Issues in Working with Transgender Individuals Who Sexually Harm.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: I review the recent literature related to the assessment, treatment, and management of transgender individuals who sexually harm. RECENT FINDINGS: There are no empirical research studies directly focused on the care of this group of individuals that have only recently been identified as an important sub-population among people who sexually harm. Related empirical research and other important professional literature do exist to inform clinicians regarding treatment guidelines for transgender mental healthcare. Research is needed to determine how best to assess sexual violenc

What does gender affirmation mean to you? An exploratory study.

PURPOSE: Gender affirmation lessens mental health disparities among transgender and gender nonbinary (TGNB) persons. However, the concept of what it means to be affirmed in one's gender has not been fully explored, nor has the impact of gender affirmation on other health indicators been determined. The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning of gender affirmation among a sample of TGNB persons. METHODS: This qualitative, narrative inquiry study consisted of individual, in-depth, semi-structured interviews with a convenience sample of 20 TGNB persons. Descriptive content analysis was

Fecundity in transgender men.

Premenopausal transgender men who retain internal female reproductive organs, who use exogenous testosterone, and who are sexually active with cisgender men are often capable of conception. This article discusses the potential for fecundity in transgender men, as well as appropriate reproductive care depending on whether the patient prefers to avoid conception or to become pregnant.

Perioperative Considerations for Person-Centered Gender-Affirming Surgery.

With more than 1 million people identifying as transgender in the United States alone, the likelihood of encountering a transgender patient and their family of choice in the perioperative setting is very high. A lack of data exists to equitably inform transgender-specific issues, as well as the associated morbidity during the transgender reassignment perioperative period. Anaesthesiologists should actively acquire the knowledge and skills needed to inclusively and respectfully manage these patients and be aware of their unique physiological and psychosocial needs. The pre-operative approach in

Routine Screening for Transgender and Gender Diverse Adults Taking Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy: a Narrative Review.

Despite the growing number of adult transgender and gender diverse (TGD) patients seeking health services, there are many unknowns regarding how routine screening recommendations should be applied to TGD persons receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT). Patients taking GAHT may have disease risks that differ from what is expected based on their sex assigned at birth or affirmed gender identity. We discuss two patient cases, one transgender man and one transgender woman who present for routine medical care, to review several conditions that may be impacted by the hormones utilized in m

Cervical Cancer Screening with Human Papillomavirus Self-Sampling Among Transgender Men in El Salvador.

Purpose: Sexual and gender minority persons in low-income countries have very limited access to routine health services. This study evaluated the feasibility of using a self-sampled human papillomavirus (HPV) test to increase access to screening for cervical cancer among transgender men in El Salvador. Methods: We partnered with a local advocacy organization for recruitment. A total of 24 transgender men (men assigned female at birth) ages 19-55 were enrolled and provided consent. Questionnaires assessed sociodemographics, health and sexual histories, and knowledge about HPV and cervical cance

"He Helped Me in Discovering Myself." Rethinking and Exploring Sexual and Gender Identity in Trans-Inclusive Relationships.

This qualitative study explores the effects of being in a relationship with a transgender or non-binary (TGNB) person on an individual's sexual and/or gender identity. To this aim, the responses of 107 partners of TGNB individuals to the following open-ended question were collected: "What effect, if any, has having a relationship with a transgender person had on your gender and/or sexual identity?." Through thematic analysis, 4 overarching themes emerged from the participants' responses: 1) No reason to change; 2) Exploration and changes; 3) New perspective; and 4) Negative effects and confusi

Interdisciplinary clinicians' attitudes, challenges, and success strategies in providing care to transgender people: a qualitative descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Access to clinicians competent in transgender health remains a significant barrier and contributor toward health inequity for transgender people. Studies on access and barriers to care have predominantly evaluated transgender patients' perceptions, but scant research has included the perspectives of clinicians. AIMS: We conducted a qualitative study to explore how clinicians (meaning physicians and advanced practice providers, in this paper) in the United States: (1) attain and utilize information, (2) perceive barriers and facilitators, and (3) understood gaps in their profession

Evaluation of Patient-Oriented, Internet-Based Information on Gender-Affirming Hormone Treatments.

PURPOSE: Transgender people have difficulty accessing gender-affirming hormone therapy (HT), a medically necessary treatment, in part due to a lack of provider knowledge. Patients often seek information on gender-affirming medical care using the Internet. Patients who are better informed about their own care may receive better care. This study evaluated the quantity and quality of online information about HT using several existing and novel measures. METHODS: Structured Google searches were conducted. Sites were evaluated using previously described Journal of the American Medical Association

BASHH best practice statement on the management of testosterone-associated vulvovaginitis.

BackgroundTestosterone-associated vulvovaginitis is an under-recognised cause of genital symptoms in transmasculine patients receiving testosterone as gender-affirming hormone therapy, with 5-years prevalence 64-78%. BASHH's Gender and Sexual Minorities Special Interest Group convened sexual health, gender, gynaecological and primary care experts and patient representatives to formulate a first-in-world best practice statement.MethodWe searched Medline, Embase, CINAHL, UpToDate, Trip Medical Database and Cochrane, to April 2025, regarding testosterone's impact on transmasculine people's vagina

Intersex Pretenders.

False claims of having an intersex condition have been observed in print, video, Internet media, and in live presentations. Claims of being intersexed in publicly accessible media were examined and evidence that they were false was considered sufficiently conclusive in 37 cases. Falsity was most often detected due to medical implausibility and/or inconsistency, but sometimes also using information from third-party or published sources. The majority, 26/37, of cases were natal males; 11/37 were natal females. Almost all (34/37) were transgendered, living, or aspiring to live, in their non-natal

Should Uterus Transplantation for Transwomen and Transmen Be Subsidized?

Success in uterus transplantation (UTx) among ciswomen suggests that transwomen and some transmen will also likely have interest in this intervention. It does not seem likely, however, that all parties interested in UTx will have the same standing when it comes to federal subsidies or insurance coverage benefits. This analysis describes the comparative moral strength of claims for financial support for UTx that different parties might make.

A Content Analysis of Transgender Health and Wellness Themes Shared Through Social Media.

Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) adolescents experience limited access to gender-affirming care (GAC) and information and use social media platforms for informational and social support. We conducted conventional content analysis of posts on the platform, Tumblr and applied univariate statistics to characterize health and wellness themes represented by this content. Content was predominantly transmasculine-relevant. Posts addressing the trans health care paradigm often co-occurred with content referencing affirmation logs, the physical and emotional impact of affirmation, surgery, and unsp
