OBJECTIVES: Erosive tooth wear (ETW) is a prevalent, irreversible condition; however, despite the availability of numerous anti-erosive dentifrices, heterogeneity among systematic reviews limits clear clinical guidance. This umbrella review synthesizes and critically appraises the highest-level secondary evidence on the effectiveness of anti-erosive dentifrices on enamel and dentin.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses was conducted following PRISMA 2020 and Joanna Briggs Institute guidance. Searches were performed in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Esthetic properties of additively manufactured (AM) zirconia can be enhanced by extrinsic staining, but data on its surface roughness (Ra) and stain durability under intraoral challenges remain limited.
PURPOSE: This in vitro study aimed to compare the Ra and stain durability of extrinsically stained AM zirconia with those of subtractively manufactured (SM) zirconia and lithium disilicate, following erosive, abrasive, and thermal challenges.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Disk-shaped specimens (Ø13×2 mm) were produced using an AM zirconia (INNI Cera BCM W1000, AM-ZR), an SM zirc

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) affects 15-25% of children and adolescents in the United States. The diagnosis of GERD in children is complex as reported symptoms or symptom profiles have been found to be unreliable. Frequently, the diagnosis must be confirmed by objective tests such as pH monitoring or histological evidence of esophagitis on an esophageal biopsy. Dental erosion has been shown to be associated with GERD as an atypical complication and has the potential to be a marker of GERD. The purposes of this study were to compare the frequency and patterns of dental ero

The extrinsic sources for erosion-causing acids are primarily acidic beverages and foodstuffs. Effervescent tablets also contain organic acids (e.g. citric, tartaric, malic) in order to form carbon dioxide by contact with water with the help of the carbonate salts of the tablets. To adequately inform patients about the possible erosive potential of effervescent tablets, this study was undertaken in order to investigate the erosive potential of effervescent tablets (ET), containing either a combination of vitamins and minerals or vitamins only, commercially available in Switzerland. This study aimed to investigate the surface zones of acidic fluoride-treated enamel. Human teeth were each divided into three or four enamel specimens that were treated for 10 min with solutions of 0.2 and 0.4% HF (pH 3.09 and 2.94), 1.74% SnF2 (pH 2.9), 0.68% TiF4 (pH 1.6) and 0.84% NaF (pH 4.5). Untreated specimens functioned as negative controls. The microstructure and elemental composition of the surface zones were studied by scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and nanospot-EDX following cross-sectional preparation usi

Dentine hypersensitivity (DH) is a common, painful dental condition with a multi-factorial aetiology. The hydrodynamic mechanism theory to explain dentine sensitivity also appears to fit DH: lesions exhibiting large numbers of open dentinal tubules at the surface and patent to the pulp. By definition, DH can only occur when dentine becomes exposed (lesion localisation) and tubules opened (lesion initiation), thus permitting increased fluid flow in tubules on stimulation. Erosion, particularly from dietary acids appears to play a dominant role in both processes. Toothbrushing with most toothpas

This article examines the case of a woman with hard dental tissue loss that was similar to perimolysis caused by bulimia nervosa; however, the patient's health history, signs and symptoms, and dietary habits refuted any eating disorder. All extrinsic causes and the majority of intrinsic causes were examined carefully and eliminated. The patient had undergone endometrial surgery 32 years earlier to remove a tumor, a procedure that was believed to be unrelated to the dental professionals' realm; however, a detailed patient history revealed severe pain associated with abdominal cramps that were i

BACKGROUND: The dental team often is confronted with the clinical appearance of erosion affecting the hard and soft oral tissues. An investigative process often is needed to determine the cause of such erosion, because factors other than eating disorders may be involved. The authors present a protocol that should be considered in the assessment of dental erosion. Guidelines provide direction for the clinician toward opening a dialogue with a patient when the suspected cause of erosion is an eating disorder.
TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: The authors review publications related to the causes of de

This case report chronicles the clinical presentation and unusual response to treatment of a patient with rapid gingival recession and dental erosion secondary to local cocaine application. The initial clinical diagnosis was necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis; only after several years of therapy did the patient voluntarily inform one of the therapists that cocaine had been regularly applied to the affected gingival sites. This case illustrates the importance of including cocaine application to gingival tissues in a differential diagnosis in cases of rapid gingival recession and dental erosio

OBJECTIVES: To compare the susceptibility of natural enamel on buccal and occlusal surfaces to erosion by assessing step-height changes.
METHODS: Twenty enamel samples were obtained from caries-free, unerupted human molars. Paired buccal and occlusal specimens (n = 10 each) were prepared from the same teeth and mounted in custom-designed cobalt-chrome moulds and randomly assigned to the groups. Samples underwent acid challenges using 0.3 wt. % citric acid (pH 2.7) for cumulative durations of 10, 20, 40, and 60 min. Surface changes were measured using white light profilometry and scanning elec

OBJECTIVES: Previous work has shown the effectiveness of a newly developed interproximal model to differentiate between the amount of remineralization caused by toothpastes used with or without a dual-phase gel treatment system containing calcium silicate, sodium phosphate salts and fluoride to repair acid-softened enamel. The aim of this study was to utilize the same interproximal model to identify how effective calcium silicate phosphate toothpastes are at reducing surface softening in the early stages of erosion. The model was also used to identify the effect of increasing the frequency of

Society's preoccupation with outward appearance and thinness has increased the incidence of both anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, two potentially threatening diseases. Unfortunately, it is difficult to obtain accurate statistics on these eating disorders. Those with an eating disorder are often unwilling to admit they have this disorder and are reluctant to seek help. Subsequently, eating disorders have become a serious concern for medical and dental professionals. Since dental professionals see patients on a regular basis, he/she may be the person to whom the eating disorder patient conf

The prevalence of eating disorders is increasing, as are the chances that one or more of your patients may be suffering from anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or a combination of these disorders (bulimarexia). Although the dental profession has focused attention on the related oral and dental pathoses that occur in this population, limited information is available in the area of intervention. Recognition of these individuals is only the first step. Should a patient be suspected of having any of these disorders, intervention is the next step, to actually link the patient to medical help. This

Bulimia is an eating disorder disease that presents difficulties in its diagnosis, primarily because of the secretive nature of the person with the disease. The disease is most common in young females, and there is an average of a 4-year delay between the onset of the disease and the patient's self-referral for treatment. Objective oral signs and symptoms of bulimia do exist and their presence can facilitate a diagnosis of bulimia during routine examination. The realization that five oral signs and symptoms of bulimia--enamel erosion, salivary gland enlargement, xerostomia, oral mucosal erythe

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between bone fragility of the mandibular inferior cortex and tooth loss in older adults by accounting for periodontal disease and bone metabolism markers.
RESEARCH DESIGN: A total of 177 subjects aged 77 years participated in this study. We counted the number of remaining teeth. The mandibular cortex condition was examined using the mandibular inferior cortex classification (MICC) on dental panoramic radiographs. The mandibular inferior cortex was detected on both sides of the mandible, distally from the mental foramen (C1,
