Associations among tooth loss, systemic inflammation and antibody titers to periodontal pathogens in Japanese patients with cardiovascular disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: It is well known that there is a strong relationship between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Tooth loss reflects an end-stage condition of oral diseases, such as periodontitis. Infection with specific periodontal pathogens is known as a possible factor that influences development of CVD. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between the number of residual teeth and systemic inflammatory conditions in patients with CVD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We divided 364 patients with CVD into four groups, according to the number of residual teeth: (i)…

Impact of tooth loss on walking speed decline over time in older adults: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Tooth loss has been linked to poor health such as chronic diseases and mobility limitations. Prospective evidence on the association between tooth loss and walking speed decline is however lacking. AIMS: To examine the impact of tooth loss on walking speed over time and explore whether inflammation may account for this association. METHODS: This study included 2695 persons aged 60 years and older, who were free from severe mobility limitation at baseline. Information on dental status was assessed through self-report during the nurse interview at baseline. Walking speed baseline a…

Loss of phosphatase activity in myotubularin-related protein 2 is associated with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 4B1.

Mutations in the gene encoding myotubularin-related protein 2 (MTMR2) are responsible for autosomal recessive Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 4B1 (CMT4B1), a severe hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy characterized by focally folded myelin sheaths and demyelination. MTMR2 belongs to the myotubularin family, which is characterized by the presence of a phosphatase domain. Myotubularin (MTM), the archetype member of this family, is mutated in X-linked myotubular myopathy. Although MTMR2 and MTM are closely related, they are likely to have different functions. Recent studies revealed that MTM

Tooth loss, dental prosthesis use, and cause-specific mortality in older Japanese adults: a 7-year cohort study.

Poor oral health, particularly tooth loss, is associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality. However, the impact of dental prosthesis use on these associations remains unclear. This study evaluated the relationship between the number of remaining teeth, dental prosthesis use, and mortality from specific causes using seven-year follow-up data from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES). All-cause mortality and ten cause-specific mortality outcomes were assessed. The number of remaining teeth and use of dental prostheses were the main exposures. Cox proportional hazard models …

Tooth loss impairs cognitive function in SAMP8 mice by aggravating pyroptosis of microglia via the cGAS/STING pathway.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a common neurodegenerative disease among the elderly population. It has been posited that the onset and progression of AD are influenced by a combination of various factors. Occlusal support loss due to tooth loss has been reported to be a risk factor triggering cognitive dysfunction. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between tooth loss and cognitive dysfunction and illustrate the role of pyroptosis in advancing Alzheimer's disease. METHODS: Male 5-month-old senescence-accelerated mouse strain P8 (SAMP8) mice were divided into two group…

Tooth loss is associated with brain white matter change and silent infarction among adults without dementia and stroke.

Periodontal disease is a predictor of stroke and cognitive impairment. The association between the number of lost teeth (an indicator of per … P = 0.12) and 3.9 (95% CI, 1.27-5.02; P < 0.001), respectively. These findings suggest that severe tooth loss may be a predictor of silent cerebral infarcts and cerebral white matter changes in community-dwelling, stroke- and dementia-free adults.
