Diagnosis and management of spinal tuberculosis combined with brucellosis: A case report and literature review.

Tuberculosis combined with brucellosis is a very rare condition. Overlapping clinical presentation and laboratory parameters of tuberculosis and brucellosis may lead to misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis of the condition. The current study presents the case of a 45-year-old male with symptoms of lower back pain, non-tender swelling in the right flank, intermittent hyperpyrexia, sweating, body aches and numbness and weakness of right lower limb. A lumbar computed tomograph (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging indicated vertebral destruction and the formation of sequestra and thecal sac compr

Outcomes of radical debridement versus no debridement for the treatment of thoracic and lumbar spinal tuberculosis.

PURPOSE: Whether radical debridement is necessary for the treatment of thoracic and lumbar tuberculosis is still questionable. The objective of this prospective randomized study was to compare the outcomes of radical debridement versus no debridement for the treatment of thoracic and lumbar tuberculosis. METHODS: Seventy-four thoracic and lumbar tuberculosis patients with a neurological function of grade D and E underwent surgery and received the same chemotherapy regiment from January 2009 to October 2014. All patients were divided into group A and B by taking the drawing of lots. In group A

Pseudoclavibacter otitis media in a 3-year-old boy with pulmonary and spinal tuberculosis.

Pseudoclavibacter has rarely been documented as an etiologic agent of infection in humans. We presented the first case report of Pseudoclavibacter otitis media in a boy with pulmonary and spinal tuberculosis.A 3-year-old boy was referred to our hospital due to prolonged fever and progressive paraplegia for 3 months. He had yellowish discharge from both ear canals. The pleural fluid culture was positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The discharge from both ears culture yielded yellow colonies of gram-positive bacilli with branching. This organism was positive for modified acid-fast bacilli st

Multiple tuberculoma involving the brain and spinal cord in a patient with miliary pulmonary tuberculosis.

Although tuberculosis of the central nervous system is well known, the incidence of intramedullary tuberculomas is low and a combination of intramedullary with intracranial tuberculomas is extremely rare. We report a case of disseminated tuberculoma involving brain and spine with miliary pulmonary tuberculosis in a 66-year-old woman initially presenting with fever, general weakness, back pain and motor weakness of both lower extremities. Despite medical therapy, she developed progressive motor weakness of both lower extremities with muscle strength 1/5 in both lower extremities. Urgent surgica

[Dysfunctions of respiration and blood circulation in patients with concomitant tuberculosis of the spinal column and lungs].

Functional disorders in the respiratory apparatus and blood circulation were studied in 76 patients with tuberculosis of the spinal column concomitant with pulmonary tuberculosis. Spirography, pneumotachography, elctrocardiography, integral rheography and the method variability of cardiac rate were made use of in the diagnostics of the mentioned disorders. Combined tuberculosis of the spinal column and lungs was found to be accompanied, in case of an active pulmonary process, by instable hemodynamic indices, a reduced contractive myocardium function, an insufficient hemodynamic provision and a

Clinical and hematological factors associated with neurological involvement in spinal tuberculosis: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The association between peripheral blood immune-inflammatory markers and neurological involvement in patients with spinal tuberculosis, and to develop a predictive model for early risk assessment. Spinal tuberculosis with neurological impairment is a major cause of disability, yet simple, cost-effective early warning indicators remain lacking. Peripheral blood immune-inflammatory markers are valuable in infectious disease prognostication, but their predictive role in spinal tuberculosis neurological involvement remains unclear. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 294 p

Posterior Decompression and Stabilization in Thoracic and Lumbar Spinal Tuberculosis: A Prospective Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal tuberculosis (TB) remains a common cause of spinal infection worldwide and may result in severe neurological deficits and progressive deformity if not treated appropriately. While anti-tubercular therapy (ATT) is the cornerstone of management, surgical intervention is indicated in patients with neurological deterioration or mechanical instability. Posterior decompression and stabilization have emerged as a safe and effective surgical option. AIM: The aim of the study is to evaluate the functional and radiological outcomes in patients with thoracic and lumbar TB treated by

3D-bioimplants mimicking the structure and function of spine units for the treatment of spinal tuberculosis.

Approximately 1-2% of the reported tuberculosis (TB) cases have skeletal system problems, particularly spinal TB. The complications of spinal TB involve the destruction of vertebral body (VB) and intervertebral disc (IVD) which consequently leads to kyphosis. This work aimed at utilizing different technologies to develop, for the first time, a functional spine unit (FSU) replacement to mimic the structure and function of the VB and IVD along with a good ability to treat spinal TB. 3D-printed scaffolds with different porous patterns (hexagonal or grid) were fabricated from biocompatible acrylon

The changing epidemiology of spinal tuberculosis: the influence of international immigration in Catalonia, 1993-2014.

The overall incidence of spinal tuberculosis (TB) appears to be stable or declining in most European countries, but with an increasing proportion of cases in the foreign-born populations. We performed a retrospective observational study (1993-2014), including all cases of spinal TB diagnosed at a Barcelona hospital to assess the epidemiological changes. Fifty-four episodes (48·1% males, median age 52 years) of spinal TB were diagnosed. The percentage of foreign-born residents with spinal TB increased from 14% to 45·2% in the last 10 years (P = 0·017). Positive Mycobacterium tuberculosis testin
