Lung adenocarcinoma and its thyroid metastasis characterized on fine-needle aspirates by cytomorphology, immunocytochemistry, and next-generation sequencing.

Lung adenocarcinoma and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) share a number of microscopic and immunophenotypical features. Thus, patients presenting with thyroid and lung synchronous neoplasms may be difficult on fine-needle aspiration (FNA) samples to define the site of origin of the malignancy. In the case reported here, inherent to a 57-years-old man presenting with a right lung mass and a large (44 mm) thyroid nodule, an integrated cytological, immunocytochemical and molecular approach enabled to clarify the primary nature of the neoplasm. FNA cytology showed in both sites papillary structur

Ossifying fibromyxoid tumor metastatic to the thyroid: a case report and review of the literature.

Ossifying fibromyxoid tumors are rare soft-tissue neoplasms, usually with an indolent course. However, atypical/malignant variants have been described, showing either local recurrence after complete excision or metastasis to the lungs, mediastinum, adrenals, or soft tissue. We report the case of an ossifying fibromyxoid tumor of the left ankle that metastasized to the lung and thyroid gland 12 years after the initial diagnosis and surgical treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of this neoplasm metastasizing to the thyroid gland.

Thyroid nodularity in children.

Of 5,179 school children surveyed in Utah, Nevada, and Arizona for thyroid abnormalities because of possible exposure to radiation from fallout, nodularity of the thyroid was found in 98 (1.8%). In 34, the nodularity represented lobulation associated with adolescent goiter, and in 31, thyroiditis. Two malignant neoplasms were found. In a normal childhood population in which nodularity is incidentally discovered on physical examination, the risk of nodularity being malignant is approximately 2%. Factors that favor exploration of thyroid nodules in children are discreteness, growth of the mass,

Intrathyroidal thymic carcinoma exhibiting neuroendocrine differentiation: Case report with cytomorphology, immunocytochemistry, and review of the literature focusing on cytology.

Intrathyroidal thymic carcinoma is a malignant epithelial tumor of the thyroid gland with thymic epithelial differentiation; it is the malignant counterpart of ectopic thymoma of the thyroid gland and histologically resembles thymic carcinoma. Given its favorable prognostic course, preoperative cytological diagnosis is important to distinguish this neoplasm from other more aggressive thyroid neoplasms that can have similar or overlapping cytomorphological features. However, there is little information about the cytology of this disease available in the literature, even in the latest fourth edi…

Effect of somatostatin on adenylate cyclase activity in normal and neoplastic thyroid tissue.

Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and other substances increase adenylate cyclase (AC) activity and growth of normal and neoplastic thyroid tissue. Factors that inhibit cAMP may provide targeted therapy to tumors dependent on cAMP for growth. Somatostatin has been reported to inhibit the growth of gastrinomas and carcinoid tumors. We therefore studied the effects of somatostatin on basal, TSH, pertussis toxin, and forskolin stimulated adenylate cyclase activity in normal and neoplastic thyroid tissue from 19 patients. Adenylate cyclase (AC) activity was determined by the conversion of alpha 32

Follicular variant of papillary carcinoma arising from lingual thyroid.

Malignant transformation of ectopic lingual thyroid tissue is an uncommon event; only 43 cases have been reported in the literature. Only 10 of these cases were papillary carcinomas, in contrast to normal thyroid gland neoplasms, of which papillary tumors form the predominant group. We present a case of a follicular variant of papillary carcinoma originating from the lingual thyroid, along with a review of the literature. Our patient was treated with surgical excision followed by (131)I therapy. To date, only 2 other cases of a follicular variant of lingual thyroid tumor have been reported.

An ultrastructural cytochemical stain specific for neuroendocrine neoplasms.

Previous work from our laboratory has indicated that the uranaffin reaction, when run under specific conditions, will stain neurosecretory granules. In this ultrastructural cytochemical study, we analyzed the granule-staining properties of 13 normal, 10 abnormal (non-neoplastic), and 138 neoplastic tissues in an attempt to evaluate the specificity of the uranaffin reaction for diagnostic purposes when compared with routinely processed specimens. For the uranaffin reaction, previously fixed tissue stored in buffer was rinsed with 0.9% NaCl and reacted with a 4% aqueous solution of uranyl acetat

Carcinogenic effect of N-bis(2-hydroxypropyl)nitrosamine by a single administration in rats.

The carcinogenic effect of a single intraperitoneal injection of N-bis)2-hydroxypropyl)nitrosamine (BHP) was studied in male Wistar rats. Lung tumors (adenomas and adenocarcinomas) had the highest incidence (100%). Fewer neoplasms were induced in the thyroid (adenomas and adenocarcinomas, 36%), kidney (renal cell carcinomas, 8%), and the sigmoid colon (adenomas and adenocarcinomas, 9%). No pancreatic neoplasms were found.

Solid papillary thyroid carcinoma with Hashimoto's thyroiditis: description of a further case with challenging cytological features.

Solid papillary thyroid carcinoma (SV-PTC) is a rare variant which is mainly observed in young patients with a history of exposure to ionising radiations. Neoplasms belonging to such category generally carry RET-PTC (REarranged during Transfection- Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma) fusions and seem to have a slightly worse prognosis with respect to classical and follicular variants of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), though consistent prognostic and survival data are scarce. SV-PTC should be differentiated from trabecular-insular poorly differentiated thyroid carcinomas, which occur in a differen

Ovarian metastasis from thyroid carcinoma 12 years after partial thyroidectomy mimicking struma ovarii: report of a case.

A 29-year-old woman experienced abdominal swelling 12 years after undergoing partial thyroidectomy for follicular carcinoma of the thyroid with vascular invasion and 6 months after a right cerebral tumor that had caused hemiplegia had been excised. Laparotomy disclosed a solid and cystic right ovarian tumor, 17 cm in greatest dimension, and a 12-cm tumor of the right adrenal gland. Microscopic examination showed a malignant tumor of the thyroid follicular type with frequent mitotic figures; other teratomatous elements were absent. Because of the interval since the thyroid cancer, the diagnosis

Histopathological patterns of thyroid lesions in a teaching health facility: an 11-year review.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid diseases vary geographically, with iodine deficiency being a major cause in Africa. These conditions range from congenital anomalies to acquired neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions. AIM: To establish baseline data on the frequency and patterns of thyroid lesions diagnosed in a teaching hospital's histopathology department over an 11-year period (2012-2022). METHODS: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted using slides and paraffin-embedded blocks of thyroidectomy specimens from January 2012 to December 2022. Clinical data including age, sex, and histological dia

Thyrolipomatosis: an inquisitive rare entity.

It is rare to find diffuse presence of mature adipose tissue inside thyroid gland which defines thyrolipomatosis. We report a case of a 32-year-old hyperthyroid female on suppression therapy since the past 2 years presenting with diffuse thyroid swelling. She underwent total thyroidectomy and the histopathology revealed features of thyrolipomatosis. As fat containing lesions of thyroid include not only non-neoplastic lesions but neoplasms also, including an occasional malignant one, rendering a correct diagnosis is essential.

Simultaneous ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone syndrome and adrenal metastasis of a medullary thyroid carcinoma causing paraneoplastic Cushing's syndrome.

Medullary thyroid carcinomas (MTC) constitute about 5 to 7 % of thyroid neoplasms. They originate from parafollicular C-cells which can secrete adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and/or corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) in abnormally high concentrations, potentially causing paraneoplastic Cushing's Syndrome (CS). We report on a 42-year-old male patient with a ten year history of metastatic medullary thyroid carcinoma suffering from paraneoplastic Cushing's Syndrome caused by ectopic hypersecretion of ACTH and a simultaneous Cortisol producing adrenal metastasis.

[Risk factors of malignancy in patients with fine needle aspiration biopsy results interpreted as "suspicious for follicular neoplasm"].

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: Approximately 10% of fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of thyroid nodules may be verified as "suspicious for follicular neoplasm"; this category involves follicular adenoma, follicular carcinoma, follicular variants of papillary carcinoma and subclass "suspicious for Hurthle cell neoplasm". At present, there is no diagnostic tool to discriminate between follicular adenoma and cancer. Most patients are required surgery to exclude malignant process. The aim: To define factors correlating with risk of malignancy in patients with FNAB of thyroid focal lesions and nodule

Childhood thyroid diseases around Chernobyl evaluated by ultrasound examination and fine needle aspiration cytology.

Screening by ultrasound examination and fine-needle aspiration cytological biopsy (FNA) was conducted in five regions in Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia to investigate the prevalence of childhood thyroid diseases around Chernobyl. Gomel, Zhitomir, Kiev, and the western area of Bryansk are the administrative regions where severe radioactive contamination occurred. The subjects from Mogilev, where contamination was relatively low, served as controls. Among 55,054 subjects (26,406 boys and 28,648 girls), the prevalence of ultrasonographic thyroid abnormalities such as nodule, cyst, and abnormal echo

Immunoperoxidase study of uncommon parathyroid tumors. Report of two cases of nonfunctioning parathyroid carcinoma and one intrathyroid parathyroid tumor-producing amyloid.

Nonfunctioning carcinomas of the parathyroid gland are rare and difficult to diagnose. They are often confused with thyroid tumors or with metastasis from other sites. We report two cases of nonfunctioning parathyroid carcinomas; one was originally diagnosed as follicular carcinoma of the thyroid gland. The immunohistochemical demonstration of parathormone in the tumor cells established the parathyroid origin of these neoplasms. An intrathyroid parathyroid tumor, associated with large amounts of interstitial amyloid, mimicking medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, in a patient with primary hyper

TGF-beta-induced apoptosis in human thyrocytes is mediated by p27kip1 reduction and is overridden in neoplastic thyrocytes by NF-kappaB activation.

Millions of people worldwide suffer goiter, a proliferative disease of the follicular cells of the thyroid that may become neoplastic. Thyroid neoplasms have low proliferative index, low apoptotic index and a high incidence of metastasis. TGF-beta is overexpressed in thyroid follicular tumor cells. To investigate the role of TGF-beta in thyroid tumor progression, we established cultures of human thyrocytes from different proliferative pathologies (Grave's disease, multinodular goiter, follicular adenoma, papillary carcinoma), lymph node metastasis, and a normal thyroid sample. All cultures mai…

Metastasis of lung adenocarcinoma to follicular thyroid carcinoma combined with papillary thyroid carcinoma in the contralateral lobe: A case report.

Cancer-to-cancer metastasis is uncommon. The present study describes a case in which lung adenocarcinoma (LC) metastasized to follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC). A 46-year-old Chinese woman exhibited a solid carcinoma (~60×40 mm) that nearly replaced the entire thyroid tissue of the left lobe, along with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) in the right lobe. The initial clinical manifestation appeared as a thyroid neoplasm. Histological examination revealed two admixed components within the neoplasm of the left lobe: FTC and an adenocarcinoma component. The mutational profile of LC was analyzed
