Prevalence of porcine cysticercosis in the Lake Kyoga Basin, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Taenia solium is a zoonotic helminth with the potential to cause life threatening epilepsy in people through the aberrant larval infection of the brain called Neurocysticercosis (NCC). The pig is the intermediate host for T. solium where the larval form, cysticercus cellulosae, normally develops after the pig eats eggs of the parasite. Humans are the definitive host where the adult tapeworm develops and are infected through the consumption of poorly cooked, infected meat. T. solium has been acknowledged by the World Health Organization (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)

Marriage and the risk of incident HIV infection in Rakai, Uganda.

OBJECTIVE: Studies suggest that the prevalence of HIV is higher among long-term marital/consensual relationships than in the unmarried. We assessed the risk of incident HIV infection by marital status in rural Rakai, Uganda. DESIGN: Longitudinal data from the Rakai Community Cohort Study between 1999 and 2011. METHODS: We estimated HIV incidence per 100 person years (py) in sexually active individuals aged 15-49 years with a total of 44,179.6 py who were never married (women 2929 py and men 4261 py), currently married or in long-term consensual relationships (currently married women 29,823 p

Knowledge on plants used traditionally in the treatment of tuberculosis in Uganda.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality globally. The disease is especially important because of increasing drug resistant strains and co infection with human immune virus (HIV) and acquired immune disease syndrome (AIDS). Because of this there is need to identify new leads that can be developed into new drugs. The objectives of this study were to (1) document plant species commonly used by traditional medicine practitioners (TMPs) to treat TB, methods of preparation and administration of drugs (2) document disease recognition b

Translating health research evidence into policy and practice in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Uganda experiences a high disease burden of malaria, infectious and non-communicable diseases. Recent data shows that malaria is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among all age groups, while HIV prevalence is on the increase and there is re-emergence of viral haemorrhagic fevers and cholera epidemics. In order to respond to the above situation, a team of researchers, policy makers, civil society and the media was formed in order to build a collaboration that would help in discussing appropriate strategies to mitigate the high disease burden in Uganda. METHODS: A prepara

The charms and challenges of antiretroviral therapy in Uganda: the DART experience.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) improves the quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS. However, adherence remains a challenge. A total of eight focus group discussions (FGD) were conducted with participants from a randomised controlled trial that monitored strategies for managing ART in African adults: Development of Antiretroviral Therapy. All FGD participants had received ART for at least one year. Perceived benefits of ART were key motivators for adherence. These benefits included improved physical health, restored self-esteem, acceptance in the community and hope for a longer and health

'A bridge to the hospice': the impact of a Community Volunteer Programme in Uganda.

In Africa, the need for palliative care provision is escalating with an increasing number of people living with HIV/AIDS, coupled with rising cancer and AIDS-related cancer diagnoses. In Uganda there is a shortage of doctors, particularly in rural areas. To address this Hospice Africa Uganda developed a Community Volunteer Programme to train volunteers to help by providing support to patients in their own homes. The aim of this qualitative study was to evaluate the impact of the Community Volunteer Programme. Sixty-four interviews, with patients (21), community volunteer workers (CVWs) (32), a

Spatial and genetic epidemiology of hookworm in a rural community in Uganda.

There are remarkably few contemporary, population-based studies of intestinal nematode infection for sub-Saharan Africa. This paper presents a comprehensive epidemiological analysis of hookworm infection intensity in a rural Ugandan community. Demographic, kinship, socioeconomic and environmental data were collected for 1,803 individuals aged six months to 85 years in 341 households in a cross-sectional community survey. Hookworm infection was assessed by faecal egg count. Spatial variation in the intensity of infection was assessed using a Bayesian negative binomial spatial regression model a

Factors associated with carcinoma of the oesophagus at Mulago Hospital, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: In Uganda, as in many other parts of the world cancer of the oesophagus (CAE) is on the rise. Squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma are the common subtypes. Risk factors for this cancer have been identified but not studied systematically in Uganda. Identification of these factors would enable establishment of preventive measures. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence, histological features and associated factors for CAE among patients referred to the endoscopic unit of Mulago hospital, Kampala, Uganda. METHODS: We performed a 1-year cross-sectional study in 2004 and 2005 of

Clinical manifestations of severe malaria in the highlands of southwestern Uganda.

Epidemics of malaria have occurred in highland areas of East Africa since the 1980s, but the clinical spectrum of severe malaria in these areas has not been described. Over a 17-month period from 2001 to 2002, we assessed 117 consecutive patients admitted to Kabale Hospital in highland Uganda who met the World Health Organization 2000 criteria for severe malaria. Sixty-six persons (56.4%) were age 5 years or older, and 51 (43.6%) were under 5 years of age. Fever, vomiting, and cough were the most frequent symptoms. Hepatomegaly and splenomegaly were infrequent. Prostration was the most frequen

Etiology of pruritic papular eruption with HIV infection in Uganda.

CONTEXT: A frequent cause of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related morbidity in sub-Saharan Africa is a commonly occurring, intensely pruritic skin rash. The resulting scars are disfiguring and stigmatizing. Despite the substantial prevalence of pruritic papular eruption (PPE) among HIV-infected Africans, the cause has been elusive. OBJECTIVE: To determine the etiology of PPE occurring in HIV-infected individuals. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PATIENTS: Cross-sectional study of HIV-infected patients with active PPE from clinics in Uganda conducted from May 19 through June 6, 2003. Enrollment occ

Serologic and phylogenetic characterization of HIV-1 subtypes in Uganda.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the HIV genetic subtypes present in HIV-1-infected asymptomatic blood donors in Uganda and to evaluate serologic detection of infection by commercial immunoassays; to evaluate samples for HIV-1 group O infections. METHODS: Sixty-four HIV-seropositive plasma samples were collected from the Nakasero Blood Bank, Kampala, Uganda. The plasma were evaluated using commercial HIV enzyme immunoassays (EIA) and a research immunoblot. HIV-1 group M and O infections were identified on the basis of discordant seroreactivity in EIA and reactivity to group M and O antigens on the im

Burkitt's lymphoma: a recent clinical and histopathologic study in Uganda.

This study was carried out on 100 young patients with Burkitt's tumour from March 1994 to September 1995. They were clinically examined and biopsied at the Dental out patient Clinic, Mulago Hospital, Kampala, Uganda. The tumour was demonstrated as a single or multiple lesion involving the jawbones. It had a male/female ratio 2:1, the peak incidence had occurred at 4-6 years of age. The malaria, as an endemic disease in this country as well as malnutrition are factors which may induce viral factors involved in this formidable tumour.

Control of tsetse flies in Uganda by dipping cattle in deltamethrin.

The effect of treating cattle with deltamethrin to control tsetse flies and ticks was investigated on 2 ranches 8 km apart in central Uganda where there is a high risk of trypanosomosis. This area had a moderate challenge of Glossina pallidipes. The cattle had very low challenge of Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, Amblyomma variegatum, Boophilus decolaratus and Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi, due to regular treatment with dioxathion. On one ranch a dip was charged with deltamethrin to treat cattle regularly for 3 months. The other ranch was used as a control for the tsetse population, but the anim

Genetic processes within an epidemic of sleeping sickness in Uganda.

Reproductive processes within the current Ugandan epidemic of sleeping sickness are investigated. Genotype frequencies derived from isoenzyme patterns in 44 stocks of Trypanosoma brucei s.l. collected in 1988 from Tororo, south-east Uganda are analysed by single and multiple loci methods. In the single locus method, the hypothesis of random mating is tested by agreement with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The multiple loci method uses a contingency table approach to detect non-random associations between pairs of loci; this equates to the detection of disequilibrium. The results do not support th

Determinants of child nutrition and mortality in north-west Uganda.

An anthropometric survey of children aged 0-59 months in north-west Uganda in February-March 1987 indicated a high prevalence of stunting but little wasting. Use of unprotected water supplies in the dry season, prolonged breast-feeding, and age negatively affected nutrition; in contrast, parental education level improved nutrition. Mortality during the 12 months following the survey was higher among those who had low weight-for-age and weight-for-height, but children who had low height-for-age did not have higher mortality. Weight-for-age was the most sensitive predictor of mortality at specif
