BACKGROUND Pulmonary cryptococcosis can be associated with various imaging findings and can occur in immunocompetent hosts. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish pulmonary cryptococcosis from pulmonary tuberculosis based on imaging findings. CASE REPORT A 34-year-old female nurse who worked in an endoscopy examination room visited our hospital because of an abnormal lung shadow. At her workplace, a gastrointestinal endoscopy had been performed on a patient with infectious tuberculosis. The nurse was asymptomatic, and acid-fast staining and culture of her sputum were negative. Chest computed

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the global burden of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) after pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), specifically in cases with pulmonary cavitation.
METHODS: PTB rates were obtained from the World Health Organization and a scoping review of the literature was conducted to identify studies on residual pulmonary cavitation after PTB and estimate the global incidence of CPA after PTB. Having established that from 21% (United States of America) to 35% (Taiwan, China) of PTB patients developed pulmonary cavities and that about 22% of these patients developed CPA, the authors appl

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of a 2 min slide agglutination test to detect the presence of antibodies directed against Mycobacterium tuberculosis antigens.
DESIGN: The test utilizes solible antigens extracted from a cultivable new species of non-pathogenic saprophytic mycobacterium, Mycobacterium w, which shares antigenic determinants with M. tuberculosis. The soluble antigens are covalently linked to carboxylated polystyrene latex beads.
RESULTS: The sensitivity of the assay was increased from 78% (reported earlier), to 90.2% for pulmonary tuberculosis and 85.7% for extra-pulmonary tuberculosis. T

In the period 1980-1984, 85 patients with tuberculosis were seen at Leyden University Hospital. In this retrospective study clinical data of 76 patients with pulmonary, extrapulmonary, miliary and disseminated tuberculosis are presented. 43 patients suffered from pulmonary tuberculosis. Three patients suffered from miliary tuberculosis and three patients from disseminated tuberculosis. Eight patients suffered from pleuritis tuberculosa, of whom three also suffered from pulmonary tuberculosis. The heterogeneity and often rather non-specific, sometimes surprising clinical aspects of tuberculosis

BACKGROUND: Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTMs) are ubiquitous, free-living, environmental saprophytic microorganisms. NTMs belong to the genus Mycobacterium which includes Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). NTMs have lately been a major cause of pulmonary disease (PD) in immuno-compromised individuals including HIV-1 patients. NTMs and MTB appear similar based on microscopy, radiology, and clinical symptoms; consequently, this may lead to misdiagnosis. This study sought to establish the prevalence of NTM pulmonary disease in HIV-1 patients presumed to have pulmonary tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent globally, despite being a potentially curable disease. This disease typically affects the lungs but may involve many extrapulmonary sites, especially in patients with risk factors such as HIV infection. The clinical features of extrapulmonary TB may mimic many different disease entities, particularly at less common thoracic sites such as the heart, chest wall, and breast. Imaging has an important role in the early diagnosis of TB, helping to detect disease, guide appropriate laboratory investigation, demonstrat

Asthma and pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) are disease entities with different pathogenesis. However, endobronchial tuberculosis (EBTB), a peculiar form of PTB, can mimic the symptoms of asthma. Although uncommon, the coexistence of asthma and PTB can appear. We report three cases of PTB. The first two cases with EBTB were misdiagnosed as asthma and the third case with asthma developed PTB four months after high-dose inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) therapy. The first two cases presented with chronic cough up mucopurulent/purulent sputum and localized wheezing which revealed diagnostic clues. The thi

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of tuberculosis involves long-term intake of several antimicrobial drugs, including that with a wide spectrum of action, which may affect the microflora of the urinary tract.
AIM: To determine the effect of long-term combination of antibiotic drugs on the microbiome of male urethra.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 75 men were included in an open, prospective, non-comparative study, including 63 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis who received anti-tuberculosis therapy for at least 3 and no more than 5 months without urinary tract infections (main group) and 12 pati

Horner's syndrome results from a blockage of the sympathetic innervation to the eye at any point along its trajectory. It presents various etiologies, and it is a very unusual form of presentation of pulmonary tuberculosis. We describe the case of a patient with a Horner syndrome secondary to involvement of the pulmonary apex due to tuberculosis.

OBJECTIVES: Surgical interventional has been key in the treatment of tuberculosis (TB) for a long time. Its importance diminished after the emergence of chemotherapy. However, the spread of rapid multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) TB has led us to return to surgery to treat TB. Today, every second patient in Russia with destructive TB has either MDR or XDR TB, which is the reason for the low efficacy of conservative treatment. In 2015, treatment with drugs resulted in clinical recovery in only 29.8% of new cases of destructive TB acid-fast bacilli (AFB)+.

Today surgical procedures for pulmonary tuberculosis are highly selective but owing to the increasing incidence of multidrug resistant tuberculosis has been becoming more and more relevant. Besides the treatment of tuberculosis foci in multidrug resistance tuberculosis to eliminate the source of relapse, complications as sequelae of tuberculosis are among the most frequent indications for surgery. In patients with cavernous lesions, destroyed lobe or lung, bronchiectasis, pleural empyema or hemoptysis thoracic surgical procedures may be warranted. However, in solitary pulmonary nodules operati

Tuberculosis remains a major global medical challenge and concern. In the world's population of over 7.4 billion people, 8.6 million are estimated to be infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis; another 2.2 billion have latent tuberculosis. There is an annual incidence of 16,000 new cases in the USA and 7-8 million new cases worldwide, of which 440,000 are multidrug-resistant or extensively multidrug-resistant, mainly in developing countries or emerging economies. According to the World Health Organization, the incidence of tuberculosis is 133 cases per 100,000 of the population; 3.3% new case

Tuberculosis has made a comeback in recent years. This upsurge has been attributed to factors such as increased immigration and the human immunodeficiency virus epidemic. Primary pulmonary tuberculosis manifests radiologically with parenchymal involvement, lymph node involvement, pleural effusion, and/or miliary disease. In post-primary tuberculosis, the earliest radiological sign is small nodules and branching centrilobular lesions that increase in size and coalesce to form ill-defined patchy consolidations; cavitations are very characteristic of active disease. The aim of this article is to

Tuberculosis most commonly presents as a pulmonary disease, in which infection, persistence, and induction of transmissible pathology all occur in the lungs. If viewed as a pulmonary disease, enlarged lymph nodes represent reactive adenitis, and extrapulmonary forms of tuberculosis (including lymphatic tuberculosis) are not transmissible, hence representing an evolutionary dead-end for the pathogen. In an alternative theory, Mycobacterium tuberculosis passes asymptomatically through the lungs and rapidly establishes a chronic lymphatic infection. After a period of weeks to decades secondary lu
