Visfatin level in children and adolescents with autoimmune thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to assess the levels of visfatin in children and adolescents with autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) and its relationship with disease-related variables. METHODS: The study included 84 children and adolescents with AIT and 84 healthy subjects. Measurements of fasting glucose, insulin, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxin (FT4), antithyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) and antithyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) were completed, with assessment of visfatin levels. RESULTS: Overt hypothyroidism was diagnosed in 58 cases, while subclinical hypothyroidism was diagnose

High salt intake does not exacerbate murine autoimmune thyroiditis.

Recent studies have shown that high salt (HS) intake exacerbates experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis and have raised the possibility that a HS diet may comprise a risk factor for autoimmune diseases in general. In this report, we have examined whether a HS diet regimen could exacerbate murine autoimmune thyroiditis, including spontaneous autoimmune thyroiditis (SAT) in non-obese diabetic (NOD.H2(h4)) mice, experimental autoimmune thyroiditis (EAT) in C57BL/6J mice challenged with thyroglobulin (Tg) and EAT in CBA/J mice challenged with the Tg peptide (2549-2560). The physiological impact

Experimental autoimmune thyroiditis in human parvovirus B19 transgenic mice.

Viral infection is implicated as a cause of autoimmune diseases. Whereas its role in Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) remains undefined, recent studies suggested a link between human parvovirus B19 (B19) infection and HT. We tested such possibility by using B19 nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) transgenic C57BL/6 mice, which harbor nonpermissive genetic background (H-2(b)). Mice were immunized with either thyroglobulin (Tg) or saline. No thyroiditis developed in saline-treated mice and Tg-immunized males regardless of the presence or absence of NS1. In contrast, thyroiditis was induced by Tg immunizat

Interleukin-10 promotes resolution of granulomatous experimental autoimmune thyroiditis.

Granulomatous experimental autoimmune thyroiditis (G-EAT) is induced by mouse thyroglobulin-sensitized splenocytes activated in vitro with mouse thyroglobulin and interleukin (IL)-12. Thyroid lesions reach maximal severity 20 days after cell transfer, and inflammation either resolves or progresses to fibrosis by day 60 depending on the extent of thyroid damage at day 20. Depletion of CD8(+) T cells inhibits G-EAT resolution. Our previous studies indicated that IL-10 was generally higher in G-EAT thyroids that resolved. Using both wild-type and IL-10(-/-) CBA/J mice, this study was undertaken t

[Functional status of neutrophils in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis].

The paper discusses the functional activity of peripheral neutrophilic granulocytes in 25 patients with autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT). The course of the latter is shown to be attended by a reduction in serum lactoferrin levels with simultaneous increases in the production of active oxygen forms and in the blood count of CD95+ granulocytes.

Prevalence of celiac disease in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis.

AIM: Many autoimmune disorders are associated to celiac disease (CD) but the association with autoimmune thyroiditis has been more frequently documented; this is in part explained by a shared immunogenetic make-up, and in part caused to time gluten-exposition, as suggested by the significant correlation observed in celiac patients between the increase occurrence of autoimmune diseases and the length of exposure to gluten. The aim of this study was to establish the prevalence of celiac disease in a group of subjects with autoimmune thyroiditis newly diagnosed on the basis of antibodies anti-per

Autoimmune thyroiditis and Helicobacter pylori--is there a connection?

OBJECTIVES: In this study we examined the anti-Helicobacter pylori (anti-H. pylori) antibodies in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis, with and without different polyglandular involvement, and in healthy controls. MATERIAL & METHODS: Patients with autoimmune thyroiditis (AT) were divided into three groups: Group A: 23 patients with isolated AT, Group B: 30 patients with AT as a part of polyglandular activation of autoimmunity, and Group C: 7 patients with AT as a part of autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type II. Thirty healthy individuals served as controls (Group D). Anti-H. pylori antibod

Brain perfusion abnormalities in patients with euthyroid autoimmune thyroiditis.

PURPOSE: Brain perfusion abnormalities have recently been demonstrated by single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in rare cases of severe Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) encephalopathy; moreover, some degree of subtle central nervous system (CNS) involvement has been hypothesised in HT, but no direct evidence has been provided so far. The aim of this study was to assess cortical brain perfusion in patients with euthyroid HT without any clinical evidence of CNS involvement by means of 99mTc-ECD brain SPECT. Sixteen adult patients with HT entered this study following informed consent. M

[A pregnant woman with autoimmune thyroiditis and recurrent goiter].

A 27-year-old woman was first referred at the age of 14 with cosmetic complaints due to an echographically diffuse, euthyroid goitre. Tests for antibodies against thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin were positive. Thyroid-suppression therapy with levothyroxine resulted in regression of the goitre. At the age of 26 there was a transitory recurrence of the goitre during a pregnancy, during which time the thyroid peroxidase antibodies became strongly positive. Six months post partum the goitre recurred again, accompanied by pain in the throat and fever. The C-reactive protein level was strongly

Decreased salivary gland function in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: It has been speculated that impaired salivary flow contributes to autoimmune thyroiditis (chronic thyroiditis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis). To test this hypothesis, salivary function was measured by quantitative salivary scintigraphy in autoimmune thyroiditis patients, as well as in age- and gender-matched controls for comparison. METHODOLOGY: One hundred and twenty patients with an autoimmune thyroiditis history of more than 10 years each and 36 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. All the 120 autoimmune thyroiditis patients had good blood sugar control. None had autono

[Phytoconcentrates "dzherelo" and "lizorm" in therapy of autoimmune thyroiditis].

Treatment of patients with autoimmune thyroiditis with phytoconcentrates dzherelo and lizorm has been shown to improve the patients general well-being, alleviate gross manifestations of the condition, impede the development of the autoimmune process. The above therapy is well-tolerated, has no hepato-/nephrotoxic effect, causes no functional/structural disturbances, and does not affect the sizes of the thyroid gland. The phytoconcentrates dzherelo and lizorm can be recommended as treatment of autoimmune thyroiditis (euthyroid state, mild hypothyroisis, in those settings where activity of the a

Induction of experimental autoimmune thyroiditis in IL-12-/- mice.

Granulomatous experimental autoimmune thyroiditis (G-EAT) is induced by transfer of mouse thyroglobulin (MTg)-sensitized spleen cells activated in vitro with MTg and anti-IL-2R or MTg and IL-12. Previous work suggested that IL-12 was required in vitro for development of G-EAT. To determine whether IL-12 was also required during the induction and/or effector phases, DBA/1 mice with a disrupted IL-12-P40 gene (IL-12(-/-)) were used for EAT induction. Cells from MTg-sensitized IL12(-/-) donors activated in vitro by MTg or MTg and anti-IL2R induced severe EAT in recipient mice. Compared with effec

Iodine-induced autoimmune thyroiditis in NOD-H-2h4 mice.

Excess iodine ingestion has been implicated in induction and exacerbation of autoimmune thyroiditis in human populations and animal models. We studied the time course and sex-related differences in iodine-induced autoimmune thyroiditis in NOD-H-2h4 mice. This strain, derived from a cross of NOD with B10.A(4R), spontaneously develops autoimmune thyroiditis but not diabetes. NOD-H-2h4 mice were given either plain water or water with 0.05% iodine for 8 weeks. Approximately 54% of female and 70% of male iodine-treated mice developed thyroid lesions, whereas only 1 of 20 control animals had thyroid

Characterization of autoimmune thyroiditis in MRL-lpr/lpr mice.

MRL-lpr/lpr mice are genetically predisposed to develop a systemic lupus erythematosus-like syndrome that is clinically very similar to the human disease. The results presented here demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, that MRL-lpr/lpr mice also develop thyroiditis as part of their systemic autoimmune disorder. The thyroid gland was infiltrated by immunocomponent cells with defined lymphoid follicular centers and extensive interstitial lymphocytes dispersed throughout the thyroid epithelium. All the diseased mice were hypothyroid with reduced, relative levels of thyroid hormone (f
