The maintenance of energy homeostasis is essential for life, and its dysregulation leads to a variety of metabolic disorders. Under a fed co … er an increase or a decrease in energy expenditure, respectively, by regulating the activity of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). The regulation of metabolic homeostasis by glucose is well recognized; however, the roles of SCFAs and ketone bodies in maintaining energy balance remain unclear. Here, we show that SCFAs and ketone bodies directly regulate SNS activity via G …

CONTEXT: Sympathetic nervous system (SNS) overactivity participates in both the pathogenesis and adverse clinical complications of metabolic syndrome (MetS) obesity.
OBJECTIVE: We conducted a prospective lifestyle intervention trial to compare the effects of active weight loss and extended weight loss maintenance on SNS function and MetS components.
METHODS: Untreated subjects (14 males, four females; mean age, 53 ± 1 yr; body mass index, 30.9 ± 0.9 kg/m(2)) who fulfilled Adult Treatment Panel III criteria were randomized to 12-wk hypocaloric diet alone (n = 8) or together with aerobic exerc…

The cardiovascular metabolic syndrome is characterized by the presence of several cardiovascular risk factors, including blood pressure (BP) elevation. We aimed to study the relation between mental stress, plasma catecholamines, BP and BP responses to mental stress in healthy young Caucasian men selected from different levels of screening BP. We included 98 men with high and 22 men with normal screening BP. They were examined at baseline in the laboratory, during a hyperinsulinemic, isoglycemic glucose clamp and during mental stress. At baseline in the laboratory, the men with high screening B

UNLABELLED: The pathological mechanism of cerebral vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage has not been well clarified until now. There have been reports that denervation supersensitivity in cerebral vessels occurring after subarachnoid hemorrhage may possible play a role in the appearance of cerebral vasospasm. On the other hand, we have accepted that oxyhemoglobin (Oxy-Hb) is an important spasmogenic substance. In the present study, we investigated the effect of chemical denervation (reserpine or 6-hydroxydopamine: 6-OHDA) and surgical denervation (bilateral superior cervical ganglionect

UNLABELLED: Severe left ventricular dysfunction or cardiac sympathetic nervous system (SNS) abnormality predicts cardiac death in various heart diseases, including arrhythmogenic disorders. However, it is not clear whether SNS abnormality predicts sudden cardiac death during long-term follow-up in patients with a history of ventricular tachyarrhythmia. We hypothesized that SNS abnormality would be associated with recurrent ventricular arrhythmic events.
METHODS: 123I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scintigraphy was performed on 86 patients (mean age+/-SD, 46+/-19 y, 65.1% men) with a history o…

Talsaclidine, a novel M1-receptor selective muscarinic agonist for cholinergic substitution therapy of Alzheimer's disease, activates the sympathetic nervous system in guinea pigs and dogs at the orthosympathic ganglia and the paraganglionic adrenals. Results from guinea pigs provide indirect evidence for an additional central site of action. The present investigation in anaesthetized and vagotomized guinea pigs intended to demonstrate central activation of the sympathetic nervous system directly by comparing the blood pressure effects of intracerebroventricular and intravenous injections of s…

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have been considered the most predominant cause of death and one of the most critical public health issues wo … ivity as a compensatory mechanism to keep cardiac output in the face of declining cardiac function. Sympathetic nervous system (SNS) overactivity is supported by a rise in plasma noradrenaline (NA) and adrenaline levels, raised central sympathetic outflow, and increased organ-specific spillover of NA into plasma. Cardiac NA spillover in untreated HF individuals can reach ~5 …

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether ocular migraines can be related to sympathetic nervous system hypofunction, especially when associated with interstitial cystitis and dyspareunia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dextroamphetamine sulfate was administered to a 34-year-old woman with a history of long-term interstitial cystitis, dyspareunia, and ocular migraines that were resistant to all other therapies.
RESULTS: In a short length of time the sympathomimetic amine therapy almost completely abrogated all of her symptoms and they have remained controlled while she continues on the drug.
CONCLUSIONS: This i…

It is widely believed that salt-dependent hypertension is induced and maintained by expansion of intravascular fluid volume resulting from excessive retention of sodium. The purpose of this brief article is to present a series of arguments in support of the thesis that volume overload per se does not raise the arterial blood pressure. Several investigators in the 1960s and 1970s reported that excessive retention of salt - regardless of cause - leads to sympathetic activation mediated by the effects of the Na ion on α(2)-adrenergic receptors located mostly in the brainstem. In recent years, the

Horner syndrome, in which ptosis, miosis, and anhidrosis occur concomitantly, can arise from injury to the sympathetic nerve pathways anywhere from the brain to the end organs. Incomplete Horner syndrome lacks the sign of anhidrosis. We present a case of incomplete Horner syndrome caused by internal carotid artery dissection and provide a road map of the cervical sympathetic nerves involved in Horner syndrome to explain its etiology. We also discuss the imaging of and therapy for internal carotid artery dissections.

Currently, augmentation of sympathetic nervous system function produced by cocaine is thought to be due primarily to stimulation of sympathetic centers in the brain (central effect) and to inhibition of catecholamine uptake into postganglionic sympathetic nerve terminals (peripheral effect). In this review of our work, we present the following evidence that cocaine-induced changes in cardiovascular function, particularly those that peak within 1 to 5 min after an i.v. bolus injection of the drug, are due to a peripheral effect of the drug: (1) In both dogs and cats, cocaine potentiates the tac…
