Results of ligation of patent ductus arteriosus in dogs: 201 cases (1969-1988).

Surgical treatment of 201 dogs with patent ductus arteriosus at the College of Veterinary Medicine, The Ohio State University was evaluated retrospectively to determine risk factors for development of surgical complications. During surgery, 15 dogs (7%) died because of hemorrhage associated with ductus dissection (n = 8), pulmonary edema (n = 4), ventricular fibrillation (n = 1), hemorrhage not associated with ductus dissection (n = 1), and cardiac arrest immediately after ductus ligation (n = 1). An additional 8 dogs (4%) died less than 1 month after surgery (total mortality before, during, a

Feline Injection-Site Sarcoma Treated with Surgery, Orthovoltage Radiotherapy, and Electrochemotherapy. A Retrospective Series of 72 Cases.

INTRODUCTION: Feline injection-site sarcoma (FISS) can arise from various agents that induce inflammation in the tissue, such as the injection of vaccines, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, or even sutures. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, 72 cats with FISS grade 1 to 3 located in the spine or costo-abdominal area were included. They were separated into two categories: (A) patients treated with surgery with clean margins alone, surgery plus orthovoltage radiotherapy, and surgery plus electrochemotherapy. And category (B), patients treated with surgery without clean margins,

Training total laparoscopic gastropexy using a composed simulator and evaluating the significant transfer of surgical skills performed in growing pigs in vivo.

BACKGROUND: An advanced curriculum for training Total Laparoscopic Gastropexy (TLG) was developed using the CVLTS-composed simulator based on an ergonomic model of a canine abdominal cavity. The performance of Veterinary surgeons trained in basic laparoscopic surgical skills during 15 training TLG sessions (experimental group, n = 10) was compared to the TLG performance of veterinary surgeons with intermediate (n = 10) or advanced (n = 6) laparoscopic skills. The transfer of surgical skills to a live model was assessed by performing TLG in fattening pigs under operating room conditions using b

Prophylactic antibiotic usage by Belgian veterinarians during elective caesarean section in Belgian blue cattle.

The use of prophylactic antibiotics in veterinary surgery reduces the occurrence of postoperative complications. In order to limit the development of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria and to maximize therapy efficacy, antibiotics should be used prudently and efficiently. A survey was sent to Wallonian rural veterinarians in order to assess the use of antibiotics before, during and after bovine elective caesarean section, the most common surgical procedure in Belgian rural practice. Results were analysed in the light of the current guidelines formulated by the Belgian Centre of Expertise on

Real-time PCR detection and quantitation of Chlamydophila psittaci in human and avian specimens from a veterinary clinic cluster.

We report three cases of psittacosis in staff working in a veterinary surgery, which was related to exposure to a sick, wild psittacine bird. Chlamydial genus- and chlamydial species-specific DNA was detected in clinical specimens, including throat swabs, whole blood and urine. The organism load was quantified by real-time PCR (RT-PCR), which revealed 10(5)-fold more organisms in conjunctival swabs from the source bird than in the human samples. One clinic attendant was infected despite using personal protective equipment when handling the bird. This is the first report of PCR analyses of bloo

Preoperative and Surgical Predictors of the Treatment Outcome of Dairy Cows with Right Abomasal Displacement-A Retrospective Study of 234 Cases.

The displacement of the abomasum to the right (RDA) is a common condition regularly encountered in dairy cows, which requires urgent surgical correction. The survival of the patient primarily depends on early diagnosis and timely treatment, but other factors contributing to the outcome have been discussed in the literature. The objective of this study was to identify preoperative clinical, hematological, as well as intraoperative parameters that are associated with the prognosis of cows with RDA or abomasal volvulus (AV). This retrospective study included patients admitted to a veterinary teac

Retroperitoneal fibrosis in four cats following renal transplantation.

Four cats developed fibrosis within the retroperitoneal space following renal transplantation. In human transplant patients, retroperitoneal fibrosis is an uncommon complication following surgery and may be secondary to operative trauma, infection, deposition of foreign material in the operative field, urinary extravasation, and perirenal hemorrhage caused by trauma to the allograft. Possible causes of fibrosis in the cats of this report include abdominal inflammation associated with allograft rejection, pyelonephritis, and septic peritoneal effusion. All of the cats of this report were readmi

Encapsulated granuloma (surgiceloma) caused by retained Surgicel® following liver lobectomy in a dog: a case report.

A 12-year-old dog underwent liver lobectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma, and Surgicel® was used intraoperatively for haemostasis. Three months after surgery, computed tomography revealed a solitary abdominal mass, which was surgically removed. Histopathology identified the mass as retained Surgicel® surrounded by granulomatous inflammation. Although Surgicel® is generally considered safe, retained material may mimic abscess, haematoma or tumour recurrence on imaging. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first veterinary case describing an encapsulated granuloma caused by retained Surgice

Hip dysplasia induction: Establishment of a new surgical model in rabbits.

Hip dysplasia (HD) is an arthropathy with an incompletely understood pathophysiology. Existing induction HD models fall short of providing feasible data to test new therapeutic strategies. This study aimed to characterize and validate a new surgical model of HD in rabbits. Seventeen 6-week-old male New Zealand white rabbits were randomly assigned to 3 groups: GI (n = 3) - control group, with six normal hips (NH); GII (n = 7) - seven left instability surgery hips (ISH) and seven right surgery sham hips (SSH); GIII (n = 7) - seven left instability surgery hips, followed by hindlimb bandage immob

A long survival case of spinal nephroblastoma in a dog.

BACKGROUND: Dogs' nephroblastoma of the spinal cord is a rare neoplastic disease, with few reports of long-term survival after surgery. We experienced that surgical treatment with postoperative radiation therapy for spinal nephroblastoma in a dog resulted in the long-term survival of 11 years. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient presented to our veterinary hospital because of progressive hindlimb paralysis. Based on diagnostic imaging, she was diagnosed with a thoracolumbar spinal cord tumor and was treated with surgery. The gross tumor tissue was removed after laminectomy, followed by postoperativ

Lumbar Myelopathy Caused by Multiple Cartilaginous Exostoses in a Dog.

A 6-months-old male mixed-breed dog was admitted to the veterinary hospital with lameness in the right pelvic limb, proprioceptive ataxia, and suspected spinal cord injury in the lumbosacral segment. Upon palpation, firm nodules were noted on the bony surface of the thoracic and pelvic limbs, ribs, vertebrae, and tail. The radiographic study showed nodules of low radiopacity with well-defined limits and smooth contours, one of which was overlapping the fifth lumbar vertebra. Given the clinical presentation indicative of spinal cord injury, the animal was subjected to hemilaminectomy for nodula

The occurrence of osteosarcoma after tibial fracture repair in a dog.

BACKGROUND: There are few detailed reports on implant-associated sarcoma in dogs; however, loose implants, metal type, and infection have not been shown as specific risk factors for this condition. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 14-year-old spayed female Labrador retriever was referred to our hospital with a main complaint of chronic right hind lameness after previous tibial fracture repair. On radiographs, rupture of the bone plate and screws with swelling of the surrounding soft tissue was observed, and osteosarcoma (OSA) was diagnosed after histopathological examinations. During amputation surgery, a

Endoscopic Endocautery Polypectomy for the Treatment of Duodenal and Gastric Polyps in a Cat.

Endoscopic polypectomy is commonly performed in human medicine, with large-scale studies reported. However, few reports have described its use in veterinary medicine and, specifically, the procedure in the case of duodenal polyps in cats has not been reported. A 7 kg 14-year-old cat presented with recurrent vomiting for several months. Gastroduodenoscopy revealed a pedunculated polyp at the pyloric antrum and another in the duodenum, with its head protruding into the pylorus. Endoscopic polypectomy was performed using an electrosurgical snare with no recurrence of clinical signs after six mont

Spontaneous mural gallbladder hematoma in a dog.

A 12-year-old spayed female Maltese dog was evaluated because of a 12-hour history of vomiting, mucoid diarrhea, and anorexia. There was no history of trauma or injury. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a well-defined mass associated with the gallbladder. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) confirmed a non-contrast enhancing mass emanating from the gallbladder wall causing separation of the serosal and mucosal margins. Exploratory celiotomy followed by cholecystectomy was performed. Histology of the gallbladder mass was consistent with a mural hematoma and there were no signs of significant inflamm

Biliary atresia: the animal models.

Biliary atresia (BA) is a progressive fibrosing process of the neonatal biliary tree and liver, of unknown origin, and an as-yet unexplained pathologic mechanism. The crucial point is to elucidate the origin of this rare disease to change palliative surgery to etiology-related procedures. Patient-based research can only begin at the time of the Kasai procedure and does not allow retracing of the pathology back to its origin. Basic research has focused on similar diseases in the veterinary literature and started to simulate BA in animal models. Unfortunately, even after 50 years of research, no

Surgical management of cervical spinal epidural abscess caused by Brucella melitensis : report of two cases and review of the literature.

Spinal epidural abscess, if especially caused by Brucellosis is a very rare disease which is usually a consequence of spondylodiscitis. The spinal column can be affected at any joint; however, the lumbar spine is the most common region, especially at the level of the L4-5 and L5-S1. The frequency of spinal involvement usually seen at the lumbar, thoracic and cervical spine respectively. As an occupational disease in farmers, veterinaries, butchers, laboratory staff and shepherds, brucellosis can also occur by direct contact to animals and infected materials or ingestion of raw cheese, milk or

Endoscopic diagnosis of a pylorogastric intussusception with spontaneous resolution.

A 7 mo old intact female golden retriever was evaluated for acute vomiting. Abdominal radiographs revealed a possible gastric foreign body. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed an edematous, tubular antral mass, which on further evaluation was determined to be a pylorogastric intussusception based on radiographic, endoscopic, and surgical findings. Spontaneous resolution of the intussusception occurred upon surgical exploration of the abdomen. Histopathology of a full-thickness gastric biopsy revealed vascular congestion consistent with an intussusception, but did not indicate the primary

Pelvic aneurysmal bone cyst in a dog.

A three-year-old male Siberian Husky dog was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Osaka Prefecture University with a complaint of difficulty in expelling the stools. By rectal examination, a mass as big as a fist could be detected occupying the cavum pelvis. Radiographically the mass had a thin bony shell bulging from the pubic periosteum. In the shell, radiolucent trabeculation gave the area a "soap bubble" appearance. The cut surface of the removed mass showed a honeycomb-like pattern constituted of some small loculate bony cysts. These cysts were separated from each other by a fi
