Predicting range expansion of three tropical fruit flies and risks to pome and stone fruit production in temperate regions.

Human activities and climate change are driving the northward expansion of invasive fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae), posing increasing threats to temperate fruit production. Here, we combine the MaxEnt model with direct field observations to assess the potential range expansion of three tephritid species-Bactrocera dorsalis, Zeugodacus tau, and Z. cucurbitae-under climate change scenarios through 2060, and to evaluate the associated risks to temperate fruit production. Model projections indicate that the suitable habitat area for all three species will expand significantly in the future and

Retrospective screening reveals the rare occurrence of zoonotic Strongyloides stercoralis in dogs from temperate Australia, 2014-2024.

Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal nematode capable of infecting humans and dogs. Occurrence in dogs from temperate, traditionally non-endemic regions remains poorly characterized, often due to the absence of accessible veterinary diagnostic tests. Recent reports of infections from temperate metropolitan areas have raised concerns about the extent of S. stercoralis prevalence in dogs in these regions. This study investigated the presence of S. stercoralis DNA in canine faecal samples from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, using a real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) targeting the 18S rR

Vector Competence for West Nile Virus Lineage 1 and 2: Temperature Dependency in Temperate Culex pipiens Mosquitoes.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne pathogen predominantly transmitted by Culex mosquitoes. Although birds are the primary hosts, other vertebrates, such as humans and horses, can also be affected. WNV incidence is increasing globally, expanding to northerly latitudes. This study investigated the vector competence of UK Culex pipiens exposed to WNV lineage 1 (Lin1) and lineage 2 (Lin2) at temperatures frequently experienced during northern European summers. Colonised Cx. pipiens exposed to blood meals containing WNV Lin1 and Lin2 were maintained at 20 °C or 25 °C and sampled at 7, 14, an

Accidental hypothermia in emergency care: multifactorial triage-based prediction of early critical outcomes in a temperate-climate cohort.

BACKGROUND: Accidental hypothermia, defined by a core temperature <35 °C destabilizes metabolism, ventilation, and circulation, precipitating malignant arrhythmias or cardiac arrest. We characterized such patients in a Hungarian emergency department and sought early predictors of death or intensive care requirement. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort (2020-2024) at Semmelweis University, adults with measured tympanic temperature <35 °C were identified. Demographics and Hungarian Emergency Triage System categories were recorded. Severity was graded based on the thresholds of Swiss staging a

Inhibition mechanism of testis-expressed gene 14 (TEX14) in cytokinetic abscission: Well-tempered metadynamics simulation studies.

Cytokinesis requires a apoptosis-linked gene 2 interacting protein X (ALIX) and a 55 kDa midbody centrosomal protein (CEP55) to activate the cell abscission in somatic cells. However, in germ cells, CEP55 forms intercellular bridges with testis-expressed gene 14 (TEX14), which blocks the cell abscission. These intercellular bridges play important roles in the synchronization of the germ cells and facilitate the coordinated passage of organelles and molecules between germ cells. If TEX14 is intentionally removed, intercellular bridges are disrupted, leading to sterility. Hence, a deeper underst

Mechanisms underlying soil microbial regulation of available phosphorus in a temperate forest exposed to long-term nitrogen addition.

With exogenous nitrogen (N) input into soil, phosphorus (P) could become a limiting nutrient for plant growth. Soil microbes play a crucial role in regulating soil P cycle and availability. P functional genes, further, regulate soil P availability. It is unclear how the addition of N in different chemical forms and rates influences the composition of soil microbes associated with P cycling and the abundance of P functional genes. A long-term experiment of N addition in three chemical forms with two levels in a temperate forest was performed to reveal the influences and the underlying mechanism

Allergic sensitization pattern as a marker of bronchial hyperresponsiveness in allergic rhinitis patients living in temperate continental climate zone.

BACKGROUND: Bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) is a key feature of asthma, but it may also appear in allergic rhinitis. The type of allergen, as well as regional characteristics, play an important role in the development of BHR. The aim of our study was to analyze allergen sensitization patterns and the factors that affect BHR in allergic rhinitis patients living in temperate continental climate zone. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed allergic rhinitis patients from Eastern Slovakia who underwent skin-prick tests to aeroallergens, spirometry, histamine and methacholine bronchial p

Responses of Outdoor Housed Dairy Cows to Shade Access during the Prepartum Period under Temperate Summer Conditions.

Cows are affected by environmental factors associated with warm weather conditions; however, little is known about the effect of shade access especially during the prepartum period of dairy cows in temperate regions. This study assessed the effect of shade on the behavior (lying, rumination, feeding, and drinking), body fat mobilization, and health status of outdoor-housed dairy cows during the prepartum period under temperate summer conditions. During the 3 weeks prior to calving, 24 multiparous Holstein cows were grouped (4 cows/group) and assigned to either an open corral without shade or w

Assessing the relevant time frame for temperature acclimation of leaf dark respiration: A test with 10 boreal and temperate species.

Plants often adjust their leaf mitochondrial ("dark") respiration (Rd ) measured at a standardized temperature such as 20°C (R20 ) downward after experiencing warmer temperatures and upward after experiencing cooler temperatures. These responses may help leaves maintain advantageous photosynthetic capacity and/or be a response to recent photosynthate accumulation, and can occur within days after a change in thermal regime. It is not clear, however, how the sensitivity and magnitude of this response change over time, or which time period prior to a given measurement best predicts R20 . Nor is i

Prevalence and risk factors of gastrointestinal nematode infestation of horses, donkeys and mules in tropical, dry and temperate regions in Mexico.

The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) in horses, donkeys and mules and its associations with age, sex and climatic factors (derived from satellite data) to identify the potential risk factors of different climate regions in four Mexican states. From May 2017 to April 2018, a total of 560 farm owners or managers answered the questionnaire, and the data were used to establish three Köppen climate classes (tropical, dry, temperate). The overall prevalence of GIN parasites in equines was 77.9% (436 out of 560). The highest percentage of GIN was

Understanding the role of temporal variation of environmental variables in predicting Aedes aegypti oviposition activity in a temperate region of Argentina.

Environmental variables related to vegetation and weather are some of the most influential factors that impacting Aedes (Stegomya) aegypti, a mosquito vector of dengue, chikungunya and Zika viruses. In this paper, we aim to develop temporal predictive models for Ae. aegypti oviposition activity utilizing vegetation and meteorological variables as predictors in Córdoba city (Argentina). Eggs were collected using ovitraps placed throughout the city from 2009 to 2012 that were replaced weekly. Temporal generalized linear mixed models were developed with negative binomial distributions of errors t

Cell grazing and Haemonchus contortus control in sheep: lessons from a two-year study in temperate Western Europe.

Managing infections of sheep with anthelmintic resistant gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) is a major challenge for sheep producers in Western Europe. New methods of grazing management have been poorly explored as a component of an integrated and sustainable control of these parasites. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of two different types of grazing systems of sheep (intensive cell grazing versus conventional rotational grazing) on GIN infections over two years in a farm located in a temperate environment of Western France. When considering the whole study, the

The effect of temperate or tropical pasture grazing state and grain-based concentrate allocation on dairy cattle production and behavior.

Grain-based concentrate (GBC) supplement is of high cost to dairy farmers as a feed source as opposed to grazed pasture. Milk production response to GBC is affected by the composition and nutritive value of the remainder of the diet, animal factors, and interactions between forage type and level of GBC. In grazing systems, dairy cattle encounter contrasting pasture states, primarily because the social structure of the herd affects the timing of when each animal accesses a paddock after milking as a result of a relatively consistent cow milking order. However, the effect of feed management, nam

Pulsed resources at tundra breeding sites affect winter irruptions at temperate latitudes of a top predator, the snowy owl.

Irruptive migration is mostly observed in species specialized on pulsed resources and is thought to be a response to unpredictable changes in food supply. We assessed two alternative hypotheses to explain the periodic winter irruptions of snowy owls Bubo scandiacus every 3-5 years in temperate North America: (a) the lack-of-food hypothesis, which states that a crash in small mammal abundance on the Arctic breeding grounds forces owls to move out of the tundra massively to search for food in winter; (b) the breeding-success hypothesis, which states that high abundance of tundra small mammals du

Desiccation as a mitigation tool to manage biofouling risks: trials on temperate taxa to elucidate factors influencing mortality rates.

The desiccation tolerance of biofouling taxa (adults and early life-stages) was determined under both controlled and 'realistic' field conditions. Adults of the ascidian Ciona spp. died within 24 h. Mortality in the adult blue mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis occurred within 11 d under controlled conditions, compared with 7 d when held outside. The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas was the most desiccation-tolerant taxon tested (up to 34 d under controlled conditions). Biofouling orientated to direct sunlight showed faster mortality rates for all the taxa tested. Mortality in Mytilus juveniles

Whole-genome sequencing of a quarter-century melioidosis outbreak in temperate Australia uncovers a region of low-prevalence endemicity.

Melioidosis, caused by the highly recombinogenic bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei, is a disease with high mortality. Tracing the origin of melioidosis outbreaks and understanding how the bacterium spreads and persists in the environment are essential to protecting public and veterinary health and reducing mortality associated with outbreaks. We used whole-genome sequencing to compare isolates from a historical quarter-century outbreak that occurred between 1966 and 1991 in the Avon Valley, Western Australia, a region far outside the known range of B. pseudomallei endemicity. All Avon Valley

A metagenomic approach to characterize temperate bacteriophage populations from Cystic Fibrosis and non-Cystic Fibrosis bronchiectasis patients.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa), normally a soil commensal, is an important opportunistic pathogen in Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and non-Cystic Fibrosis Bronchiectasis (nCFBR). Persistent infection correlates with accelerated decline in lung function and early mortality. The horizontal transfer of DNA by temperate bacteriophages can add gene function and selective advantages to their bacterial host within the constrained environment of the lower lung. In this study, we chemically induce temperate bacteriophages from clonal cultures of Pa and identify their mixed viral communities employing metagenomic a

Intensive rotational grazing assists control of gastrointestinal nematodosis of sheep in a cool temperate environment with summer-dominant rainfall.

While rotational grazing methods have an accepted role in the management of gastrointestinal nematodosis (GIN) of small ruminants in humid tropical regions, their efficacy and application in cool temperate regions is more controversial. This study evaluated GIN over 2 years in three classes of fine wool Merino sheep (lambs, hoggets and ewes) under three different sheep management systems in a cool tableland environment near Armidale NSW Australia (950m altitude, 30 degrees 31'S, 151 degrees 39'E). The management systems were High input (HI) with high fertiliser inputs, a target of 100% sown pa
