotations. The set is compiled from in-house experimental data and the public ChEMBL database subsets. We illustrate the usefulness of the dataset by building QSAR models for antimalarial activity and QSPR models for modes of actions, as well as by the analysis of the chemical space with the Generative Topographic Mapping method. The GTM models perform well in prediction of both activity and mode of actions, on par with the class

Boosting Semi-Supervised Medical Image Segmentation Through Inter-Instance Information Complementarity.

The acquisition of expert-annotated data remains a critical bottleneck for medical image segmentation, thereby constraining the clinical applicability of highly accurate models. Crucially, despite this scarcity of labeled data, the intrinsic homogeneity in human anatomy across the cohort provides a fundamental basis (or: a promising leverage point) for enhancing model generalization and training efficiency by exploiting inter-instance anatomical complementarity. In this study, we propose a novel semi-supervised approach for medical image segmentation that fully exploits this inter-instance com

Task-optimized brain parcellations reveal latent functional organization for enhanced connectivity-based neuroimaging classification.

Brain parcellation schemes are fundamental to neuroimaging, yet general-purpose atlases may obscure the specific functional architecture relevant to a given cognitive task or clinical condition. This reflects a growing consensus that the "optimal" brain map is context-dependent. Here, we introduce a novel framework that validates this principle by generating task-optimized human brain parcellation maps directly from supervised learning objectives. Our method defines functional parcels by grouping brain regions based on the similarity of their contributions to a classifier's decision boundary f

SSL-LODDA: Self-supervised learning for low-light object detection with domain adaptation.

Object detection under low-light conditions is severely challenged by illumination degradation, noise, and large distribution discrepancies between well-lit source domains and low-light target domains. Moreover, the lack of annotated low-light data significantly limits the effectiveness of supervised learning approaches. To address these issues, this paper presents a unified self-supervised domain-adaptive object detection framework that jointly integrates self-supervised representation learning, adversarial and statistical domain alignment, GAN-based synthetic augmentation, and pseudo-label r

Uncertainty-weighted dual-domain consistency for self-supervised accelerated MRI reconstruction.

Accelerated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) typically relies on fully sampled k-space data to train supervised reconstruction networks, which are difficult to acquire in clinical practice. To eliminate this dependency, we propose a novel dual-domain self-supervised learning (Dual-SSL) framework that rigorously enforces physical consistency in both image and k-space domains. The framework employs a shared-intersection re-undersampling strategy to generate two sub-masks with approximately 50% overlap, preserving essential low-frequency priors, which are subsequently concatenated for efficient s

Coarse for Fine: Bounding Box Supervised Thyroid Ultrasound Image Segmentation Using Spatial Arrangement and Hierarchical Prediction Consistency.

Weakly-supervised learning methods have become increasingly attractive for medical image segmentation, but suffered from a high dependence on quantifying the pixel-wise affinities of low-level features, which are easily corrupted in thyroid ultrasound images, resulting in segmentation over-fitting to weakly annotated regions without precise delineation of target boundaries. We propose a dual-branch weakly-supervised learning framework to optimize the backbone segmentation network by calibrating semantic features into rational spatial distribution under the indirect, coarse guidance of the boun

Leveraging Self-Supervised Learning Methods for Remote Screening of Subjects with Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation.

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into clinical research has great potential to reveal patterns that are difficult for humans to detect, creating impactful connections between inputs and clinical outcomes. However, these methods often require large amounts of labeled data, which can be difficult to obtain in healthcare due to strict privacy laws and the need for experts to annotate data. This requirement creates a bottleneck when investigating unexplored clinical questions. This study explores the application of Self-Supervised Learning (SSL) as a way to obtain preliminary result

Texture-based speciation of otitis media-related bacterial biofilms from optical coherence tomography images using supervised classification.

Otitis media (OM), a highly prevalent inflammatory middle-ear disease in children worldwide, is commonly caused by an infection, and can lead to antibiotic-resistant bacterial biofilms in recurrent/chronic OM cases. A biofilm related to OM typically contains one or multiple bacterial species. OCT has been used clinically to visualize the presence of bacterial biofilms in the middle ear. This study used OCT to compare microstructural image texture features from bacterial biofilms. The proposed method applied supervised machine-learning-based frameworks (SVM, random forest, and XGBoost) to class

Self-supervised learning for characterising histomorphological diversity and spatial RNA expression prediction across 23 human tissue types.

As vast histological archives are digitised, there is a pressing need to be able to associate specific tissue substructures and incident pat … genes, recapitulating their known spatial specificity. Together, these results demonstrate how self-supervised machine learning when applied to vast histological archives allows researchers to answer questions about tissue pathology, its spatial organisation and the interplay between morphological tissue variability and gene expression.

Uncertainty guided semi-supervised few-shot segmentation with prototype level fusion.

Few-Shot Semantic Segmentation (FSS) aims to tackle the challenge of segmenting novel categories with limited annotated data. However, given the diversity among support-query pairs, transferring meta-knowledge to unseen categories poses a significant challenge, particularly in scenarios featuring substantial intra-class variance within an episode task. To alleviate this issue, we propose the Uncertainty Guided Adaptive Prototype Network (UGAPNet) for semi-supervised few-shot semantic segmentation. The key innovation lies in the generation of reliable pseudo-prototypes as an additional suppleme

MA-MIL: Sampling point-level abnormal ECG location method via weakly supervised learning.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Current automatic electrocardiogram (ECG) diagnostic systems could provide classification outcomes but often lack explanations for these results. This limitation hampers their application in clinical diagnoses. Previous supervised learning could not highlight abnormal segmentation output accurately enough for clinical application without manual labeling of large ECG datasets. METHOD: In this study, we present a multi-instance learning framework called MA-MIL, which has designed a multi-layer and multi-instance structure that is aggregated step by step at different sc

A supervised learning method for classifying methylation disorders.

BACKGROUND: DNA methylation is one of the most stable and well-characterized epigenetic alterations in humans. Accordingly, it has already found clinical utility as a molecular biomarker in a variety of disease contexts. Existing methods for clinical diagnosis of methylation-related disorders focus on outlier detection in a small number of CpG sites using standardized cutoffs which differentiate healthy from abnormal methylation levels. The standardized cutoff values used in these methods do not take into account methylation patterns which are known to differ between the sexes and with age. R

Early prediction of Mycobacterium tuberculosis transmission clusters using supervised learning models.

Identifying individuals with tuberculosis (TB) with a high risk of onward transmission can guide disease prevention and public health strategies. Here, we train classification models to predict the first sampled isolates in Mycobacterium tuberculosis transmission clusters from demographic and disease data. We find that supervised learning, in particular balanced random forests, can be used to develop predictive models to identify people with TB that are more likely associated with TB cluster growth, with good model performance and AUCs of ≥ 0.75. We also identified the most important patient a

Image Reconstruction Using Supervised Learning in Wearable Electrical Impedance Tomography of the Thorax.

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive technique for visualizing the internal structure of a human body. Capacitively coupled electrical impedance tomography (CCEIT) is a new contactless EIT technique that can potentially be used as a wearable device. Recent studies have shown that a machine learning-based approach is very promising for EIT image reconstruction. Most of the studies concern models containing up to 22 electrodes and focus on using different artificial neural network models, from simple shallow networks to complex convolutional networks. However, the use of convo

A self-supervised language model selection strategy for biomedical question answering.

Large neural-based Pre-trained Language Models (PLM) have recently gained much attention due to their noteworthy performance in many downstream Information Retrieval (IR) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks. PLMs can be categorized as either general-purpose, which are trained on resources such as large-scale Web corpora, and domain-specific which are trained on in-domain or mixed-domain corpora. While domain-specific PLMs have shown promising performance on domain-specific tasks, they are significantly more computationally expensive compared to general-purpose PLMs as they have to be e
