Tooth eruption is an orientating action which migrates teeth coronally during life, even in bone or after occlusion contact is lost. The eruption pathway is due to bone resorption near the enamel crown and bone deposition around the cementum-covered roots. Due to their proximity to bone resorption and deposition, we hypothesize that the hard tissues enamel, dentine or cementum are important during eruption. In the present study, extracted human teeth were cut into enamel samples, enamel-dentine samples or dentine-cementum samples, and implanted into bone defects in rabbit tibia. Hematoxylin an

Occasionally, tooth fractures may demonstrate exaggerated pathologic root migration (PRM), often resulting in tooth loss. The early propagation of the root fracture may not be readily identifiable through clinical inspection and conventional radiographic imaging. Ultimately, increased root separation, isolated deep periodontal probing depth, and characteristic radiolucent changes may facilitate the diagnosis. This article describes 3 patients with unusual presentations of PRM in endodontically treated teeth restored with full-coverage crowns. One case illustrates the use of cone beam computed

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitating anterior edentulous areas can be a challenge for clinicians when there is a loss of hard and soft tissues. The authors present an innovative approach to manage these cases.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Case 1 involved a patient with a dental implant placed in the position of tooth no. 7 and a loss of soft tissues in the proximal areas. The authors bonded veneers to teeth nos. 6 and 8 and placed a screw-retained implant crown in the position of tooth no. 7. All of the prosthetic components had gingiva-shade and crown ceramics. Case 2 involved a patient with a dental implant in

The partial withdrawal of healthy gingiva not only affects the appearance but also can bring about some complaints when the healthy gingiva is stimulated for some reasons. The junctional epithelium of gingiva moves to the root with aging, and compared with the tooth crown, the tooth root which has lower mineral content is prone to decay. Thus, gingival recession could lead to the root surface decay and make the tooth sensitive. Gingival recession is not reversible. Once the healthy gingiva shrinked, the teeth could feel uncomfortable, food impaction appeared and the original restorations have …

A case-report of segmental underdevelopment of the alveolar process in the upper jaw of an eleven-year old girl is presented. At the site where the alveolar ridge was underdeveloped, two impacted malformed incisors were found. The malformed teeth had almost normal crowns, but the root-development had terminated 1-2 mm beyond the cementoenamel junction. The patient was treated by removal of the two malformed impacted teeth, followed by autotransplantation of the developing second premolar with the intention of inducing bone formation. The result was promising. After 3 years the alveolar process

Vital pulp therapy (VPT) has been increasingly advocated due to its advantages in preserving tooth vitality. While VPT is often successful, failures can occur, and traditional root canal therapy is often recommended following VPT failure. This case report provides an example of successful preservation of tooth vitality using coronal pulpotomy (CP), a more invasive type of VPT, after failure of partial pulpotomy (PP) that had been performed in a healthy 10-year-old boy. A mandibular right first molar with a diagnosis of reversible pulpitis was initially treated with PP, which included the use o

Two fractured maxillary central incisors were restored via the crown fragment reattachment technique with adhesive systems and composite resin material. A long-term successful outcome was achieved after 4 years of follow-up. The patient presented with fractured maxillary central incisors, and a comprehensive intraoral and radiographic examination revealed that both teeth had extended crown fractures with no pulpal exposure (Class II, Ellis and Davey). The tooth fragments were thoroughly cleaned and inspected before being repositioned. Both fragments were in excellent condition with almost no p

Dentigerous cysts are benign odontogenic cysts that are related to the crowns of permanent teeth. The lesion in this study was detected in a routine panoramic radiograph that revealed a well-defined osteolytic lesion that measured 2.5 cm in diameter, with the crown of the mandibular permanent second premolar displaced to the lower border of the mandible. The apex of the tooth was still open. The aim of this article was to report the case of a 7-year-old girl with a dentigerous cyst associated with the tooth buds of premolars. The therapeutic approach consisted of extraction of the primary mola

In the treatment of crown fractures, adhesive fragment reattachment provides a good alternative to other restorative techniques, offering several advantages. The present paper reports a case in which the treatment of a cervical crown fracture was accomplished by reattaching the tooth fragment with a flowable resin composite. Orthodontic root extrusion was performed with a modified Hawley appliance prior to fragment reattachment. The clinical and radiographic results after 2.5 years were successful.

A case of extensive internal resorption of the left mandibular first premolar in a 24 year old man is reported. The case presented with slight discolouration and mobility of the tooth. On radiological examination extensive internal resorption and a fracture line at the cemento enamel region was observed, separating the crown and root. The case was treated endodontically after surgical removal of the fractured fragment of the crown.

Tray tooth bleaching involves the use of carbamide peroxide in a custom-fitted tray to bleach teeth. One of the most difficult stains to bleach is tetracycline. This paper will present several different patient situations of tetracycline-stained teeth being bleached and will discuss the benefits and limitations of bleaching tetracycline-stained teeth. By providing the patient with realistic potential outcomes of bleaching, as well as the preservation of tooth structure and cost-benefit ratio of bleaching compared to veneers or crowns, the chance for a successful acceptance of the outcome is be

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the biological and technical outcomes of early and delayed placed single tooth implants after 10 years of follow-up.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty consecutive patients who needed a single tooth replacement in the anterior maxilla were included in this study. Ten implants were placed with an early placement protocol, that is, 4 weeks after tooth extraction, whereas the other 10 implants were placed with a conventional delayed placement protocol, for example, 12 weeks after tooth extraction. At the baseline and at the annual re-examinations, pain fr

An 8-year old boy was referred to the orthodontic department because of a fused tooth. The clinical and radiological examination showed that - besides the double tooth at the region of the 21 - there was a normal tooth 22 in eruption as well. Moreover a still impacted supernumerary tooth was present in the right upper front region. The treatment included the extraction of the fused tooth and an autotransplantation of the supernumerary tooth to the extraction site of the fused tooth. During the follow-up period the pulp showed a progressive obliteration starting at the crown level with a conser

BACKGROUND: Coronal resorption is a coronal degeneration of enamel and dentine in which ultimately the crown is replaced by vascular connective tissue through a defect in the enamel organ of an unerupted tooth. This is also known as pre-eruptive coronal resorption. However, the aetiology of resorption remains unclear.
CASE REPORT: A 13 years 7 months old Caucasian boy who attended an orthodontic consultation for anterior crossbite correction presented with idiopathic pre-eruptive coronal resorption of an erupted right maxillary permanent canine (FDI 13). Clinically, the enamel remaining on th

Fixed prosthetic restorations, particularly those made entirely of zirconia, are widely used in clinical dental practice for the restoration of natural teeth. Their success largely depends on the design of the tooth preparation, especially the type of finish line, as well as the restoration's ability to withstand occlusal forces during mastication. Over 12 months, a total of 21 extracted teeth were initially collected, from which six were selected for this study. To achieve the objective of the study, three teeth were prepared with a horizontal finish line (shoulder), and the remaining three w

This study investigates health, dental development, diet, and human-environment interactions in individuals buried in the necropolises of Pontecagnano (Campania, Italy, 7th-6th century BCE), using an integrated approach merging dental histomorphometry and calculus micro-residue analysis. The sample consists of 30 permanent teeth (canines, first and second molars) from 10 individuals. Histomorphometric analysis of dental thin sections allowed the estimation of crown formation times, initial cusp formation, crown completion, and enamel extension rates. The prevalence of Accentuated Lines, markin

Three-dimensional (3D)-printed guides have been used in endodontics to prepare a conservative access, locate calcified or missing canals, and perform precisive osteotomy in apicoectomy. Here, we present the treatment of a fusion tooth by combining 3D printing technology and endodontic intervention in a 10-year-old patient. The bifid crown of a maxillary right lateral incisor #7 had caused esthetic concerns and malocclusion. Clinical and radiographic examinations showed that #7 is fused with a supernumerary tooth with 2 independent root canals. The fusion involved the entire crown and the coron

AIM: The exact localization and analysis of displaced, retained or impacted teeth can rarely be achieved by common radiologic methods providing eccentric or occlusal images. The aim of this study was to evaluate transversal slice imaging (TSI) as a diagnostic alternative, keeping radiation exposure under consideration.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a pilot study, we simulated seven different canine positions in a phantom head. Each tooth position was visualized by transversal slice imaging and compared by several observers independently and blinded to computer tomography (CT) serving as the gold s
