Assessing the Association Between Endoscopic Tattooing and Lymph Node Yield in Rectal Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Preoperative endoscopic tattooing is an effective tool for intraoperative tumor localization in colon cancer. Endoscopic tattooing in rectal cancer may have unidentified benefits on lymph node yield, making it easier for pathologists to identify nodes during histopathologic assessment. There remains concern that tattoo ink may alter anatomical planes, increasing surgical difficulty. METHODS: Retrospective chart reviews from 2016 to 2021 of n = 170 patients presenting with rectal cancer were divided into two groups: with (n = 79) and without (n = 91) endoscopic tattoos. Demograph…

A patient with combined corneal and ingrowing conjunctival tissue tattooing by micropigmentation method.

PURPOSE: This report describes the clinical efficacy of combined corneal and conjunctival micropigment tattooing for the treatment of a corneoconjunctival opacity. CASE SUMMARY: Combined corneal and conjunctival micropigment tattooing was performed on a 39-year-old man who had a cosmetic problem due to traumatic corneoconjunctival opacity. After removal of the corneal epithelium, a 30-gauge needle filled with dye was placed into the corneal stroma. The dye was injected into the stroma and conjunctiva. The patient was followed up for 24 months postoperatively. Although some of the dye dissipat…

Transmission of hepatitis C virus infection through tattooing and piercing: a critical review.

Tattoos and piercings are increasing, especially among youths, but the risk of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection from these practices has not been adequately assessed and there are conflicting findings in the literature. We evaluated the risk of HCV infection from tattooing and piercing using the Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) guidelines. Studies that specified the venue of tattooing and/or piercing showed no definitive evidence for an increased risk of HCV infection when tattoos and piercings were received in professional parlors. However, the risk of HCV infec…

Anemia, wasting syndrome, and tattooing: A clinical triad to suspect HIV in the community.

Anemia, wasting syndrome, and a history of tattooing form a rare and concerning triad observed in cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Although the overall prevalence of HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) has decreased globally, there is an alarming rise in the risk of transmission linked to unregulated or unlicensed tattooing practices. In this case report, we present the medical history of a man in his 30s, who recently tested positive for HIV-1 antibodies. Upon presentation, he exhibited multiple concerning symptoms, including watery diarrhea, fever, and a signi…

Clinical Presentations of Granulomatous Skin Reactions Following Tattooing and Cosmetic Micropigmentation: A Systematic Review.

Tattooing and cosmetic micropigmentation are widely practiced procedures that are usually considered safe, but they can cause delayed granulomatous reactions and can comprise more than localized foreign-body reactions. This review synthesizes available evidence on granulomatous cutaneous reactions following tattooing and cosmetic micropigmentation, focusing on clinical presentation, histopathology, systemic associations, treatments, and outcomes. Across the included studies, granulomatous reactions occurred commonly with black and red pigments and presented as papular or nodular lesions with v…

Robot‑assisted resection of a rare bladder tumor facilitated by perioperative bladder wall tattooing.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) of the bladder are rare, with a limited number of cases reported in the literature. Complete resection with negative margins is essential to reduce the risk of recurrence, while bladder function preservation is also crucial for the patient. This study describes a 56‑year‑old patient with a bladder dome IMT managed using robot‑assisted partial cystectomy facili‑ tated by perioperative cystoscopic tattooing to precisely demarcate the tumor margins. The procedure began with cystoscopic tattooing of the lesion using Black Eye dye, followed by robotic rese…

Corneal tattooing to mask subsequent opacification after amniotic membrane grafting for stromal corneal ulcer.

PURPOSE: We aimed to report on the cosmetic efficacy of corneal tattooing using India ink for resolving corneal opacities resulting from amniotic membrane grafting carried out to promote corneal wound healing in stromal corneal ulcers. METHODS: Amniotic membrane grafting of corneal ulcers was carried out in three patients. After corneal re-epithelialization, a 30-gauge needle filled with India ink was placed into the amniotic membrane space located between the regenerated corneal epithelium and the stromal bed. The ink was then carefully injected. RESULTS: The cornea was successfully stained…

Tattoo pigment agglomerates measured in skin biopsies by computerised light microscopy: Study of 161 patients with adverse reactions in black and red tattoos.

BACKGROUND: Black tattoo reactions are suggested to be foreign body reactions manifested as papulo-nodular inflammation that is associated with active sarcoidosis. AIM: To study the morphology of black and red pigment agglomerates in skin biopsies from tattoo reactions, referenced to clinical diagnoses. METHOD: Agglomerate count, area, width, height, circumference and circularity were measured in 161 patients by light microscopy (Olympus BX51™); 161 unstained skin biopsies from 64 black tattoo reactions and 97 reactions in red tattoos with allergy. Images (Jenoptic Gryphax RGB camera) were t

Ultrasound guided tattooing of axillary lymph nodes in breast cancer patients prior to neoadjuvant therapy, and identification of tattooed nodes at the time of surgery.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer patients with lymph node (LN) metastases at diagnosis often undergo neoadjuvant therapy (NAT). Identification of a LN which regressed after NAT remains a challenge. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate marking of involved nodes by tattooing with carbon suspension, and identifying these nodes during surgery. METHODS: A small amount (0.2-0.5 ml) of carbon suspension was injected into one or two axillary LNs under ultrasound guidance at the time of LN biopsy or before or shortly after starting NAT for LN positive breast cancer. During surgery an attempt was made to identify and remo…
