Disentangling the effects of self-control and the use of tobacco and cannabis on violence perpetration from childhood to early adulthood.

Associations among self-control, substance use (e.g., tobacco and cannabis use), and violence perpetration have been documented during the adolescent years, but the direction of these associations is not well understood. Using five assessments (covering 9 years) from a prospective-longitudinal study, we examined self-control as a precursor and subsequent mechanism of associations between adolescent substance use and physical violence perpetration. Data came from a large, ethnically diverse sample (n = 1,056). Youth reported their self-control at ages 11, 13, 15, 17, and 20; and their tobacco a

Effectiveness of Medical Student Counseling for Hospitalized Patients Addicted to Tobacco (MS-CHAT): a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Low-middle-income countries face an enormous burden of tobacco-related illnesses. Counseling for tobacco cessation increases the chance of achieving quit outcomes, yet it remains underutilized in healthcare settings. OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypothesis that utilizing trained medical students to counsel hospitalized patients who use tobacco will lead to an increase in patient quit rates, while also improving medical student knowledge regarding smoking cessation counseling. DESIGN: Investigator-initiated, two-armed, multicenter randomized controlled trial conducted in three medical

A Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial of Intensive Group Therapy for Tobacco Treatment in HIV-Infected Cigarette Smokers.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use has emerged as the leading killer of persons living with HIV (PLWH) in the United States. Little is known about the efficacy of tobacco treatment strategies in PLWH. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial comparing Positively Smoke Free (PSF), an intensive group therapy intervention targeting HIV-infected smokers, to brief advice to quit. All participants were offered a 12-week supply of nicotine patches. METHODS: A cohort of 450 PLWH smokers, recruited from HIV-care centers in the Bronx, New York, and Washington, DC, were randomized 1:1 into the PSF or brief advice to q

Virtual reality cue exposure for the relapse prevention of tobacco consumption: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Successful interventions have been developed for smoking cessation, but the success of smoking relapse prevention interventions has been limited. In particular, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) has been hampered by a high relapse rate. Because relapses can be due to the presence of conditions associated with tobacco consumption (such as drinking in bars with friends), virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) can generate synthetic environments that represent risk situations for the patient in the context of relapse prevention. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate th

Assessment of prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke by cotinine in cord blood for the evaluation of smoking control policies in Spain.

BACKGROUND: Over the last few years a decreasing trend in smoking has occurred not only in the general population but also during pregnancy. Several countries have implemented laws requiring all enclosed workplace and public places to be free of second hand smoke (SHS). In Spain, legislation to reduce SHS was implemented in 2005. The present study examines the possible effect of this legislation on prenatal SHS exposure. METHODS: Mothers and newborns were recruited from 3 independent studies performed in Hospital del Mar (Barcelona) and approved by the local Ethics Committee: 415 participated

An as-1-like motif controls the level of expression of the gene for the pathogenesis-related protein 1a from tobacco.

Pathogenesis-related proteins of group 1 (PR-1) are strongly induced in plants by pathogen attack, exposure of the plants to (acetyl)salicylic acid (ASA, SA), and by developmental cues. Functional analysis of the PR-1a promoter identified a region of 139 bp (from -691 to -553) mediating expression of the GUS reporter gene in response to ASA. Inspection of this region revealed two TGACG elements reminiscent of activation sequence-1 (as-1). Recently, as-1 has been reported to be responsive to SA in the context of the CaMV 35S RNA promoter. To address the question of whether the as-1-like sequenc

Tobacco Cessation Interventions in Non-Respiratory Cancers: A Systematic Review With Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: Considering the high rates of persistent tobacco use, effective cessation interventions are needed for cancer patients and caregivers. Despite the need, there is a significant lack of research on tobacco cessation, especially for non-respiratory cancers (breast, prostate, colorectal, cervical, and bladder cancer). PURPOSE: The objective was to evaluate tobacco use and tobacco cessation interventions among patients and caregivers for non-respiratory cancers. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials assessing tobacco cessation interventions were identified. Five electronic databases w

Efficacy of a novel online integrated treatment for problem gambling and tobacco smoking: Results of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Problem gambling and tobacco use are highly comorbid among adults. However, there are few treatment frameworks that target both gambling and tobacco use simultaneously (i.e., an integrated approach), while also being accessible and evidence-based. The aim of this two-arm open label RCT was to examine the efficacy of an integrated online treatment for problem gambling and tobacco use. METHODS: A sample of 209 participants (Mage = 37.66, SD = 13.81; 62.2% female) from North America were randomized into one of two treatment conditions (integrated [n = 91] or gambling only [n

ADHD symptoms and smoking outcomes in a randomized controlled trial of varenicline for adolescent and young adult tobacco cessation.

BACKGROUND: Most adult daily smokers try their first cigarette during adolescence. Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adolescents is associated with increased risk for cigarette smoking. The impact of ADHD symptoms on smoking cessation among adolescents has been less well-studied. The present secondary data analysis from a clinical trial of varenicline examined ADHD symptoms as a moderator of smoking cessation in adolescents and young adults. METHODS: The double-blind, placebo-controlled trial included treatment-seeking daily cigarette smokers ages 14 - 21 (N = 157) randomized

Epidemiology of oral-cavity and oropharyngeal carcinomas: controlling a tobacco epidemic while a human papillomavirus epidemic emerges.

Although tobacco prevalence is declining in most developed countries, less developed countries are still experiencing an increase in tobacco use. Thus the future burden of oral-cavity and oropharyngeal cancers in less developed countries is expected to be heavy. The incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated oropharyngeal cancer is dramatically increasing in the United States and other developed countries, although trends in less developed countries are not clear at present. HPV vaccine compliance in the United States is low, although it continues to increase each year. Increasing the

Effects of tobacco smoking on neuropsychological function in schizophrenia in comparison to other psychiatric disorders and non-psychiatric controls.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Compared to the general population cigarette smoking prevalence is elevated in psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia (SZ), bipolar disorder (BD), and major depressive disorder (MDD). These disorders are also associated with neurocognitive impairments. Cigarette smoking is associated with improved cognition in SZ. The effects of smoking on cognition in BD and MDD are less well studied. METHODS: We used a cross-sectional design to study neuropsychological performance in these disorders as a function of smoking status. Subjects (N = 108) were SZ smokers (n = 32),

Democracy, gender equality, advanced civil rights, economic welfare, and equitable distribution of wealth are related to the success of tobacco control.

INTRODUCTION: It is well known that there are many social and economic factors influencing tobacco use. There are very few studies addressing these aspects of the issue. Nevertheless, smoking is closely related to social, economic, cultural, and political factors. This study aims to present the aspects of the MPOWER application that should be expanded in order to achieve a more effective tobacco control policy. METHODS: Thirty-one countries were included in this secondary data analysis. The smoking prevalence of the countries in 2020 and the changes in smoking prevalence between 2010 and 2020…

Association of bidi smoking and tobacco-use patterns with cancer risk in India: a multicentre unmatched case-control study (2024-2025).

BACKGROUND: Despite widespread use of bidi and other tobacco products in India, multicentre studies examining product-specific risks for cancer remain limited. This study aimed to determine association of bidi smoking and tobacco-use patterns (exclusive, dual, and poly-tobacco use) in relation to cancer risk, metastatic presentation and treatment modalities. METHODS: This hospital-based unmatched case-control study was conducted across eight tertiary-care centres in seven Indian states (2024-2025). Cases were recruited based on histologically confirmed cancer and controls were selected based

Exploring the association between school-based peer networks and smoking according to socioeconomic status and tobacco control context: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Whilst prevalence of youth smoking in middle and high income countries has decreased, inequality has prevailed. The introduction of legislation regulating tobacco use in public spaces varies across countries, impacting the tobacco control context. Thus reviewing our knowledge of how social networks may influence smoking differently within different contexts is required to facilitate the development of context-specific interventions. METHODS: The search, conducted on 31st May 2019, included the following smoking-related terms; schools, adolescents, peers and social networks. Inclus…

Mediating Effect of Tobacco Dependence on the Association Between Maternal Smoking During Pregnancy and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal smoking during pregnancy (MSDP) is a known risk factor for offspring developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore whether the increased COPD risk associated with MSDP could be attributed to tobacco dependence (TD). METHODS: This case-control study used data from the nationwide cross-sectional China Pulmonary Health study, with controls matched for age, sex, and smoking status. TD was defined as smoking within 30 minutes of waking, and the severity of TD was assessed using the
