Patterns of injury and management of children with pelvic fractures at a non-trauma center.

BACKGROUND: Pelvic injuries in young children are rare, and it has been difficult to establish clinical guidelines to assist providers in managing blunt pelvic trauma, especially in non-Level 1 trauma centers. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to describe the relationship among clinical findings, mechanism of injury, and the radiographic resources utilized in children with pelvic fractures presenting to a non-Level 1 trauma center. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients with a pelvic fracture treated in two urban pediatric Level 3 emergency departments was performed. RESULTS: Between 2001 and 201…

The prevalence of hepatitis C in a regional level I trauma center population.

Several studies have examined the prevalence of hepatitis B (HBV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in a trauma population. To our knowledge, no one has reported on the prevalence of hepatitis C (HCV). We prospectively studied the prevalence of HCV, as well as HBV, HIV, and syphilis in our adult regional level I trauma center population. Two hundred eighty-six consecutive trauma patients were tested for previous exposure to HCV using an anti-HCV mAb ELISA. Patients were also tested for exposure to HBV, HIV, and syphilis, and for illicit drug use. All rho values were calculated using Yates

A Retrospective Analysis of Needle Thoracostomies at a Tertiary Level 2 Trauma Center.

BACKGROUND: A tension pneumothorax is a condition that results in elevated pressure within the pleural space. The effective management of tension pneumothorax relies on needle decompression, commonly performed at the second intercostal space (ICS) midclavicular line (MCL). However, some literature suggests that catheters placed in the second intercostal space midclavicular line are prone to higher failure rates compared to the fifth intercostal space midaxillary line (MAL) (42.5% versus 16.7%, respectively). In this study, we aim to identify and scrutinize the prevalence of prehospital needle
