Multidisciplinary management of a tooth with severe root dilaceration and enamel hypoplasia: a case report.

Dental trauma in primary teeth can cause irreversible changes in the development of permanent tooth germs, including enamel hypoplasia, crown dilaceration, and root dilaceration. This article discusses multidisciplinary treatment of enamel hypoplasia and root dilaceration in the maxillary left central incisor of an 11-year-old girl. A 10-year follow-up is reported to demonstrate the long-term clinical outcomes. At the initial presentation, the patient's mother reported that the child had an accident at the age of 2 years, resulting in intrusive luxation of the primary maxillary left central in…

Association between hypodontia and Angles malocclusion.

This study was planned to determine the prevalence of hypodontia in permanent dentition and to test whether an association was present between hypodontia and Angle's malocclusion. The retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital, Karachi, and comprised record of all patients visiting the orthodontic clinics of the hospital from 2005 to 2015. Orthodontic records of 790(79%) subjects, including 189(23.9%) males and 601(76.1%) females, were reviewed. Their mean age was 17 ± 5.06 years. A tooth was considered missing if no evidence of tooth germ was observed on orthopantomograms a…

Replantation of a Iatrogenically Avulsed Mandibular Premolar Undergoing Orthodontic Therapy: A 5 Year Follow-Up.

The succedaneous permanent teeth develop in close proximity to primary teeth. They can get accidentally luxated or avulsed during the extraction of primary teeth. The purpose of this paper was to describe a case of a 14-year-old boy with an "iatrogenic avulsion" of an immature mandibular second premolar during the extraction of a primary mandibular second molar. The case was managed successfully with replantation technique within 30 minutes of extra oral period and followed up for 5 years. The replanted tooth remained clinically asymptomatic, showed continued root development and eruption and

Ultrastructural features of the dental follicle associated with formation of the tooth eruption pathway in the dog.

The dental follicle is a loose connective tissue layer that surrounds the developing and erupting tooth. The follicle is necessary for tooth eruption in dogs and specific cellular changes occur in the follicle at the onset of tooth eruption. In particular, within the coronal region of the follicle next to areas of subsequent bone resorption there is an increase in mononuclear cells which have the ultrastructure features of monocytes and contain specific granules characteristic of preosteoclasts. The follicle has an extensive microvasculature and monocytes are often seen adjacent to capillaries

Intrusion injuries of primary incisors. Part II: Sequelae affecting the intruded primary incisors.

Luxation injuries to incisors, including intrusive displacement, occur with a high frequency in the primary dentition. Intrusion injuries are associated with damage to the pulpal and periodontal structures and possible fracture of the alveolar bone. The pulpal tissue of the intruded tooth sustains a severe shock during displacement, which may be reflected later by sequelae ranging from mild discoloration to pulpal necrosis and infection. Disintegration of pulpal tissue may result in periapical tissue inflammation, which in turn may induce developmental disturbances in the germ of the permanent

[Dens in dente. Histological characteristics of an unusual case of dens in dente].

We describe a rare case of "dens in dente" in an accessory germ in central location of an anencephalic phoetus. Its characteristics of having enamel surrounding normal dentin and normal pulpar cavity, all of them surrounded by the unaffected accessory germ leads us to describe the term "dente in dente". Such alteration is not previously described.

[Is there more to hypodontia then missing teeth?].

Dental care professionals regularly see patients with hypodontia. Hypodontia can be acquired, for example through chemotherapy or radiation at a young age, but is hereditary in most patients. Due to an error (pathogenic variant) in one of the many genes that control odontogenesis, the formation of the tooth germ is disrupted at an early stage. The genes involved are not only crucial for tooth development, but they also play an important role in other physical processes. This article provides background information on hypodontia. Based on an inventory of gastrointestinal complaints in patients …

Eruption guidance of horizontally angulated, distally displaced mandibular second premolars: Three case reports.

AIM: An improperly positioned tooth germ can lead to tooth impaction, damage to adjacent teeth, and loss of arch integrity. This report describes three cases of eruption guidance of developing mandibular second premolars (MnP2) that were horizontally angulated and displaced to the distal side of the roots of the second primary molars. CASE REPORT: The primary second molars were extracted when root formation of the succeeding premolar began. Surgical exposure was performed to accelerate eruption. These two procedures led to spontaneous eruption of all premolars. In the last case, however, a di…

Developmental disturbances of permanent teeth following trauma to the primary dentition.

The topographic relationship of the apices of the primary teeth to the permanent tooth germs explains the potential for possible developmental disturbances of the permanent teeth after injuries to their predecessors. The anatomical, histologic and clinical aspects of permanent tooth malformation following trauma to the primary teeth are described. One hundred and fourteen children with originally 255 traumatized primary teeth have been re-examined (with an average period of 5.1 years after the trauma) to assess any developmental disturbances of the corresponding permanent teeth. Twenty-three p…

[The surgical-orthodontic classification of retained and dystopic teeth of the second dentition in dysostosis cleidocranialis].

Dysostosis cleidocranialis concerns both teeth and jaw and is characterized by supernumerary teeth, dentitio tarda, tooth impaction and eventually follicular cysts. The concept of treatment can be divided in two stages: 1. At the beginning of the delayed secondary dentition (dentitio tarda) the operative removal of the supernumerary tooth germs and 2. corresponding to the belated morphological development (dentitio tarda) the operative exposure of the impacted teeth of the secondary dentition. The first operation facilitates a morphological development and especially a vertical drift without a…

Various root abnormalities. Report of three cases.

Disturbances during morphodifferentiation of tooth germs are rare in the permanent dentition. Reasons for abnormalities are: trauma (fighting, falling, any sport activity) occurring during the eruption; mechanical blockage of the path of eruption by neoplasms; cysts; supernumerary teeth; therapeutic irradiation of the area; and orthodontic treatment. Abnormalities are classified as dilaceration, extra root formation, double root formation, concrescence, rizomegali and hypercementozis. In this article, three different root abnormalities are presented.

Circannual Testis Changes in Seasonally Breeding Mammals.

In the non-equatorial zones of the Earth, species concentrate their reproductive effort in the more favorable season. A consequence of seasonal breeding is seasonal testis regression, which implies the depletion of the germinative epithelium, permeation of the blood-testis barrier, and reduced androgenic function. This process has been studied in a number of vertebrates, but the mechanisms controlling it are not yet well understood. Apoptosis was assumed for years to be an important effector of seasonal germ cell depletion in all vertebrates, including mammals, but an alternative mechanism has

Structure, attachment, replacement and growth of teeth in bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix (Linnaeus, 1776), a teleost with deeply socketed teeth.

Tooth replacement poses many questions about development, pattern formation, tooth attachment mechanisms, functional morphology and the evol … replacement cycle. Remodeling of the attachment bone occurs continuously to accommodate growth. New tooth germs originate from a discontinuous dental lamina and migrate from the lingual (dentary) or labial (premaxillary) epithelium through pores in the bone of attachment into the resorption spaces beneath the existing teeth. Pomatomus shares unique aspects o …

Wnt signaling during tooth replacement in zebrafish (Danio rerio): pitfalls and perspectives.

The canonical (β-catenin dependent) Wnt signaling pathway has emerged as a likely candidate for regulating tooth replacement in continuously renewing dentitions. So far, the involvement of canonical Wnt signaling has been experimentally demonstrated predominantly in amniotes. These studies tend to show stimulation of tooth formation by activation of the Wnt pathway, and inhibition of tooth formation when blocking the pathway. Here, we report a strong and dynamic expression of the soluble Wnt inhibitor dickkopf1 (dkk1) in developing zebrafish (Danio rerio) tooth germs, suggesting an active repr…

[Mechanism of the eruption of secondary dentition].

The second dentition is a process determined in space and time which presumes the presence of the permanent dental germ, its optimal position and the soundness of the periapical area. In absence of these conditions the clinically and histologically proved pathological phenomena (ex. the pathological triad of second dentition) can occur.

Pulp canal obliteration in an unerupted permanent incisor following trauma to its primary predecessor: a case report.

Trauma to a primary tooth may result in damage to the underlying developing permanent tooth bud because of the close proximity between the root of the primary tooth and its permanent successor. We report an unusual case where injury to the primary dentition resulted in pulp canal obliteration (PCO) of a permanent maxillary central incisor prior to its eruption. The other permanent maxillary central incisor was diagnosed as malformed because of trauma to the primary dentition at an earlier age. The occurrences of PCO or crown malformation dose not routinely disrupt the eruption of those teeth.

Development of deciduous and permanent dentition in Tarsius and its phylogenetic significance.

The earliest stages of development and differentiation of deciduous and permanent teeth were studied in prenatal and perinatal tarsiers. Both deciduous and successional teeth develop at loci for I1, I2, C, P2-4. Relationships among the dental lamina, enamel organs, and successional lamina were used to determine tooth homologies. During the second half of prenatal life, dP2 and dI2 undergo abnormal development. Their dentin becomes fragmented, and these teeth are shed or resorbed without eruption during the perinatal period. Our study provides evidence of an intermediate phase in evolutionary t
