OBJECTIVE: To compare the enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) assay with the tuberculin skin test (TST) in children for the diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in the Gambia.
METHODS: We divided child contacts of sputum smear-positive tuberculosis cases into 3 age categories (<5, 5-9, and 10-14 years) and assessed agreement between the 2 tests plus their relationship to prior Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination. We categorized a child's level of M tuberculosis exposure according to where he/she slept relative to a case: the same room, same house, or a different house. The r

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of ESAT6-CFP10 (EC) skin test in healthy population and determine the factors influencing the booster effect.
METHODS: We conducted a randomized, double-blind, parallel controlled trial in healthy population. The experiment was divided into two stages. In the first stage, all participants underwent T-SPOT, TB-PPD, and EC tests. In the second stage, to evaluate whether BCG vaccination affected the efficacy of skin tests, the participants with three negative results in the first stage were randomly assigned to the BCG and place

SETTING: City of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil.
OBJECTIVE: To compare estimates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection prevalence obtained using traditional tuberculin skin test (TST) criteria and dual skin test (DST) data.
METHODS: A total of 1070 schoolchildren received DST with tuberculin and four environmental mycobacteria sensitins. Responses were classified as sensitin-dominant, tuberculin-dominant or non-dominant. Positive predictive values (PPV) were defined using 'narrow' and 'wide' standards based on DST responses. These predictive values were derived for each category of tuberculin in

OBJECTIVES: In Brazil, annual tuberculin skin tests (TSTs) are recommended for people living with HIV (PLWH) with CD4 >350, with tuberculosis preventive therapy provided on test conversion. We aimed to determine the yield of repeat TSTs for PLWH.
DESIGN: Secondary analysis of the stepped-wedge, cluster-randomized THRio trial for isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) to prevent tuberculosis (TB).
METHODS: We analyzed data from newly registered PLWH with negative baseline TST results. We calculated the number of TST conversions after 1 and/or 2 years among patients eligible for follow-up TSTs, th

We report a rare case of bilateral tuberculous uveitis associated with tuberculin skin testing (TST) in an otherwise healthy junior high school student. A 12-year-old boy presented with severely decreased vision in both eyes and a history of an intradermal PPD (purified protein derivative) skin test 12 days earlier. The best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/1000 in both eyes (OU). Ocular examination showed multifocal grayish-yellow choroidal tubercles. Laboratory examinations, including T-SPOT.TB, revealed no abnormal findings. He was diagnosed with tuberculous uveitis. Combined corticost

OBJECTIVES: There is conflicting evidence as to whether Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination offers protection against Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection ascertained by a positive tuberculin skin test (TST). We investigated the association between BCG vaccination status and TST results in a set of surveys at increasing TST cut-off values to take cross-reactions to BCG vaccination into account.
METHODS: Secondary analysis of data from three consecutive tuberculin surveys done among schoolchildren in Tanzania between 1990 and 2002. BCG vaccination status was ascertained by the presence

OBJECTIVE: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic disorder involving the gastrointestinal tract. Immunosuppressive drugs are usually prescribed to treat IBD patients, and this treatment can lead to tuberculosis reactivation. This paper aimed to analyze tuberculin skin test (TST) results in IBD patients at a reference center in Brazil.
METHODS: We evaluated TST results in IBD patients using a cross-sectional study. We also analyzed the medical records of patients treated at a reference IBD outpatient unit where TST is routinely performed.
RESULTS: We reviewed 119 medical records of 57

BACKGROUND: Internationally adopted children (IAC) are a growing group of US immigrants who often come from countries with high tuberculosis (TB) burdens. There is limited evidence to support current TB screening guidelines in these high-risk children. Therefore, we have prospectively examined the clinical utility of tuberculin skin testing (TST) and subsequent chest radiograph screening for TB disease in recently immigrated, asymptomatic IAC.
METHODS: Within 6 months of immigration to the United States, we collected demographic information and assessed the nutritional status of 566 IAC who p

BACKGROUND: Tuberculin skin tests (TSTs) are long-established screening methods for tuberculosis (TB). We aimed to compare agreement between the intradermal Mantoux and multipuncture percutaneous Tine methods and to quantify risk factors for a positive test result.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: 1512 South African children younger than 5 years of age who were investigated for tuberculosis (TB) during a Bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG) trial were included in this analysis. Children underwent both Mantoux and Tine tests. A positive test was defined as Mantoux >or=15 mm or Tine >or= Grade 3 for th

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculin skin testing (TST) for tuberculosis (TB) is recommended for all patients with HIV infection because of the known relationship between these two conditions. In this report we analyze the incidence and variables associated with non-prescription of TST in a cohort of HIV-infected people.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Longitudinal study conducted between 2000 and 2002 at 10 HIV hospital-based clinics. All HIV-infected patients who had not been regularly followed-up previously in dedicated clinics were identified. Data about TST and other variables related to TB were obtained from

In July 2007 Irish national policy changed such that children aged 3 months to 6 years no longer routinely require tuberculin (Mantoux) skin testing prior to BCG vaccination. Previous to that a tuberculin test was required in all children in this age group pre vaccination. While the previous policy was in place this study was conducted to assess the value of this test. The observation that children are frightened by the test (an injection into the skin) prompted the study. The author conducted a retrospective study of the results of 1,854 tuberculin tests performed as a prerequisite to BCG vac…

AIM: To determine the effect of Bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) vaccination on tuberculin skin test responses in 7-11-year-old children, and also to clarify whether the number of vaccinations and the time interval between vaccination and tuberculin skin test have an effect on the test responses.
METHOD: 1200 primary school children were evaluated for the presence and number of BCG scars. They were then given 5 TU PPD-S intra-dermally. Seventy-two hours after the application of tests, PPD indurations were measured.
RESULTS: Mean indurations were 3.7 +/- 3.9, 6.5 +/- 5.4 and 9.2 +/- 7.1 mm in c

UNLABELLED: Bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) vaccination used in the prevention of tuberculosis may cause problems in interpreting the tuberculin skin test (TST), which is commonly used in the diagnosis of infection. A limited number of studies have been undertaken to investigate how length of time after BCG vaccination affects TST results. TST induration values of unvaccinated children were compared with those of children vaccinated once in order to determine the changes in TST responses after BCG vaccination. Mantoux TSTs were administered to 1145 children aged 1-6 y and induration was measure

The epidemiology of tuberculin reactivity among physicians practicing in regions of moderate tuberculosis prevalence is unknown. We prospectively assessed the epidemiology of tuberculin skin test (TST) reactivity among physicians in training in St. Louis between 1992 and 1998. Of 1574 physicians who were tested, 267 (17%) had positive TST results. Older age, birth outside of the United States, prior bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination, and practice in the fields of medicine, anesthesiology, or psychiatry were associated with a positive TST result. Among physicians born in the United Stat
