A tannic acid-iron co-modified polyphenylene sulfone ultrafiltration membrane with improved surface hydrophilicity and antifouling properties.

This study presents the fabrication and evaluation of novel ultrafiltration (UF) membranes based on a polyethersulfone (PES) matrix incorporating tannic acid (TA) and TA-Fe3+ coordination complexes (ITF) via a dip-coating approach, with the aim of enhancing surface hydrophilicity and antifouling properties. The successful integration of TA and ITF within the PES structure were verified using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). As a result of this successful integration, membranes modified with ITF for the optimal membrane composition (TA: Fe3+ molar ratio of 10:1) de

Impact of Layer Thickness on Mechanical Properties and Surface Roughness of FDM-Printed Carbon Fiber-PEEK Composite.

Fused deposition modeling (FDM)-based three-dimensional (3D) fabrication offers a viable approach to manufacturing highly customized carbon fiber-reinforced polyether ether ketone (CFR-PEEK) components with complex geometries. However, the mechanical properties and surface roughness of FDM-fabricated parts are strongly influenced by processing parameters, particularly layer thickness. This study investigates the influence of layer thickness (0.1 mm and 0.2 mm) on the surface roughness, crystallinity, mechanical properties, and morphological characteristics of FDM-printed 10% CFR-PEEK specimens

Biomimetic organomineral layers with antibacterial properties based on di/tetrahydroquinolinediol and nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite deposited on enamel surface.

The paper proposes a strategy for the accelerated deposition of biomimetic organomineral layers on the surface of dental enamel, utilizing di/tetrahydroquinolinediol (hydroxyquinoline) polymerized in the presence of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (nano-cHAp). The mechanisms underlying the formation of dental coatings were elucidated through a combination of structural, microstructural, and spectroscopic analytical methods, including synchrotron infrared nanoimaging. Additionally, the antimicrobial effects of these coatings were investigated. It has been demonstrated that the deposition of an o

"Ultrasmall" ZrO2 Nanoparticles: Disentangling Core and Surface Contributions to Structural and Electronic Properties through First-Principles Modeling.

We resort to first-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the PBE and PBE0 levels of theory to examine the structure, stability, and electronic properties of zirconia nanoparticles (NPs) with diameters ranging from 0.9 to 2.0 nm. A procedure based on the use of water molecules and an appropriate MD thermal annealing cycle is developed to generate [ZrO2] n models with different sizes (n = 14, 16, 43, 80, and 141) and different surface passivation states. It is shown that the rate of passivation has a significant influence on the NP structure and

NIR-Driven Self-Healing Phase-Change Solid Slippery Surface with Stability and Promising Antifouling and Anticorrosion Properties.

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have great potential to replace traditional antifouling coatings due to their efficient, green, and broad-spectrum antifouling performance. However, the lubricant dissipation problem of SLIPS severely restricts its further development and application, and the robust SLIPS continues to be extremely challenging. Here, a composite phase-change lubricant layer consisting of paraffin, silicone oil, and MXene is designed to readily construct a stable and NIR-responsive self-healing phase-change solid slippery surface (PCSSS). Collective results showed

Gravity-driven membrane coupled with oxidation technology to modify the surface properties and biofilm formation: Biofouling mitigation.

Biofilms caused by biological fouling play an essential role in gravity-driven membranes' (GDMs) flux decline and rejection rate. The effects of ozone, permanganate, and ferrate (VI) in-situ pretreatment on membrane properties and biofilm formation were systematically studied. Due to the selective retention and adsorption of algal organic matter by biofilms and oxidative degradation, the rejection efficiency of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in algae-laden water pretreated with permanganate by GDM was up to 23.63%. Pre-oxidation extraordinarily postponed flux decline and biofilm formation of G

Tuning Both Surface Chemistry and Porous Properties of Polymer-Derived Porous Carbons for High-Performance Gas Adsorption.

In this study, we have prepared novel pyrrole-formaldehyde polymers through polymerizing pyrrole and formaldehyde in the mixture solvent of water and ethanol by using hydrochloric acid as a catalyst. The as-synthesized polymers possess a nitrogen content of 6.7 atom % and are composed of spherical particles with the diameter of approximately 1-3 μm. A series of nitrogen-doped porous carbons with high specific surface areas (680-2340 m2 g-1) were successfully obtained through the activation treatment of the polymer spheres. The porous properties and surface chemistry of the as-prepared porous c

Immune evasion of Borrelia miyamotoi: CbiA, a novel outer surface protein exhibiting complement binding and inactivating properties.

Borrelia (B.) miyamotoi, an emerging tick-borne relapsing fever spirochete, resists complement-mediated killing. To decipher the molecular principles of immune evasion, we sought to identify determinants contributing to complement resistance. Employing bioinformatics, we identified a gene encoding for a putative Factor H-binding protein, termed CbiA (complement binding and inhibitory protein A). Functional analyses revealed that CbiA interacted with complement regulator Factor H (FH), C3, C3b, C4b, C5, and C9. Upon binding to CbiA, FH retained its cofactor activity for Factor I-mediated inacti

The LMW surface-layer proteins of Clostridium difficile PCR ribotypes 027 and 001 share common immunogenic properties.

The aim of this study was to investigate the S-layer proteins (SLPs) of the hypervirulent Clostridium difficile PCR ribotype 027 and compare them with those of PCR ribotype 001 and other PCR ribotypes involved in C. difficile infection and outbreaks, by molecular analysis and immunological assays. It has been demonstrated previously that PCR ribotype 027 SlpA is conserved in C. difficile strains belonging to this PCR ribotype and that it is a new variant, showing 88 % identity with SlpA of PCR ribotype 001. As the low-molecular-weight (LMW) SLPs of C. difficile are immunodominant antigens, att

DRAQ5-based DNA content analysis of hematolymphoid cell subpopulations discriminated by surface antigens and light scatter properties.

BACKGROUND: Analysis of cell cycle kinetics offers important information regarding the behavior of normal and neoplastic cells. Most often, cell cycle determinations by flow cytometry (FCM) have been performed using whole-sample analysis with intercalating dyes like propidium iodide (PI). The cell cycle phase assessment in individual cell subsets in heterogeneous samples is best performed using combined antigen/scatter and DNA analysis. DRAQ5, a novel DNA binding dye that excites at 488 nm and emits in the far red spectra, rapidly penetrates intact live cells while preserving their light scatt

In Vitro Evaluation of Manual, Electric, and Sonic Toothbrushing on Composite Restoration Surface Properties and Retention in Primary Teeth.

Background: The longevity of composite restorations in primary teeth depends on the preservation of both mechanical performance and surface integrity under daily oral hygiene procedures. While powered toothbrushes have been widely investigated for plaque control, their potential effects on restorative materials in the primary dentition remain insufficiently characterized. This preliminary in vitro study evaluated the influence of manual, oscillating-rotating electric, and sonic toothbrushing on the surface microhardness, surface roughness, and shear resistance of resin composite restorations i

Design of biosurfactant proteins with pH-sensitive reversible surface-active property and their excellent foam and emulsion stability.

Biosurfactant proteins obtained through microbial fermentation have garnered increasing attention as their strong sequence designability and cost-effectiveness. A series of novel biosurfactant proteins (DL21P4, DAFP4 and DAFSP4) as pH-responsive surfactants was designed by a seven-residue repeating motif peptide Lac21 with α-helical structure. These proteins exhibit a conformation composed of α-helices and random coils, which facilitates their stable adsorption at the interface. Compared with DL21P4 and DAFP4, DAFSP4 with special silk-derived hydrophobic tail peptide tends to undergo multilaye
