The aim of this study was to investigate pre-injury factors, causes of dental injuries and healing complications after traumatic injuries to permanent teeth. The analysed sample comprised 889 permanent teeth of 384 patients, who were treated in the Dentistry Department in Faculty Hospital in Pilsen. Enamel-dentin fractures [233 teeth (26.2%)] and lateral luxations [207 teeth (23.3%)] were the most frequent injuries. The age of the patients at the time of injury varied between 7 and 65 years. OBJECTIVES: To explore the clinical effect, the healing modes, and the potential influence factors of intentional replantation for periodontally hopeless teeth in combination with regeneration techniques.

This article reviews the treatment of a pediatric patient following head and neck trauma from a dog bite. The patient had an avulsed mandibular incisor, a fractured maxillary lateral incisor, and various facial lacerations. The avulsed tooth was replanted and secured for two weeks by using a physiologic splint. Both traumatized teeth received endodontic therapy and were returned to normal function. Trauma patients require a thorough evaluation and a multidisciplinary approach for the formation of a proper treatment plan.

Replacement resorption (ankylosis) may be a significant complication after replantation of avulsed permanent incisor teeth. This report explains the aetiology, diagnosis, management and current treatment options in ankylosis and then describes an alternative surgical technique, intentional luxation and repositioning. This technique, in the presence of an acceptable root length, may be a realistic treatment option in adolescence until osseointegrated implants can be considered at the age of 18-20 years.

In cases of an avulsed or luxated tooth, splinting of the injured tooth is recommended. Splint is defined as a fixation of the injured tooth to adjacent teeth in the dental arch. The preferred splint type is semi-rigid, which should be placed for 10 to 14 days and enable proper oral hygiene and will not cause any kind of impingement to the gingiva. It is effective in reducing the replacement resorption process, which affects the periodontal tissue surrounding roots exposed to dental trauma.

Avulsion of natural teeth caused by trauma may present an unusual problem for the general practitioner. Endodontic therapy and replantation of the tooth into the socket have a relatively low long-term prognosis because of internal or external root resorption. Dental implants can provide proper support and function for missing teeth with excellent esthetic results without preparation of natural dentition. In this case report, an implant system is used to restore an anterior space created by the loss of endodontically treated central and lateral incisors.

Time is a critical factor in successful replantation. The avulsed tooth is simply washed and replaced immediately. Where contamination with soil occurs anti-tetanus prophylaxis is given and some form of splinting is necessary for 3-4 weeks. Endodontic therapy is performed prior to replacement if there is a delay of more than two hours and where apex formation is complete it should be commenced within 10 days. Calcium hydroxide is useful as a root canal dressing and in controlling resorption. The value of immediate replacement and treatment should be publicised.
