BACKGROUND: Diagnostic laparoscopy currently is emerging as an important tool in the diagnostic armamentarium for abdominal tuberculosis (TB). However, the laparoscopic view may be deceiving even to the most experienced eyes, and it is not uncommon for TB to be diagnosed erroneously before the final histologic confirmation is received.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 20 diagnostic laparoscopies was conducted. The cases erroneously diagnosed at laparoscopy were collected and analyzed.
RESULTS: Five cases (20%) were identified. For two patients, the laparoscopic findings were thought to be

Intestinal tuberculosis (ITB) is a complex form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis characterized by nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms and substantial overlap with conditions such as Crohn's disease and gastrointestinal malignancies. These similarities frequently lead to diagnostic uncertainty, delayed diagnosis, and inappropriate management. This systematic review summarizes current evidence on the clinical presentation, diagnostic approaches, and therapeutic strategies for ITB, with particular emphasis on emerging diagnostic technologies and their role in reducing surgical interventions. OBJECTIVE: There is evidence that the gut microbiota play a regulatory role in the occurrence and progression of tuberculosis. The purpose of the current study was to explore the alterations in gut microbiome under different tuberculosis disease stages in the Uyghur population, clarify the composition of microbial taxonomy, search for microbial biomarkers and provide innovative ideas for individual immune prevention and for control strategies.
DESIGN: A case-control study of Uyghur individuals was performed using 56 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), 36 cases of latent tuberculosis infect

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of second-line anti-tuberculosis (TB) drugs on the composition and functions of intestinal microbiota in patients with rifampicin-resistant TB (RR-TB).
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, stool samples and relevant clinical information were collected from patients with RR-TB admitted to the Drug-resistant Specialty Department at Hunan Chest Hospital (Hunan Institute For Tuberculosis Control). The composition and functions of intestinal microbiota were analyzed using metagenomic sequencing and bioinformatics methods.
RESULTS: Altered structural composit

A woman in her 20s with a recent diagnosis of Crohn's disease (CD) affecting the ileocaecal valve was started on adalimumab, after routine tuberculosis (TB) tests were negative. Her abdominal symptoms got worse and she started presenting respiratory distress and fever. Tomography revealed a left pleural effusion, pneumonia and peritonitis with pelvic abscess. The diagnosis of disseminated TB with digestive involvement was suggested and sputum cultures were positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis Treatment for TB was started and immunosuppressants discontinued, leading to respiratory improvemen

While Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a common bacterial pathogen that infects the respiratory system, especially in endemic regions, it may uncommonly manifest in other organ systems, such as the nervous, gastrointestinal, or musculoskeletal systems. Sacroiliac joint infections are rare, and only 1%-5% of all infections are tuberculous in nature. Given nonspecific inflammatory signs in both laboratory and radiologic examinations, early identification of the causative agent can be difficult. In this report, we present the case of a 29-year-old Eritrean woman who presented with an uncommon extrap

Each year, there are more than eight million new cases of tuberculosis and 1.3 million deaths. There is a renewed interest in extrapulmonary forms of tuberculosis as its relative frequency increases. Among extrapulmonary organs, pleura and lymph nodes are the most common. Their diagnosis is often difficult and is based on clinical, radiological, bacteriological and histological findings. Extrapulmonary lesions are paucibacillary and samplings, in most cases, difficult to obtain, so diagnosis is often simply presumptive. Nucleic acid amplification tests, which are fast and specific, have greatl

The aetiology of pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO) varies dramatically according to epidemiology. We studied the cause and spectrum of PUO in Indian adults. A total of 152 patients (112 prospectively and 40 retrospectively) met Petersdorf and Beeson's criteria. The diagnostic evaluation was guided by potentially diagnostic clues, based on a 'step-wise' approach. The five main categories, i.e. infectious, neoplastic, non-infectious inflammatory, miscellaneous and undiagnosed comprised 43.4%, 21.5%, 19.7%, 2.0% and 12.5%, respectively. The top three causes were tuberculosis (n = 43, 28.3%), lympho

BACKGROUND: Abdominal pain in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients is often a marker of an underlying opportunistic pathologic condition. There are no data on HIV-related abdominal pain in Africa.
METHODS: Forty-four consecutive Cape Town patients with advanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection (CD4 < 200) and abdominal pain were studied prospectively to determine aetiology and survival.
RESULTS: A probable cause of pain was identified in 37 (84%): disseminated Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in 11, cryptosporidiosis in 6, cytomegalovirus infection in 6, and aty

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) remains an entity of high prevalence and mortality worldwide. The rising drug resistance is a public health problem. Besides, non-tuberculosis mycobacterial (NTM) infections are described with increasing frequency in areas of high prevalence of TB.
OBJECTIVES: To determine epidemiological, clinical and microbiological characteristics of mycobacterial infections documented by culture.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observational, descriptive study in hospitalized patients.
RESULTS: M. tuberculosis complex was identified in 90,9% of 187 patients; 9,1% had NTM, 64% w

Eight cases of pellagra, diagnosed on the grounds of neuropathological findings and retrospective study of clinical data, were found among 106 necropsy cases of tuberculosis. Although these eight patients had shown various mental, neurological and gastrointestinal symptoms, as well as skin lesions, the diagnosis of pellagra had not been made clinically. In all the patients, pellagra symptoms appeared during isoniazid therapy. Death occurred 4 to 16 weeks later. Isoniazid inhibits the conversion of tryptophan to niacin and may induce pellagra, particularly in poorly nourished patients. Pellagra

RATIONALE: Intestinal Behçet's disease (BD) is characterized by intestinal ulcerations and gastrointestinal symptoms. Ulcerative intestinal tuberculosis (TB) is usually with dyspepsia, abdominal pain, vomiting, and weight loss. The 2 diseases exhibit similar clinical manifestations, but the most critical aspects of their clinical courses and required treatments are not at all similar.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a case in which a patient with intestinal Behçet's disease developed a de novo ulcerative intestinal TB infection after the start of anti-tumor necrosis factor-α treatment. This was
