Residential proximity to traffic and female pubertal development.

BACKGROUND: Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) has been linked with several adverse health outcomes, including preterm birth and low birth weight, which are both related to onset of puberty. No studies to date have investigated the association between TRAP and altered pubertal timing. OBJECTIVE: Determine the association between residential proximity to traffic, as a marker of long-term TRAP exposure, and age at pubertal onset in a longitudinal study of girls. METHODS: We analyzed data for 437 girls at the CYGNET study site of the Breast Cancer and Environment Research Program. TRAP exposu

Impact of environmental pollution on acne: a systematic review.

In an increasingly urbanized world, environmental pollution is recognized for its adverse effects on both systemic and skin health. While its role in conditions such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis is well documented, its impact on acne vulgaris remains less clear. This review aims to evaluate existing literature examining the association between environmental pollutants - such as particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), nitrogen oxides (NO2, NOx) and traffic-related emissions - and the development, severity or exacerbation of acne. A systematic search of peer-reviewed English-language studies pub

Association between the First Occurrence of Allergic Rhinitis in Preschool Children and Air Pollution in Taiwan.

The occurrence of allergic rhinitis (AR) may be significantly influenced by air pollution. This study examined the association between the first occurrence of AR in preschool children and the pre-incident levels of air pollutants in Taiwan. We identified 9960 eligible subjects from a systematic sampling cohort database containing 400,000 insureds of the National Health Insurance from 2007 to 2011 and matched them with the environmental monitoring data from 2006 to 2011 according to the locations of their clinics. Pre-incident levels were determined using the average concentrations of air pollu

Characterising socio-economic inequalities in exposure to air pollution: a comparison of socio-economic markers and scales of measurement.

This study examines traffic-related air pollution in London in relation to area- and individual-level socio-economic position (SEP). Mean air pollution concentrations were generally higher in postcodes of low SEP as classified by small-area markers of deprivation (Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) domains) and by the postcode-level ACORN geodemographic marker. There were exceptions, however, including reversed directions of associations in central London and for SEP markers relating to education. ACORN predicted air pollution independently of IMD and explained additional variation at the pos

Characteristics and determinants of personal exposure to typical air pollutants: A pilot study in Beijing and Baoding, China.

Personal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen oxides (NOx, NO2 and NO), ozone (O3) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) was repeatedly measured among fourteen office workers in Beijing and Baoding, China in summer, autumn and winter of 2019. Time-activity patterns were simultaneously recorded. Determinants of personal air pollution exposure were investigated for each pollutant via a linear mixed effect model. The personal concentrations of PM2.5, NO2, NO and O3 were higher in autumn and winter than those in summer. A decreasing trend was found in the personal PM2.5 level for a typical ind

Urinary 1-hydroxypyrene and PAH exposure in 4-year-old Spanish children.

AIMS: Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), among the main compounds present in polluted urban air, is of concern for children's health. Childhood exposure to PAH was assessed by urinary monitoring of 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP), a pyrene metabolite, investigating its association with exposure to air pollution and other factors related to PAH in air. METHODS: A group of 174 4-year-old children were recruited and a questionnaire on their indoor and outdoor residential environment was completed by parents. At the same time, environmental measurements of traffic-related air pollution (

Sustainable development of urban transport systems and human exposure to air pollution.

DAPPLE (Dispersion of Air Pollution and Penetration into the Local Environment, http://www.dapple.org.uk) is a major research project that will provide the understanding necessary to assess the sustainability of urban road transport in terms of exposure to traffic-related air pollution as an alternative to current indicators based on emissions, roadside, or far-from-road air pollution levels. The methodology is described, which combines on-street and laboratory measurement with modelling of the movement of air, vehicles, and vehicle exhaust emissions. The relationship between this kind of asse

Prenatal exposure to air pollution, maternal diabetes and preterm birth.

Prenatal exposure to ambient air pollution has been associated with preterm birth in several studies. Associations between air pollution and gestational or pre-existing diabetes have been hypothesized but are not well established. We examined the association between air pollution exposure in pregnancy and gestational diabetes and whether the association between air pollution and preterm birth is modified by diabetes (gestational or pre-existing) in a highly polluted area of California. Birth certificates and hospital discharge data from all singleton births from 2000 to 2006 to women living in

Characterizing Determinants of Near-Road Ambient Air Quality for an Urban Intersection and a Freeway Site.

INTRODUCTION: Near-road ambient air pollution concentrations that are affected by vehicle emissions are typically characterized by substantial spatial variability with respect to distance from the roadway and temporal variability based on the time of day, day of week, and season. The goal of this work is to identify variables that explain either temporal or spatial variability based on case studies for a freeway site and an urban intersection site. The key hypothesis is that dispersion modeling of near-road pollutant concentrations could be improved by adding estimates or indices for site-spec

Traffic exposure associated with allergic asthma and allergic rhinitis in adults. A cross-sectional study in southern Sweden.

BACKGROUND: There is conflicting evidence that traffic-related air pollution is a risk factor for allergic conditions. Few studies have investigated this in adults. In adults, a high proportion of asthma, rhinitis and eczema is triggered by non-allergic factors. We investigated traffic as a risk factor for allergic versus non-allergic asthma and rhinitis, and eczema, in adults. A questionnaire from 2000 (n = 9319, 18-77 years) provided individual data about disease outcome and self-reported traffic exposure. Additional exposure assessments were obtained using Geographical Informations Systems

Exposures to Air Pollution and Noise from Multi-Modal Commuting in a Chinese City.

BACKGROUND: Modern urban travel includes mixtures of transit options, which potentially impact individual pollution exposures and health. This study aims to investigate variations in traffic-related air pollution and noise levels experienced in traffic in Chengdu, China. METHODS: Real-time PM2.5, black carbon (BC), and noise levels were measured for four transportation modes (car, bus, subway, and shared bike) on scripted routes in three types of neighborhoods (urban core, developing neighborhood, and suburb). Each mode of transportation in each neighborhood was sampled five times in summer a

Estimating the frequency of hormesis and other non-monotonic responses in plants experiencing road traffic pollution in urban areas and experimental pollutant exposure.

Various plant traits are widely utilised to assess environment health. However, non-monotonic responses in plants (hormesis and non-hormetic ones) can induce an incorrect assessment of contamination level because they have maximums and/or minimums. Hence, an increase in the pollution level will not always be accompanied by plant index deteriorations. The frequencies of non-monotonic responses, especially non-hormetic responses, have been insufficiently studied for plant traits. This study analysed the frequencies of non-monotonic changes in plants experiencing urban chemical pollution (B. pend

Effects of short-term changes in ambient carbon monoxide on sickle cell disease hospital encounters.

Symptoms of sickle cell disease (SCD) may be worsened by environmental factors. Although outdoor air pollution has been proposed as a potential trigger, the specific role of carbon monoxide (CO) among traffic-related pollutants, remains understudied in those with SCD. Based on South Carolina hospital encounter records (2002-2019) for SCD patients, we estimated daily 8-h maximum outdoor CO concentrations at patients' residential zip codes using a newly-developed spatio-temporal model. We also estimated daily particulate matter<2.5 μm (PM2.5), ozone (O3), and elemental carbon (EC) concentrations

Traffic Density Exposure, Oxidative Stress Biomarkers and Plasma Metabolomics in a Population-Based Sample: The Hortega Study.

Exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) generates oxidative stress, with downstream effects at the metabolic level. Human studies of traffic density and metabolomic markers, however, are rare. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the cross-sectional association between traffic density in the street of residence with oxidative stress and metabolomic profiles measured in a population-based sample from Spain. We also explored in silico the potential biological implications of the findings. Secondarily, we assessed the contribution of oxidative stress to the association betwee

EV-miRNA associated with environmental air pollution exposures in the MADRES cohort.

Air pollution is a hazardous contaminant, exposure to which has substantial consequences for health during critical periods, such as pregnancy. MicroRNA (miRNA) is an epigenetic mechanism that modulates transcriptome responses to the environment and has been found to change in reaction to air pollution exposure. The data are limited regarding extracellular-vesicle (EV) miRNA variation associated with air pollution exposure during pregnancy and in susceptible populations who may be disproportionately exposed. This study aimed to identify EV-miRNA expression associated with ambient, residential
