Ocular tuberculosis is a great mimicker of various uveitis entities. We present a case of a 29-year-old male who came in with blurring of vision and floaters in the left eye. On examination, the left eye had anterior chamber cells and vitritis associated with retinitis. He had no other symptoms. The initial presentation was consistent with ocular toxoplasmosis, and he was started on oral sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim and showed a good response to the treatment. However, work-up revealed negative toxoplasma antibody titers but a positive M. tuberculosis interferon-gamma release assay test and M

A 47-year-old Turkish female patient was diagnosed with tuberculosis of the sacro-iliac joints and terminal ileum. She developed a severe adverse drug reaction while taking first-line tuberculosis therapy consisting of isoniazid, pyrazinamide and rifampicin as Rifater and ethambutol. Within 5 min of ingestion she developed pruritic rash, angioedema and breathing difficulties, resulting in an A&E admission. The tuberculosis therapy was discontinued. Intradermal and oral challenge tests for rifampicin were conducted but abandoned early on due to reactions which included audible wheeze, vomiting,

Tuberculosis is a disease of global outreach that may affect the entire human body but is most commonly located in the lungs. Otorhinolaryngological manifestations of tuberculosis are rare, mostly occurring secondary to pulmonary disease but nevertheless represent significant diagnostic challenges. Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis is rare, representing around 1% of all upper air-way localizations and the most common presentation is in the form of adenoids. Tuberculous glossitis (oral tuberculosis) is even scarcer and may present in various clinical forms, usually mimicking a malignant neoplasm, or,

As a paradigm for chronic infectious diseases, tuberculosis exhibits a variety of clinical presentations, ranging from primary pulmonary tuberculosis to reactivation tuberculosis and cavitary disease. To date, the animal models used in evaluating chemotherapy of tuberculosis have been high-dose intravenous models that mimic the disseminated forms of the disease. In the present study, we have used a low-dose aerosol exposure model which we feel better reflects newly diagnosed tuberculosis in patients converting to tuberculin positivity. As appropriate examples of chemotherapy, four rifamycins (

Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteraemia is a severe manifestation of tuberculosis in people living with human immunodeficiency virus acquired immune deficiency syndrome, associated with high mortality. We found patients with fatal outcomes had significantly lower lymphocyte, platelet, and CD4+ T-lymphocyte counts, and higher urea levels (p < 0.05). CD4+ T-lymphocyte count <32 cells/mm3 was independently associated with mortality (p = 0.005). The oral rifampicin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol regime was more frequent among survivors. Social vulnerability factors were common but not ind

We present a case of a 77-year-old female diagnosed with multidrug-resistant (MDR) pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), on all oral longer regimen [according to Indian Programmatic Management of Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (PMDT) guidelines] for a month. She presented with nausea, vomiting, worsening of breathlessness for a week, pancytopenia, and gradually increasing lactate levels. Various causes of lactic acidosis including metabolic, septic, and hypoxic were ruled out. Despite our dedicated efforts, she tragically passed away due to severe lactic acidosis, a complication associated with linezolid

PURPOSE: To report a case of ocular co-infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Toxoplasma gondii in an immunocompetent woman.
METHOD: Retrospective observational case report.
RESULT: A 61-year-old woman presented with decreased vision and floaters in the right eye of 1-month duration. Ocular examination revealed panuveitis with a large yellowish-white retinochoroiditis lesion adjacent to a chorioretinal scar. Investigations showed positive Mantoux test, QuantiFERON TB test, and HRCT chest suggestive of active pulmonary tuberculosis. Serology revealed raised IgG anti T. gondii antibody.

The ocular involvement of tuberculosis is not uncommon but diverse. Rarely, patients initially present with ocular signs that simulate intraocular malignancy. We report 3 cases of isolated presumed choroidal tuberculoma masquerading as intraocular tumor. Two patients had no systemic evidence of tuberculosis with strongly positive purified protein derivative skin test and one patient had evidence of inactive old pulmonary tuberculosis demonstrated by chest computed tomography. Antituberculous regimen including isoniazid 5 mg/kg/day, rifampicin 600 mg/day, ethambutol 15 mg/kg/day, and pyrazinami

A series of 31 cases (33 ears) of tuberculous otitis was reviewed. Classical findings of the disease, such as painless ottorhea and multiple perforations of the tympanic membrane, are not consistent with the clinical findings reported here. Severe conductive hearing loss, abundant pale granulations, and an eroded malleus handle occur consistently and appear to be important clinical features of the disease. In all cases suspected of tuberculosis, granulation tissue from the middle ear or mastoid was submitted for bacteriologic and histologic examination. As a result, tuberculous otitis was diag

HISTORY: We admitted a 65-year-old patient with suspected reactivation of a pulmonary tuberculosis for further diagnosis.
FINDINGS AND DIAGNOSIS: 14 months after completing a standard treatment course against pulmonary tuberculosis, the patient presented with cough and night sweat. A CT-scan revealed signs of a bipulmonary progress. Microbiological results proved multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (resistances against isoniazid and rifampicin). Reviewing the patient's old records uncovered a previous isoniazid-resistance at the start of the first treatment course, which had not been appropriat

BACKGROUND: The clinical features of bacteria endocarditis became atypical when consolidated with other conditions such as tuberculosis (TB). Especially, the symptoms of bacteria endocarditis (BE) which were hidden behind the TB fever often lead to misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old male with thoracic vertebra bone TB history presented with low-grade fever, shortness of breath and cardiac souffle. After conventional antibiotic therapy and strengthen anti-tuberculosis treatment condition did not be improved. Further inspection, there were bacteria endocarditis

OBJECTIVE: Tuberculosis isolated to the head and neck region is common in patients with HIV infection. However, the management of isolated head and neck tuberculosis has not been reported in the literature. This study was done to describe the characteristics of tuberculosis isolated to the head and neck region in patients infected with HIV and to detect differences in presentation and diagnostic management based on the status of HIV infection at presentation.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed including 38 patients infected with HIV who were seen with tuberculosis isolated to the he

Mice that consumed a single dose of 10(7) lipid-encapsulated Mycobacterium bovis BCG bacilli showed significant pulmonary and systemic protection against aerosol challenge with M. tuberculosis H37Rv. As an extension of previous challenge studies with virulent strains of M. bovis, this report describes a reduction in M. tuberculosis infection in mice vaccinated orally with lipid-encapsulated BCG comparable to that observed in mice vaccinated subcutaneously with BCG. These results are consistent with the induction of tuberculin-specific cell-mediated immune responses.

A 64-year-old female patient was admitted to Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital on February 21, 2023 because of right-sided chest pain for more than 4 years and left-sided chest pain for more than 9 months. She had a past medical history of previous tuberculosis and rheumatoid arthritis. A chest CT in October 2018 revealed multiple pulmonary nodules. A CT-guided biopsy showed no tumors, and adenosine deaminase levels in the pleural effusion were elevated, suggesting a high likelihood of tuberculosis. As a result, anti-tuberculosis treatment was initiated in March 2019. In December 2019, she underwent

SETTING: Ethambutol (EMB) is used as a fourth drug in paediatric anti-tuberculosis treatment. In current recommendations the dosage of EMB is calculated per kg body weight.
OBJECTIVE: To present two studies investigating an appropriate EMB dosage in children, and observational data on its toxicity and efficacy.
DESIGN: EMB serum levels in children of different age groups were determined after single oral administration of EMB alone as well as after EMB combined with rifampicin, and optimal dosages were established. The efficacy and toxicity of these EMB dosages were examined retrospectively.

Drug efflux pumps play important roles in intrinsic and acquired drug resistance. Verapamil, an efflux inhibitor that enhances the activity of bedaquiline, clofazimine, and other drugs against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, has been proposed as a potential adjunctive agent for treatment of tuberculosis (TB). However, the extent to which verapamil enhances in vivo efficacy by inhibiting bacterial efflux pumps versus inhibiting mammalian drug transporters to improve oral bioavailability has not been delineated. We found that verapamil potentiated the in vitro activity of bedaquiline and clofazimine

The authors report a case of coinfection of pulmonary paragonimiasis and pulmonary tuberculosis which is an uncommon coinfection. The patient presented with a one-week history of nonmassive hemoptysis about 1 month after completion of treatment for smear-negative pulmonary tuberculosis (sputum polymerase chain reaction positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis). She lived in Nakhon Nayok province and reported taking raw crabs from time to time. The complete blood count revealed eosinophilia and her chest radiograph showed patchy infiltration at right lower lung field. Computed tomography scan of

Advances in the understanding of protective immune responses to tuberculosis are providing opportunities for the rational development of improved vaccines for bovine tuberculosis. Protection requires activation of macrophages through stimulation of a Th 1 type immune response. Ideally, a vaccine for cattle should induce protection without causing animals to react in a tuberculin test when exposed to Mycobacterium bovis. A number of new tuberculosis vaccines including attenuated M. bovis strains, killed mycobacteria, protein and DNA vaccines have been developed and many of these are being asses

A 29-year-old Caucasian woman presented to hospital with a 2-day history of diarrhoea, anorexia and rigors. Investigations showed abnormal liver function tests, hyponatremia, hypoalbuminaemia and lymphopenia. The initial chest radiograph was normal. A bone marrow trephine biopsy showed non-caseating granulomata and she subsequently developed miliary shadowing on the chest radiograph. A transjugular liver biopsy confirmed the presence of acid-alcohol fast bacilli. Despite starting triple therapy for miliary tuberculosis she remained febrile and developed massive hepatosplenomegaly, jaundice and
